I can't install .pkg files

When I try to install .PKG file, it will show fail to install.

It asked my password fist. After I insert my password it didn't even went on install, instead, it showed this message "The installation failed" . This happened to all my .pkg file installation.

You can't, you can only install apps downloaded from the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app directly on the iPad - you can't use Mac (OS X) or PC software on the iPad (iOS), they are different operating systems.

Install the UnArchiver and try again.

There is no Installer.app in the Utilities or Applications folder, there is one in the System/Library/CoreServices.
If yours is not there, then you need to:
1: Backup your data off the machine to a non-TimeMachine drive and disconnect all drives.
2: If you have TM, try to restore the Installer.app from the TM drive and reboot. See if things work.
If the above doesn't work, your going to have to re-install just OS X 10.6 (and bundled programs) from the disk by holding c and booting off the 10.6 disk and simply installing OS X. Then software updating to 10.6.8.
This will replace all bundled programs and OS X, not touch your files (backup regardless) and most third party programs.
Some third party programs will have to be reinstalled form original sources because they install Kext files into OS X and thus kicked out by the 10.6 reinstall form disk.
All should go well, however if you boot to a gray screen or other freeze, reboot holding the shift key down, then update all your third party software to be current to 10.6.8.
Another method is to re-install in to CoreServices the Installer.app from the 10.6 disk using the extraction program called Pacifist from CharleSoft, then running software update to get any updates for Installer.app.

I first received this message when trying to upgrade Pro Tools from 8.0 to 8.0.1 a prerelease for snow leopard. I tried numerous things such as repairing permissions, as well as some pro tools specific things and to no avail. Still got the same error message.
So then I tried completely uninstalling and deleting all things pro tools from my computer. After a clean uninstall and removing all traces of pro tools I proceeded to try and re-install pro tools from my pro tools 8 disk. About a minute into the process I get the EXACT same error message.
I know this issue has been going on since even before snow leopard. I really need to get pro tools installed and running again or at least be able to get the program installed. I've isolated pro tools out of the mix because its been several different installers and even an installer from a dvd. I know this is a Snow Leopard or plain OS based problem. I have repaired permissions, created a brand new user, wiped clean and started over. I don't know anything else to do. PLEASE HELP???!!!

One thing to help investigate the issue is to create a new user just for testing that is stock with no add-on's etc., then login there and try to install. If it works there you can bet there is something unique to your original account that is borking that install - otherwise the issue is most likely global to your system and you might be out of luck until/unless a reportedly qualified version becomes available, etc.

Can we install AIR file on an Android device with AIR runtime installed? I have tried publishing APK and it works. If yes, what is the difference between publishing it as an AIR app and publishing it as an APK?

If you have administrator privileges on your Archos Tab you can try to side-load the AIR installer onto your Archos from your Android phone. Copy the AIR APK from your phone to a location on your computer and then connect your Archos to your computer. Or if you have a directory on the internet you can upload and download, though I don't know the legal ramifications concerning all of this side-loading. You may only be licensed to use AIR on the device on which it was downloaded.
But if you can port your AIR application as a .air file, you might have an extension to your Adobe AIR publication software that allows you to publish an APK file, in which case all you have to do is connect the Archos to your computer and copy the apk to the Archos and install the application, if you have administrator privileges to install applications outside of the Archos market.
Does this make sense? By no means should you "root" your device though because that could void your warranty and also incur other personal damages to you that you do not need to have.

Please be aware that Symbian S60 2nd edition use .sis whereas Symbian S60 3rd edition uses .sisx files.
Also go to Application Manager > Options > Settings and set "Online Certificate check" = OFF and Software Installation = ALL.
Secondly try resetting date on phone to January 1 2007 first and if that doesn't work try December 31 2006 as Symbian certificate may have expired; reset date after installation.

I downloaded some ilife updates and the 10.4.5 intel update on another mac, with broadband; brought home on ipod. They won't install on my intel imac. Double clicking on the pkg file yields "can't find the application". Thanks for any tips.

You need an un-packing program called Stuff It (Its free for basic version)

I'm trying to open an edirol driver with a .pkg file type but the icon just expands and then nothing happens. Same thing happpens with other .pkg files. I've opened with Installer, tried creating a new admin user, copied to desktop but to no avail. Is there anything else I can try short of Archive & Install? Bit scared of trying that. Please help.

I just downloaded the file in Firefox. In the download window I clicked Open and the file was expanded on my desktop. I located the folder and double clicked. I then double-clicked on the .pkg and it opened the installer and was ready to run the script to see if the software could be installed on my computer.
I suggest that you try downloading the file again and see if a new download makes a difference. Incidentally, not that it should make a difference, what browser are you using? Have you had difficulty expanding and installing any other downloads.

Installer fails to install .pkg files

Just purchased Adobe Lightroom, and the .pkg file will not install. I get a console log message like so: "2007-08-09 16:20:58.530 Installer[416] Unable to load nib file: PagedInstaller, exiting"
I tried a safe boot, llogging in as root, but this did no good...
It installs just fine on my laptop, so it's not the disk...
Any ideas short of a OSX reinstall?

This is a shot in the dark but it can't hurt anything. Locate this file:
com.apple.installer.plist It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences
Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Reboot.
Try the Adobe LIghtroom installer.
Also, if you haven't already tried it, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. That can fix a myriad of weird problems.

I have a Webdav folder setup on a DreamHost server . I can upload all kinds of file just fine to it. However, when I try to upload a .pkg file to that folderr, I keep getting an error to the effect that "one or more items can't be copied"

Yes, that's because a .pkg is actually a special kind of Folder, that confuses especially FTP.
The solution is to Archive or ZIP the PKG first.

OK, this is driving me nuts. I downloaded Palm and Abobe software, and when the file unpacks there is a .pkg file in the window. When I click on it, it says there is no program to open it with. How the heck do I get a .pkg file open on my Macintosh?? Thanks.

I opened firefox and downloaded Adobe Reader.
Installed and up and running..
Got a box that said use this for all users and clicked yes.
did a restart opened Safari and downloaded my first PDF since I bought this computer in NOVEMBER and after being with APPLE CARE 3 sessions and them telling me it was BAD PDFS..

Can't install executable files downloaded in Firefox

I just got a new computer with Windows 7 (32 bit) and downloaded the most recent version of Firefox. I downloaded a couple of free applications to install (an FTP client and a printer driver). When I try to run the executable file, I get an error that says "Program to big to fit in memory". I have 4 gb of ram on this machine, so I am not sure that this error is representative of what is happening. Interestingly though, if I download the exact file in IE, the executable launches and installs without any problems. Any ideas as to what to do and why this is happening?

I want to update what I originally wrote. We have now been able to isolate the problem to .exe or .zip files downloaded through Firefox onto the network server (which is 64 bit). If I download the file to my desktop (32 bit), I can launch the files. Since I work in a small office, I typically download a file to the server so that it can be installed on all of the workstations. This now doesn't work. But, if I download the same file through IE to the network server, the program launches fine.

Can't install pkg

Hi all,
The problem is I can't install any software from a .pkg
At the moment I'm trying to install MAMP and each time I get the same message, "The installer encountered an error that caused the instalation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance".
Same is happening with all .pkg but I can install .app where you just have to drag to the apps folder just fine.
Any ideas?

I'm not sure about Pacifist, but for me (in Tiger) double-clicking on a .pkg installs it. I did this last night with a bunch of patches I had saved from Software Update. I believe you can also do this in a Terminal window:
<pre>install -pkg SomePackage.pkg -target "/"</pre>
