Do you get a message that "Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer"? If so, then your hardware is too old, which means it also can't run Mountain Lion.
To determine exactly what kind of Mac you have, go to the Apple at the top left. Click that, hold down the Option key and choose System Information.
The very first thing shown in the larger right hand pane is the system overview. Copy/paste only the first four lines into a reply here. Like this:
Model Name:          Mac Pro
Model Identifier:          MacPro5,1
Processor Name:          6-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed:          3.33 GHz

There is your problem. DVDs that ship with a Mac are machine specific. You will need to purchase a retail copy of the DVD $29.

First up, we don't know what kind of MacBook you have so we can't tell you what OS you can run. You can use this instruction to identify which MacBook model you have: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1635. Alternatively, from the Apple menu open "About this Mac". From the window that pops up, click "More Info". This will open the system profiler. Click "Hardware" and locate the model identifier, there.
Next, you need to determine if your system can even run Mavericks before you can go about installing it. These are the requirements:
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
Lastly, as you'll note from the above, you can't update to Mavericks (or Mountain Lion or Lion) from 10.5.8. Mavericks is only available in the App Store. You need to be running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) in order to download and install any OS from Lion (10.7) and up. .dmg.part is not a complete file.. It usually indicates that the entire file has not been downloaded yet. Are you sure you downloaded the entire file? (i recommend updating itunes through  > Software Update

It will update the Boot ROM version (on MB 5,1) to MB51.007D.003.
Yet I have (MB 5,1) Boot ROM version MB51.007D.B03. Weird again!
What a mess Apple. Considering how important firmware updates are you'd think they could make this a little clearer.

After the last up-dates Safari extensions broke. Now unable to reinstall all extensions.
Have been able to work around this in the past but nothing I did before works now.

You can't install an older OS over a newer one. So you'll get a message saying you can't install ML until you erase the drive.
I'm presuming you already have the full Mountain Lion installer on your drive.
Download DiskMaker X. Use it, the ML installer, and an 8 GB flash drive to create your own bootable ML installer. Boot to the flash drive when it's ready. From there, you'll get the same minimal work screen as when you boot into Recovery Mode. Use Disk Utility to erase the drive, then install Mountain Lion. Restore your personal data.
