I Can't Make a 16:9 widescreen DVD!

I guess this is also iDVD issue but my problem is that I cannot make a widescreen copy of the work I did with Final Cut ExpressHD (3.5) I've tried to upload my quicktime file into idvd but it comes out 4:3
every time. So--my question is can I do something with the parameters or sizing options in QuickTime Conversion Export to make it work better. I've tried 960 by 540. I've tried importing it into iMovie but no luck so far.

Out of the 3 solutions proposed by Tom in his web page, I like best QuickTime Pro, described by Tom in details. It's the easiest one and always works, but you have to buy the QT Pro upgrade (about 30$) if you don't have it yet.
To use the free myDVDEdit here are the detailed instructions:
- Use iDVD to create a disk image, but do not burn the DVD from iDVD; instead create a +disk image+ file
- From the finder open the disk image and copy its VIDEO_TS folder to your desktop
- Change the VIDEO_TS file permissions to let you modify its contents: in the finder Get Info panel select read/write for this folder and +all its internal folders+
- Open myDVDEdit and use its File>Open command to open the modifiable copy of the VIDEO_TS folder
- In the top left panel of the myDVDEdit window select +VTS 1+
- In the panel below the video frame select +VTS 1+ among the vertical left tabs, and then Parameters among the top center tabs
- Now you can see some parameters, that in your case should be: Coding mode: MPEG-2, Standard: NTSC, Resolution: 720x480
- Aspect is what you need: this should be set to +_16:9 auto letterbox_+ - if not, select this option
- Save - this is all you need to do in myDVDEdit
- Now you have to +make a new disk image with the modified VIDEO_TS folder+: if you have Toast you have simply to drag the new VIDEO_TS folder to the proper Toast window and burn; otherwise you can use DVDImager, a free application, to create the new disk image, and then use Disk Utility to burn the real DVD.
Even if the above steps are not a big problem, for sure using QT Pro is faster (no VIDEO_TS folder nor disk image handling, etc.): and I think it's a powerful tool whose value is much higher than its price.

  • How can I make 10 Copies of my DVD

I have a Mac G5 running system 10.4.7. I am using iLife 6.0.2 and i have Toast 6.0. I have been using iLife for a couple of years and have made many short DVDs using iDVD with no problems. I read an artical in the July, 2005 issue of Macworld on page 78 titled "Prevent DVD Disasters". It tells how to make several DVDs using the disk image method. It also says that you can put the raw images on the disk. I did not try to use disk utility as they suggested. I wanted to use Toast as they also explained. I have made three attempts and each has failed to work properly. Since the movies that I made in iMovie were so short the movies and the raw data fits on the DVD with no problem.
I created two movies and an intrduction. I work with teenagers in our church. About a dozen of us camped out in the woods behind our house, played paintball and went swimming. I took all of the pictures with a Canon camera. The introduction is 1 minute and 14 seconds, consisting of movie clips and still shots. The first movie that I made was combining 8 video clips that I made using iMovie, the movie is less than 3 minutes long. The second movie consists of one video clip that runs for 33 seconds and 24 still pictures, this movie runs for less than 5 minutes.
Here is what I am trying to do, one include the raw data and make 10 copies of the DVD with out having to make them with iDVD one at a time. I know that if I use iDVD and make them one at a time it takes much longer than making them from a disk copy. I know it would not be much trouble with this short DVD, but I would like to learn so I could make longer DVDs and save time.

HOW TO copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724
you need to create ONE dvd in iDVD, then you can follow advice in the link above.
Or simply use the "copy" function of Toast...
we are less interested in the content of your project (teenagers in your church), but ...
    * did you use a miniDV or a still-cam with some "moving image" ability? which Canon model?
    * do you create an iM project, or did you try to import the files direct to iDVD
    * do you want to create a dataDVD (not possible with iDVD) or a videoDVD?
you're talking of "raw pics"- do you mean, you want to create a videoDVD with some data content in a DVD-rom section...?
besides: you should update your version of Toast to 6.1.1. (think this is the actual one)...

  • How Can I Make a High Quality HD DVD Video (dvd vob)

I don't know about NTSC but there is a nice PAL solution for SD 16:9 for ordinary DVDs. The 16:9 image becomes 720x576 pixels. So the pixels are each quite wide, and the horizontal resolution is less than the vertical resolution, but at least no pixels are wasted as with letterbox.
A semi-solution is to make a HD-DVD. That format has been abandoned but Apple software pretends otherwise. Apple Compressor does compressions at around 20 Megabits/second data rate specifically for HD-DVD, and Apple DVD Studio Pro makes HD-DVDs. For short projects, less than around 30 minutes, the HD-DVD can be made on a normal DVD. (I did this for a 40 minute project by cutting the bitrate somewhat.) The quality is almost equal to Blu-Ray, but who can play it? People with well equipped Apples can.

  • Can I make a 5 Hour long DVD

Hi everyone, I have a client who has already had 5 hours of video put onto a DVD he wants me to do the same. Can iDVD handle this??? I know iDVD usually has a time limit of 2 hours, but when I gave it a QT movie that was over 2 hours long it just asked me to insert a dual sided DVD-R which I did and it worked out ok. Has anyone ever done 5 hours? And if so how??? Thanks, I hope someone can help before I create a 5 hour program and then discover it won't work!

I guess there are two questions: (1) could you and (2) should you.
    (1) You probably can with something like compressor and DVD SP - heck, you could probably compress it enough to fit on a single layer disc. it will probably be 'ugly'.
    (2) I can't imaging anyone wanting to sit down and view 5 hours of video in one showing! It would seem more sensible to break the video up in several watchable pieces - but I do understand that clients don't always want the sensible thing.
As to >Can iDVD handle this??? The answer is no. You need DVD SP (which comes with Compressor).
Another option is Toast 7 and a double-layer burner which will give you approximately 5 hours (according to page 68 of the Toast 7 manual).

  • Widescreen DVD's

    Guys
    Hope you can help
I've created a widescreen DVD project to help with a local charity and have had people report back that the sides/top/bottom are being chopped off. I've read somewhere this is due to the DVD not being intelligent enough to know which to use widescreen/ordinary and wondered how I go about fixing this?
    Thanks!
    Daz

Try putting the widescreen movie file inside an iDVD slideshow, the kind created by the "+" button at the bottom. That will let you scale the movie to the TV safe area like you can with stills.
    This is what you get:

  • How can i make still from 16:9 film tot bitmap without distortion?

how can I make stills from my 16:9 movie to bitmap without having distortion?
! work with Adobe Premiere Elements 10

    Bernard Bussemaker
If you really have a 720 x 576 Standard Widescreen Video 16:9 (PAR = 1.4587) and you want a jpg still capture from it using Premiere Elements 10, then I suggest the following:
    Premiere Elements 10
Project Preset = PAL DV Widescreen
Place the Timeline Indicator to the frame that you want as a jpg image.
    Go to
    Share
    Computer
    Image
and there set Presets = DV PAL SD (it is long story, but you do not have much choice at that level), so
you could experiment with JPEG - HD 1920 x 1080 but no sure how that is going to look going from 720 x 576 to 1920 x 1080, so
Under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of that preset, set
Frame Width 1024 or 1050 pixels
    Frame Width 576 pixels
    Aspect = Square (1.0)
("or" relates to....if you just want a 16:9 jpg still, then 1024 will do fine. If you want a 16:9 jpg still that will present in a Premiere Elements project to fill the Edit Mode monitor, then 1050.
1024 x 576 is the square pixel version of the non square pixel version 720 x 576 widescreen which is stretched for display after encoding.
Image can resize downward if necessary. More details on that later.)
If the details of what I have suggested are too much, then just try the suggestion step by step and then  let us know if it works for you. If any questions or you need clarification on anything written, please do not hesitate to ask.
If you are really dealing with a 720 x 576 4:3 standard video, we can go through that next.
But the answers are in the details.
    Thanks.

  • Can I make a DVD with multiple slide shows?

I am making a project for my son's school. Each classroom (7 or 8 rooms) has their own photo show that I am making. The school wants me to put all of the photoshows on one DVD and separate classrooms into different titles, so families can skip to their child's classroom. So, in theory, I would have one DVD and about 7 or 8 chapters on it. Each chapter would be a different photo show. Can this be done? Is there a tutorial that would be able to help me with this? I have made a photo show and have burned it onto a DVD, but I haven't done anything that requires separate headers/titles. Thoughts? Tia.

Here's a few useful tips when preparing the slideshow/s for an iDvd ...
First suggestion is not to exceed 6 buttons per menu (although some themes allow for up to 12 buttons per menu).
Secondly, don't exceed 99 images per slideshow if the objective is to present the slideshow on a typical set top dvd player or TV. Disregard this rule if you will use your mac / computer to present the dvd slideshow. Here's why:
iDVD '08: After 99 images in a slideshow, set-top DVD player will reset to chapter 1
In iDVD '08, your slideshows are no longer limited to 99 images. You can now have up to 9,801 images in a slideshow. When you are playing a slideshow on your DVD player, it will number the slides (which are chapters) from 1 to 99 and then start numbering over again at number 1 (on the one-hundredth slide). This is normal and not something you can control when you author your DVD. It is a specification that applies to all DVD players.
    Related documents
Article 302962: Slideshow audio playback drops out after 99 images
Thirdly, the following are articles to be aware of when making a slideshow/s with iDvd:
    Preparing images for iDVD slideshows
You can use photos, movies, presentation slides (created in a program such as Keynote), or other image files in a slideshow created in iDVD. iDVD works with any image file that is supported by QuickTime (including PICT, JPEG, TIFF, and PDF.) You can also use photos directly from your iPhoto library.
Images and movies in a slideshow are scaled to fit the standard DVD window size, but the aspect ratio is preserved. For example, a picture taken vertically (also known as “portrait format”) may have black bands on either side of it to fill out the screen. If you want an image to fit the DVD window exactly, use an image-editing application to resize the image before bringing it into iDVD. (It is not possible to resize movies.) Resize to these dimensions:

720 x 540 pixels for standard video in NTSC format

854 x 480 pixels for widescreen in NTSC format

768 x 576 pixels for standard video in PAL format

1024 x 576 pixels for widescreen in PAL format
You can also make sure images in iDVD are always scaled to a size that will fit within the area visible on most TV screens, or the “TV safe area.”
o fit slides into the TV safe area:
    Choose iDVD > Preferences.
    Click Slideshow.
Select the checkbox labeled “Always scale slides to TV Safe Area.”
Adding menus to an iDVD project
Depending on which theme you choose, the menus in your iDVD project can hold either 6 or 12 buttons. If you need more buttons on a menu than your theme allows, or if you need additional menus to organize the content of your DVD, you can create submenus.
Submenus give you flexibility in organizing your DVD. For example, perhaps you have several slideshows in your project. You can create a button on your main menu that links to a slideshow submenu that includes links to each of your slideshows. You can also create submenus for additional movies, extra features, and so on.
    To add a submenu:
Make sure the menu to which you want to add a submenu is showing in the iDVD window.
Click the Add button (shown below), and choose Add Submenu from the pop-up menu.
A placeholder button labeled My Submenu appears on the menu. It has the default button style for the theme, so you may need to change it to match other buttons on the menu.
Click the placeholder label for the new button once to highlight it, and type a new name for the button.
When you click the label to highlight it, a light blue background appears behind the text.
Using the pop-up menus in the in-place control that appears (shown below), change the typeface, font style, and font size of the button name if you want.
To open the new submenu, double-click the newly added button. Notice that iDVD automatically applies the Extras menu style from your project’s theme to the submenu. Also, a Back button that returns to the previous menu appears on the submenu. You can now edit this menu just as you edit any other menu, changing its theme if you want. You can even use the Add button to create buttons that navigate to sub-submenus.
For more information about creating submenus, see Related Topics below.
And lastly, keep in mind you can also use iPhoto (as well as third party apps) for making a slideshow/s for use within iDvd.
    Using iPhoto slideshows in iDVD
You can easily create slideshows in iDVD using images or albums from your iPhoto library.
You can also add slideshows created in iPhoto to your iDVD project. These slideshows are imported into iDVD as movies, which retain the effects and sounds you created in iPhoto. As a result, you can’t edit or change these slideshows in iDVD, and viewers can’t manually click through the slideshow using the DVD player remote control.
    To import an iPhoto slideshow:
Make sure the DVD menu from which you want to access the slideshow is open in the iDVD window.
For example, if you want the slideshow to be accessible from the main menu of the DVD, the main menu should be showing in the iDVD window.
Open iPhoto and select a slideshow.
Choose Share > “Send to iDVD.”
After several minutes, a button for the slideshow appears on the menu. The button has the same name as the slideshow.
The slideshow also appears in the Movies section of the Media pane, so you can use it in other iDVD projects as well.
You can change the name of the button by clicking the button twice to highlight the text and typing a new name.
If iDVD is not open when you send your iPhoto slideshow to iDVD, iDVD opens to a new project automatically when iPhoto finishes processing the slideshow. A DVD menu, with a default theme, is displayed in the iDVD window, and it has a button for the iPhoto slideshow. In this case, if you want to add the sideshow to an existing iDVD project instead, choose File > Open, click Don’t Save, and then choose an existing project. When the project is open, you can click the Media button, then Movies, and drag the slideshow to any menu.
If your version of iPhoto does not support exporting directly to iDVD, you must export the slideshow from iPhoto as a QuickTime movie, and then import the QuickTime movie into your iDVD project.

  • Can I make 16:9 Movie from DV footage shoot in 4:3

Hi I am new to FCP and have been asked to make a movie and put it onto DVD for a friend of film shoot at their wedding. The DV footage was shoot in 4:3, can I make a 16:9 project in FCP and import the 4:3 footage and edit it ok?
    Thanks,
    Nick

You can create a 16:9 project, but you'll have to expand the clip to fill it, or crop the top and bottom, then zoom it up - as it wasn't shot in widescreen, you will lose some image somewhere - and it wont show you anymore when its played back anyway.

Just go and buy an iTunes gift card at any store in your country.
Then follow all the steps you did, but when it asks you for the credit card number, there shoujld be a GIFT CARD option which will let you load your account witht eh funds form the gift card without providing a credit/debit card #.

  • I have recently purchased an iTunes gift card to make purchases in my favorite game but for some reason I can't make in app purchases. Someone said that I have to have a credit card but I don't want one of those. Can someone help?

I bought an iTunes gift card to purchase certain things in my favorite app. Well when I try to buy things inside the game it does not give me the option to approve the purchase and it never shows up. I have reset the app, I have deleted the app and downloaded again, I have turned my ipod off and on, I have made sure all updates are up to date and nothing has changed. I saw a similar question like mine and the answer was that you have to have a credit card linked to your iTunes account to make in app purchases and I was thinking they were right until I talked to a few friends who cancelled their credit cards and took them off of the account and can still make in app purchases so that can't be the issues. Can someone please help me this is driving me crazy I have talked to iTunes support but they weren't much support.
