I can't make it to the login screen

When I turn on my iMac after a routine shutdown it won't load the login window. It gets to the blue screen but when it's time for the login panel to boot it just freezes.
I've tried booting in safe mode, I loading the disk utility from the installation disk and I even started in single user mode and ran the fsck command but nothing has worked. The last two seemed to encounter errors but then it seemed to have fixed them. Is there anything else I can try before I have a professional look at the issue.

Hello misslissa:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
Try this:
Boot from your software install DVD and then run repair disk (fsck is not recommended by Apple after OS X 10.4).
A question…. did the problem just start out of the blue, or have there been hardware changes?

  • Toshiba Satellite A665 wont make it to the login screen

    Hi
My laptop can't make it to the login screen. Ive tried holding down 0 at the start, but the recovery menu thing wont come up. Ive tried all the commands in the start up menu and they all lead to black screens or going back to the boot menu. I would really like to get my laptop functioning, I dont care if I have to wipe all memory and everything off, as long as I have a laptop to use other than our family computer.

Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop. "A665" is only partial.
If booting from the recovery partition isn't working, you'll need to use external recovery media. If you didn't make recovery discs, you'll need to order them.

  • In iOS 7 you can still make calls from the locked screen. Just swipe the missed call numbers to the right. Is this a bug?

How is it a security breach? You're free to turn off lock screen notifications for the phone app so that no one can do that.... even if they can, they can only call the number that called you... nothing else. (well, except for 900 or whatever the emergency services number is where you are, but that's required by law).

  • Can't make it to the login window iMac G5 10.5.8

When I turned my iMac on this morning it went through all of the "normal" steps (gong, grey screen, apple logo, progress wheel, blue screen) and stopped at the blue screen. Thinking it was just a fluke, I shut the machine down and restarted, only to have it stop at the blue screen.
After disconnecting everything going into the iMac, I booted into safe mode but it stopped at the blue screen again.
I flashed the PRAM (big gong, single quieter gong) and afterwards it came to the same stopping point.
I reattached my external drive and was able to start using my 2-day old backup into both my regular account and my "test" account (without login items). Now I want to try and figure out my login problem. Any ideas?

Reverted to previous day's backup, started fine afterwards.

  • My keyboard doesn't work from the login screen, but when I login as a guest user it works fine (minus the brightness buttons, playback buttons, etc.).

I've already switched out the batteries and the keyboard works fine, so I fear it might be some sort of bug? All the methods of restarting or resetting certain settings can only be done from the login screen or from within an account, when the keyboard doesn't work, and the guest options are limited to non existent.

Try doing a SMC reset, you may need to do this 2-3 times as sometimes the reset doesn't always "take" the first time. To do a SMC reset, shut down the computer, unplug the power cord from the wall and computer, wait 15-20 seconds and restart normally and test. If after 2-3 resets it still does not work test another keyboard. If that keyboard works then this indicates your keyboard has failed and needs to be replaced.

  • How can I remove the Guest account from the login screen?

I'm very new to the Mac world so pardon this noob question.  But how can I control what user accounts are visible on the login screen on OS X?  I've already went into the System Preference, User Accounts and set the Guest account to disabled.  However this account is still on the logon screen when I reboot the Mac!  How can I remove this account and/or make sure that my user account is the only one visible?

I'm not sure why this worked, but I found this in another post and it worked for me.
Even when the Guest Account / Access is disabled, the login option / and lock screen, still have a guest login.
This is because in Preferences/ Security & Privacy/General the bottom item is turned on.
Turn on: Disable restarting to Safari when screen is locked

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you keep your data backed up?
If not, you should always do so*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad.  Having a bootable clone is a must.
That link also shows you some tools you can use to recover data.
If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.
Directory issues can be fixed with these tools*:

  • I have changed the email signature on my iPhone, when composing a new email the signature is there, however when I am replying to an email it is not, how can I make sure that the signature is at the end of every email I send?

I have changed the email signature on my iPhone, when composing a new email the signature is there, however when I am replying to an email it is not, how can I make sure that the signature is at the end of every email I send?

Yes I know what you mean about it cluttering the thread and for personal emails it is better without the signature. However this relates to sending business emails from an iPhone so I need the signature present on every email.
I can't find anything in Settings so I was hoping someone may have some knowledge/information/experience regarding this problem.

On your iPad, delete the existing account then sign back in with the new ID and password.

  • Can someone make iBooks have the Option to view 2 pages in landscape mode so it can use up all the pixel real estate?

Can someone make iBooks have the Option to view 2 pages in landscape mode so it can use up all the pixel real estate?
Apple usually does this for OSX and its great when compared to windows where it doesnt use up all the real estate for viewing applications like websites and pdf files but when it comes to iBooks, it feels like there is no apple touch to it and is limited.
If steve jobs were still alive, i bet there wouldnt be this problem >.>
Please consider this as a real problem for people out there who would like to see 2 pages in landscape mode with pdf files and not just epub files.
    Thanks!

Penguin, do you always insult people on here or was I just a special case?
If you read the statement carefully, which you obviously did not! I was speculating, and I did not say anything for certain about knowing or not knowing ...
I'm happy for the reply to the post and helpful link you posted to where I can leave some feedback for my post on an Apple monitored site but i rather you not reply if your gonna leave a snyde remark with every helpful comment.
Don't do it again. and Thanks for the help.

  • Put my macbook pro to sleep. When I opened it, the desktop window is small and I can't resize it. All applications now run in the smaller size window.  Can't make it fill the screen. Just switched from windows.  Thank you.

Check to see if the resolution has been changed in System Preferences.

certain apple products (iTunes) require a different password than my apple id password.  Why? … and can I make them all the same password?

I assume you never got a solution. My own painful story is here:

I've given up on Lion/iCloud. I'll try Mountain Lion.

How can I make Yahoo Mail the default in Safari. I contacted Yahoo and they said to contact Safari.

Yahoo Mail is not an application. If you wish to use Yahoo Mail just create a bookmark to its web page.

  • How can I make Spotlight show the file path

How can I make Spotlight show the file path in the Spotlight menu for selected file?

Via Finder certainly, but not in the menu.  You can view the file path in the Spotlight search results display by pressing the ⌘ key (while hovering over a file in the results), though.  The path will display at the bottom of the Quick Look output, or cycle through that location.

  • Can i make all inboxes the default that opens each time i open mail

Can I make "all inboxes" the default that opens each time I check mail?

Agreed! I think it's absurdly rediculous that it can't be set to open by default on the "All Inboxes" screen! This SHOULD be an option! It's a huge pain to be forced to exit a "single accounts inbox" then go back into the "all inboxes" screen. It's redundant. LOL. I was really hoping that they would add this option in ios 7...
