I can't: mount disks / go to Safe Mode

So, I wake up the other day, turn on my PowerBook G4 and my external disk G-Drive Q 250 GB only to find that it didn't mount. I turn my G-Drive off, disconnect it from FireWire 800, turn it back on, plug the cable in, and nothing happens. Then, I open Disk Utility and to my surprise it was there. I click Mount, but no luck.
A few minutes later I connect my iPod 30 GB (FAT32, enabled disk use) and it doesn't mount either. So, I open Disk Utility again and it's also there. I click Verify Disk - everything OK, both iPod and my G-Drive Q.
Feeling frustrated I tried going to Safe Mode to see if I can work something out. So, I restart my computer, hold the Shift key, and after the white screen with Apple logo appeared and the gear loading indicator started spinning my PowerBook just turned off. Feeling confused, I turn my PB on again, hold the Shift key and the same thing happens again.
Some people recommended that I reset my firmware (Command + Option + O + F, reset-nvram, reset-all), but it didn't help. I also tried this - Command + Option + P + R.
So, can anybody tell me what is going on? I can't believe this is happening when everything worked just fine two days ago. All I can remember is that I installed that Security Update, but that might not be the problem because it was all fine after it. Or maybe not, I really don't know.
Any advice is appreciated. Let's figure what's it all about.

i want to use time machine but it can't mount disk as it has been used with windows

You will need to repartition and reformat the drive for use with OS X:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Can't mount disk image error message for TC

After a couple of frustrating days trying to get a back-up to my TC to work (time wasted waiting for the process to fail each time - Can't mount disk image error type messages etc) I finally got onto this forum and find quite a few people sharing my problem! I wont wait as long next time I have a problem to enter the discussions, tho I must admit I don't get many problems with my Apple gear.
There doesn't appear to be a solution in the threads, but at least I am not alone!
How long before and will Apple fix this?

    DiskImageMounter.app is in /System/Library/CoreServices/.

  • Updated. See 3 new Qs at bottom...After XP system restore back to earlier FF version, FF won't open, it's in safe mode. How can it be opened out of safe mode? Can precious, previous History be retreived?

THIS IS A RE-POST OF THE QUESTIONS previously posted, PREVIOUSLY POSTED, now adding a request that 3 new summary questions--at the bottom--be answered.
NOTE: I specifically need answers to the 3 new, summary Qs now posted at the bottom of the Sequence of Events:
    Sequence of events:
    1) I was using Version 3.6.22 and I needed to
    upgrade to Version 6.0.
    2) Before beginning, I set a restore point in Windows XP so that in case I did not like 6.0, I could go back to the restore point which contained
3.6.22 and I would stick with that version.
    3) I did not uninstall 3.6.22 but loaded 6.0 on top of it, so to speak, thinking that would save my history and other features such as bookmarks. Opening 6.0 I was horrified to see it did not contain my history files!...so I had to go back to 3.6.22.
    4) After returning back to the restore point that contained 3.6.22, on the desktop, clicking on the Firefox icon, it won't open.
    5) I went to desktop, in lower left clicked Start, then clicked Programs, and yes Firefox is there as an installed program, however the tag reads Mozilla Firefox (safe mode)...so it's in safe mode and won't
open. What now?---~~~~~(end of original post).
HERE ARE THE EXACT 3 Qs I need answered:
    1) Can I retreive and save MY PRECIOUS HISTORY from somewhere? Can I force new 6.0 to find and retreive it from 3.6.22) And how would I do that? That's the reason I'm trying to go back to 3.6.22, because it likely still contains my history which does not appear in new install of 6.0?
    2) As it stands, go back to previous state now has Firefox 3.6.22 in safe mode. It won't open after XP went back to previous state containing 3.6.22. File tree says Firefox is installed but is now in safe mode. So Q2 is: Can I open Firefox out of safe mode and if so how?--I'd be done because it likely still contains my history.
And if not, can I get retreive my history from it somehow? Or somehow get 6.0 to rediscover it hidden somewhere (Show All History in new 6.0 install was empty).
    3) Do I have to give up on retreiving my history even though it's got to be somewhere in my computer? I did not uninstall anything.
If my history cannot be retreived, then I have no choice but to proceed in life with 6.0 without my precious History, a huge store of info and loss of data for me, big time!

You can undo a lot of changes, either via changing settings or prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page or via extensions.

  • Why can I see cookies only in safe mode?

[FF 3.6.10] I can read and delete cookies in safe mode, but in full mode the cookies list appears only as the little triangular icons; If I click on any one these I see the cookies for that site. But why am I not able to see the site name in full mode? This behavior startwed tonight, just after I'd registered a password with a new sit4e that I was visiting. thx eda

Thanks, but that didn't work. With extensions & plugins disabled, cookies still weren't visible in the full-mode cookie window, but were still there in safe mode. (the RealJukeBox & RealPlayer Version plugins wouldn't stay disabled between sessions & anoyingly I can't uninstall them from the plugin page, but these weren't the problem.
The cookie names showed up again after I cleared the recent history. Maybe the problem was due to the active login of the site from which I allowed the cookie before the problem appeared. I've gone back and re-taken the cookie, and everything seems fine now.

  • Unable to open https sites. can open when using firefox in safe mode.

Mozilla Firefox has been an exceptional browser, however in the last update I have experienced problems when trying to open https sites. They will not open and then time out. I do not have this problem when using Internet explorer. I have contacted customer service at the problem sites, and they have said other customers have also experienced this problem. I have gone into options and have changed various settings to see if this would solve the problem. It didn't, your response would be appreciated.. Please note if I use firefox in safe mode I can access these sites? My E-mail as follows: [email protected]

Did you perhaps install an extension to open sites with https
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press "Enter"
    # Use Find ("Ctrl+F") to look for '''https'''
    One such extension is "HTTPS-Everywhere"
As you probably know Firefox Safe Mode disables extensions and some preferences.

  • Blue Screen of death - now can't load Windows (even in safe mode)

Last night laptop (Satellite L500 19Z; Win 7 64 bit) crashed whilst playing CIV4. Got a blue screen of death; before I had chance to read any of the error messages on it the machine rebooted.
It loaded windows in safe mode fine then, and informed me as it had loaded safe mode OK the problem will be related to some recently installed software and I should uninstall programs I'd installed until it would load normally. As it was late last night I shut down and thought I'd sort it in the morning (in retrospect this may have been a mistake ....).
Today, when the machine tries to boot up it attempts a Startup Repair; unfortunately this fails every time and it says "Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot detemine the cause of the problem"
I looked at the log it produces but it passes all the individual tests.
I also can't access the advanced options for system recovery & support, which appears on the Startup Repair dialog box as it demands I be logged in, which apparently I'm not (presumably as the machine never got to the windows login screen before trying the startup repair). The error message reads "you must be logged in to access system recovery options. If you are having trouble logging in please contact your computer administrator for assistance. please click OK to restart the computer."
I've had a go at booting into the various advanced options (safe mode, safe mode with command prompt etc. but the outcome is the same).
I also tried the Repair your Computer option from the advanced boot options screen, but after the screen where it asks you to choose the language and keyboard, I get the same login error mentioned above.
Is there a way to repair or even run the hard disk based windows recovery (haven't got the recovery DVD with me as I'm away from home for a couple weeks) without logging into windows? I would have expected there to be but have yet to figure out how to do it.
(there are no disks in the disk drive, no other devices attached to the laptop - I've tried it with mains power and with the battery and have not noticed any differences)
    Thanks
    James

Normaly the reinstall data is on a separate part on your HD, not in Windows.
The register is only used for Windows.
If it doesn't work you can always try to reinstall from a DVD later.
It does mean all your data on C:\ will be gone. If you can hook your HD on an other PC you can try to safe your work with a recover prog.

  • I can't start my MacBook in safe mode or recovery mode

I have a 2009 MacBook pro (bought in August), I am running Mavericks on it  Not entirely sure the exact patch. Last night it froze up on me out of the blue. I was able to move the mouse but wasn't able to click anything, open applications or even pull up the force quit window. The cursor was replaced by the psychedelic pinwheel. I turned off my computer by holding down the power button. When I went to turn it back on the Apple logo appeared with a loading bar. After the bar was about 50% of the way through the logo and status bar were replaced by a prohibitory sign. I then tried to boot in safe mode and got the same results. I have also tried to boot from the recovery drive. I held down the option key (the cmd+R method doesn't seem to do anything) and selected the recovery drive but received the same results. I have also tried to boot up from an external harddrive with some time machine backups and received the same results. I do not have my copy of the install disc on me but  waiting to borrow a copy to try and boot from the cd. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what you did to resolve it. Or if anyone has any idea what the is causing the issue.
Thank you for your time. Apologies for any grammatical errors. I am typing this from my phone.

Note that Install DVDs are model specific so you can only use one from a MBP that is the exact model as yours.  Otherwise the disk will not work.  Duplicate Leopard disks may be obtained from Apple Customer service.  You will have to provide them with the serial number of the MBP (on the bottom) and there is a charge.
Based on the symptoms that you describe, your internal HDD has failed and will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Can't stop starting up in safe mode

My refurb 12" iBook was slowing down to a crawl so I booted up from the OS Tiger disk and ran disk utility, aparently with no problems to be fixed.
After that I tried to reboot with no success, stalling out at the blue screen. I then began to follow the posted instructions for what to do if you get stuck at the blue screen. I can start up in Single-User mode, ran fsck and again, no apparent problems.
I try to boot up in Safe Mode, I get to the log in screen, enter my password, and then I go back to the blue screen for about 20 seconds before it returns me to the login screen again, looking for a password. This goes on forever.
Now I can only boot up in Safe Mode, even if I don't touch any keys during startup. I can get back to Single-User mode or boot up from the OS X disk again.
Help. I don't know what to do next.
    Tom

    Jay:
Have your tried force restarting (Command + Ctrl as you hit Power Button)? If you get it to restart go to View Menu in Finder and select Show View Options. Select checkbox Keep Arranged by Name. Close dialog box.
Select as many of the Music files as you can, Open iTunes, drag into iTunes list. Hide iTunes (Command + H) select Music, show iTunes again and so forth.
    Hope this works for you.
    Good luck.

  • Can't use guest account in safe mode

    i have a late 2008 unibody macbook 2.4.
my wife has a late 2007 imac.
when i apply update i boot into safe mode and update from there.
on my wife's computer i can select the guest account and update from there.
on my macbook however, when i try to enter the guest account the display 'shakes and quakes' and doesn't allow me to use the guest accounts.
we are currently 'up-to-date' with updates (10.5.7 etc).
we have zero problems in general.
the settings appear to be the same on both computers (as regards accounts).
anyone have a clue, why i can use guest on the imac, but not on the macbook.
    thanks a bunch.

excellent points greg, but not applicable here.
there are 3 accounts guest, me, admin.
the guest is 'factory stock', the admin is 'factory stock' w/pass, and mine is mine.
as i stated i can use guest in safe mode on my wife's imac, which is configured identically.
there are zero passwords on our guest accounts.
additonally, all permissions on both computers 'check-out' ok per disk utility.
ps....i update only in safe mode so that nothing will interfer/hinder a proper update. we always download and install directly rather than using the 'automatic' update via software update.

  • I can only use the internet in safe mode.

    Hello,
I am connected to a internet cable and I can only connect to the internet when I use my MacBook in safe mode. I just want to be able to connect to the internet while not in safe mode. Please help me.

The problem was solved by reinstalling the system by using the original disks. Internet connection was prevented due to a missing file.

  • Can I back up iTunes in safe mode? Please help!!!!!

My windows vista laptop is about to die and I can only access it from safe mode. I want to back up my iTunes library but it's empty in iTunes when I access it in this mode. It's all still there because the disk drive is still full. Can I back up my library from folders and files through documents and not through iTunes itself? Many thanks.

Normally in C:\Users\<User>\Music. Unless already backed up via other means you should probably backup each <User> folder in C:\Users at a minimum so that you can selectively restore the data later,

  • Bootcamp can only open Windows 7 in Safe Mode

I've been using Bootcamp to play my old computer games on my Macbook Pro for about two years now, and I've never had any issues before now. Last night, I bought a game from Origin and found that it was taking a lot longer to download than I had expected, so after about four hours I decided to go to bed. I changed my settings in Windows to make sure the computer would not sleep when I closed the lid, but later forgot that I had done this an ended up leaving the laptop slightly open all night while I slept. I turned the display and keyboard brightness all the way down. When I went to check on my download this morning, I found that the computer had shut down and brought me back to the Mac login. But ever since then I haven't been able to get back to Windows. Every time I select it in Bootcamp, I briefly see a Windows loading screen and then I am taken to a plain black screen where I can't do anything. I can open Windows with Safe Mode, but that doesn't really seem to be getting me anywhere.
Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? Did I mess something up by leaving the computer open all night? Is there any way the display brightness might still be turned off and that's why I'm seeing a black screen (that seems like a bit of a dumb question, but I haven't been able to adjust the brightness levels during any of my attempts to start Windows, so I'm curious)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
