I can't no longer install win 8 on 2009 macbook pro 13.
Is there a workaround for this? Im ok if my computer isn't officially supported, but dammit, why should they restrict me for installing win 8 anyway?

I wouldn't recommend installing through a network connection.
For a Virtual Machine:
If you have the Win 7 media (DVD), use an app like PowerISO or MagicISO to make an ISO file of the install disc and use that.
For BootCamp:
Use the original install media and BootCamp Assistant, to install from your DVD Drive. -
How can I erase the data on my 2009 macbook pro that won't turn on because of a faulty motherboard? Do I just remove the hard drive, install it in a working mac, and erase it that way? Thanks.
You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

Trying to install Win 7 on MacBook Pro with OSx 10.9.3 and computer does not recognize install dvd
I'm using a 2009 MacBook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.3 and I am trying to install Win 7 using BootCamp 5. I've been able to install BootCamp before using the original Win7 install dvd on this computer but ever since I updated it (not sure how many time, its been a year or so since I last used BootCamp) and started using BootCamp 5 its been giving me problems reading the DvD. I know my internal DvD reader works because I've imported music recently but whenever I get into the very first step of BootCamp 5 (Download Support and Install Windows option screen) I click next with only install windows option checked and it tells me to wait for the DvD to be recognized when its already in. However it does come up with the option later to open with/eject the "blank DvD" which is the Win install DvD. Any ideas on how to get around this issue?

My suggestion would be to reinstall Lion from zero. No update.
I did that, and now I can install / uninstall Air without problems.

Just upgraded my 2009 Macbook Pro from OS 10.6.8 to 10.8 off the Apple website. Download (45 minutes) and install (35 minutes) seemed to go normally. But it will not restart; it keeps cycling OFF/restart. Ideas?

Hi everyone,
I just installed a Crucial MX10512 GB SSD into my 2009 Macbook Pro. It's definitely much faster, but the read and write disk speed is around 200 Mb/s for both versus the 300-500 Mb/s that the SSD advertised. Any ideas as to why? And is there anything I can do to make it faster? Before I installed it, it was between 80-90 Mb/s.
Specs:
- currently have about 460 of 511 GB of storage available
- am using 2GB of memory
- running on 10.10.2 Yosemite

You could make a clone of your internal OS onto an external disk. Hopefully you already have a backup of some form
A clone is a full copy, so you can boot from it. It makes a good backup as well as being useful to test things like this.
Carbon Copy Cloner will make one or you can use Disk Utility to 'restore' your OS from the internal disk to an external one.
Ideally the external disk is a fast disk with a fast 'interface' like Thunderbolt, Firewire 800 or USB3. USB2 can work, but it is slow & may effect the test.
You connect the clone, hold alt at startup & select the external disk in the 'boot manager'. When the Mac is finished booting run the speed tester.

Test the internal & compare to the previous tests
A running OS will do the following on it's boot disk…
Write/ read cache files from running apps
Write/ read memory to disk if memory is running low
Index new files if content is changing or being updated
Copy files for backing up (Time Machine or any other scheduled tasks)
Networking can also trigger read/ write on the disk too.
You may not have much activity that effects a disk speed test, but you can't really be sure unless that disk is not being used for other tasks.
Disk testing is an art & science in itself, see this if you want to get an idea …

A friend got a macbook pro with win 7 not dual just single win os installed on it, we want to install a mac os on it so we got a mac os x tiger ver 10.4 and the mac does not recognize the installation disc, then we managed to get a copy of mac os x 10.7 but when the litle wheel starts spinning we get a error icon on the screen any help, anyone as of what should we do....... when press the option at boot up time and all we get is the hdd that says windows and thats it... I like to help my friend but don't have enough knowledge to have this mac running.. when we press the C key it boots from the optic drive but like I mentioned before it just spins and get an error icon in the middle of the screen..
willyI bought a dvd drive at a swapmeet back in cali some time ago, and it came with a 10.7.0 disc... we gave it another try to the 10.7 disc and so far we got to the installation part so far we can read that we have 17 min. left for the installation to finish but it's been at the same screen for the last 15 min and haven't pass by the 17 min... anyway I will post any updates as the installation progress or fails... .....SIG what would you like to know about the cpu?

Hey guys i'm haveing a nightmare getting osx reinstalled on my macbook pro, firstly i have no experance with mac's but have always wanted too so when offered this macbook pro i snapped it up even with a dead HDD thinking it to be a very easy fix, so replaced the drive with a new one and still can't install osx
anyway here's whats going on, i booted the macbook with the instalation dvd it loads up as it should but when you get to the select drive part nothing is there so googled a few things and found the drive has to be set-up first so entered disk utility to partition and format the drive but get an error with whatever i do, i have removed and reseated the HDD cable and memory and have tried booting with only one stick to see if there was an error with one of the sodimm's, i have also tried accessing the AHT but none of the ways i have found work............ please if anyone can help me, please let me knowThanks for the reply mate, sorry to say i have tried every option in disk util i've even tied a couple of terminal commands to do the same thing with no luck, i have however been able to remove the partition but that's where the good news ends as i can't create a new one..... is there anyway to prep the disk in windows? as i don't have an external case or another mac?

Depending on your processor and RAM installed, you can install lion from the app store under the apple drop down menu. You have to have at least 2 GB of RAM installed and you have to have an intel core 2 duo processor to run Lion. This you can find out in "About This Mac" under the apple drop down menu. That is the only OS that's newer than yours and one that isn't installed from a disc

I have a MacBook Pro 2009. In order to get iCloud I have moved to Lion. Mountain Lion will slow machine too much. I now find that DVD player will not play the Disc Image .img movie files. When I open DVD player and click File and Open DVD Media, the Disc Image files are greyed out. The .dvdproj files are not greyed but if I click on them I get a message that "the media type is not supported". I could play the movies without any problem before I switched to Lion. The switch was done at the Apple store by an Apple Technician. Any idea what is happening?

MarkYou can get them from any Apple Store or any Apple Authorized Reseller or Repair Centre.
I had to replace the bottom feet of my late 08 Macbook Uni and went to an Apple Store in my area and they just gave it to me. Mind you, not all Apple Stores will give it to you for free.

You'll break your Mac direct installing Linux, it's not for the computer newbie, but very well seasoned geeks as Mac's are very different in hardware than Generic PC's and require special skills drivers and software to work with your hardware and control the fans etc. It's hard even on a 10.6. Mac, almost impossible now on a 10.7 Mac.
Like Joey said, use a virtual machine software, VMFusion and Parallels Desktop are commercial and Oracle's VirtualBox is free.
I recommend for you to buy the commercial versions as your not too well seasoned yet and you need support which costs money.
This way you can dump the whole mess and still have control with OS X.
If you want to direct install Linux, use a generic PC, that's what the boot disks/USB of Linux are made for, not for a Mac. -

Can't install a stable Windows 7 on my Snow Leopard mid-2009 Macbook Pro via Botcamp
I just erased the whole disk with Disk Utility and re-installed a fresh version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro with my original install disk and updated all the software.
I then created a 400GB partition via Bootcamp Assistant for Windows and successfully installed Vista.
I then successfully installed Windows 7 (not an upgrade) over Vista (I only have the official upgrade disk) and installed Bootcamp in Windows with the original OS X DVD.
I then upgraded Bootcamp from version 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2 to 3.3 and then to 4.0.
None of these versions have resulted in a stable version of Windows 7 because the screen randomly turns one color (usually blue or white) with no cursor or interaction possible and I have to shut the computer down by holding the power button.
I've tried the whole process with 32 bit and 64 bit versions with the same results. The funny thing (not so funny, really) is that WIndows becomes increasingly unstable the higher I go with Bootcamp. I've even tried running the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade utility but Windows 7 is totally unusable. Once at Bootcamp 4 the system can't even get past the windows boot process.
I'm pulling my hair out here because I can't think of anything else to try. I'm suspecting the problem is driver related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.I suggest you start over with the install of Windows. You can use an Upgrade version of Win 7 to do a Clean install.
Basically you have to Not put in the license key when asked and also uncheck the option to Auto Activate Windows when the system gets online, mThen once it is installed and you are at the desktop go to the System applet in Control panel and Select Activate Windows. Then put the license key in.
If for some reason that doesn't work then you do a second install of Windows7 over the top of the current install and that make the installer think you are Upgrading and the Activation will go through.

Since installing Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, I have many documents, but not all, that cannot be opened in either Pages 5 or in Pages '09. The names show in my document lists, but are greyed out. They do not show any extensions, but I'm sure at seast some of them are PDFs. As I cannot open them, I am unable to try to experiment with any solutions - I am not tech savvy, but can sometimes fix things by trial and error. I have no issues with sharing documents as I have no other devices. I just want to be able to open my saved documents! Also, the documents I can open have to be persistently coaxed to open to a point that it is extremely aggravating. I am not so happy with this recent "upgrade." Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
You use Finder to find stuff. It is what you use to look at where your files are kept and to rename, move or trash them. If you double click on a file in Finder it finds the right software to open it for you.
To open particular files you use the right software for each type. Usually, but not always, the software that made the file.
Pages opens files ending in .pages. Also .txt, .rtf, and doc.
Pages 5 is the latest (but certainly not the greatest) version of Pages. It has trouble opening all sorts of files including the older Pages '09 files but it will still do it.
Unfortunately Apple has chosen for Pages 5 to also save its files as exactly the same file extension .pages despite it being a different format that can not be opened by the older Pages '09.
As we all know Apple is wise and great beyond belief and would not do something that on the face of it looks extraordinarily stupid and shortsighted. Therefore we know that it must be our fault and we are not holding the software right. Because we are bad users, we must be punished, by either having to use Pages 5 or jump through hoops to avoid using Pages 5.
If you have installed Pages 5 any .pages file (old or new) will be opened by Pages 5. If you then save the file, Pages 5 will change the file format. So don't open your files with Pages 5 and don't save them if you do.
To stop Pages 5 opening and resaving your old files, you need to drag it to the trash and empty it.
When it is no longer around to annoy you, you can go back to using Pages 09.
