I can't open a pages document.

I can't open a pages document. It says I need a new version of pages. I searched for upgrades but can't find any. Am I being forced to re-buy the program in order to access my documents? I looked into upgrading operating system, but Mavericks says I can't - my machine is too old? Seriously? It is starting to look like upgrades are breaking what otherwise worked fine, then charging to upgrade to make it work?

Pages 5 requires Mavericks.
If you can't upgrade to Mavericks you will need to Export your Pages 5 file to Pages '09 or Word .doc/x format then open it with whatever Pages version you have (you didn't say).
You can open Pages 5 files inside Safari using iWork for iCloud beta and Send a Copy in Word format to yourself.

Can you open in Pages documents that were created in a 2004 version of Microsoft Word for Mac?

Pages '09 will open .doc files from Word 2004. The Mac OS is not what is in question. Pages '09 opens Word 2004 documents and if the same version of Pages will run in Lion and in Mountain Lion ..... Thats all that matters.
I trust you were using MS Office 2004 and would now like to buy Pages?

i can´t open any page document. Please help

You do need to give more information. What version of Pages, what version of OS X, have you ever been able to open Pages documents, have you made any changes to your Mac? Please be specific with versions, don't just say "I have the latest." Our crystal balls don't work over the internet.

  • Can't open old Pages documents in new system

I bought a new MacBook Air with Maverick OS X 10.9.4, but now I can't open my old pages documents. What can I do?  My old MacBook was pre 2008 so everything is iworks 08

The new version of iWork can only open iWork '09 documents. I had more than a few documents that I had to first open and save using iWork '09 before the newest version could be used.

  • I can't open any pages document

My associate hasn't executed an apple update in some time.  I typically do.  For over a month, he can't open any Pages doucment I send him.
Last night, I did an apple Update for pages that Apple had been requesting I do for about a month.  Now, I can't open any of my own pages documents in 4.3 or 5.0.1.  Documents I created yesterady I can't open.  I'm infuriated with Apple as every recommended update seems to trigger something else to not work as intended.  I'm constactly playing IT guy trying to simply keep thinks working as they're supposed to.  Can anyone help?  Thanks

Since you have already updated to Pages 5.2 on your Mac, you have two versions of Pages on your Mac & are trying to open Pages 5 documents with Pages 4. Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.

  • Can't open a pages document

It seems it should be very easy to transfer between the 2 mac programs. but I cannot open a Pages document with another computer running Appleworks 6. Is it not possible to open a iWork Paes documnet using appleworks. I have exported from Pages the different file types: WORD screws up the format and fonts; PLAIN TEXT does the same and I can't open RTF, HTML, or PDF files with Appleworks. Can anybody help???

As Sagesse notes, AppleWorks can't open Pages documents because it was released/updated years before Pages was made available. Apple does not claim that AppleWorks can open Pages documents.
Pages does not perfectly convert every document to a Word format. Nothing but Word does this.
But, plain text is plain text. It has no formatting, fonts, styles, etc. That's why it's called plain text and why your formatting, etc is 'screwed up'.
Regarding Peggy's advice that AppleWorks cannot open Pages documents converted to RTF. This is generally true, but not technically true. In any case, it's easy to work around.
AppleWorks, Pages and Word can all open RTF files. However, if you include an image in a RTF file, it becomes a RTFD file. So because most Pages documents contain images, these files will be exported to a RTFD file format. AppleWorks and Word cannot handle a RTFD file. To work around this either: don't add images to your Pages documents, or open the the RTFD file (it's really just a folder containing a RTF file and the images) so you can open the RTF file in AppleWorks or Word.
HTML is a poor format to rely on for word processing documents they look different from browser to browser.
AppleWorks can only import PDF files, page-by-page, as images.
Before you consider purchasing MS Office, first download NeoOffice/J. It's a free clone of MS Office that does an almost perfect job at Office file translation.
    Cheers.

  • It's happened twice in the last month- I suddenly can't open my Pages documents unless I get the new version (for $20!) What is going on??!!

Some documents, but not others, that I've created/edited/printed and worked with JUST RECENTLY suddenly won't open UNLESS I get the new version of Pages (for $20!!) I just edited some of these a couple of days ago! I edited one, printed it, etc. Now I need to look at it again and it WON'T open! I "need the new version of Pages??! What if I don't want to suddenly shell out $20 to work with documents I made on the version I already have? And why do SOME documents now look different (in a new style) while others look like they always have, and function normally?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • My only local print shop can't open a .pages document

Help! I have to have the brochure I've worked on for a week printed this afternoon, and the printer is pc only, can't open my file. When I save it as a word document, it is not possible to read the document, and much of the content is missing...it generally looks like a third grader threw it together. Any help?

It's the printer offices which are more numerous using Windows than Mac Os X which is really not the same thing.
    Sigh, you are wrong Yvan.
Between Microsoft Word and the printers raster image processor there has to be a page description language. Microsoft did not proceed with TrueImage as a competitor to PostScript, so Microsoft has had no native page description language between Word and the RIP. Instead Microsoft has depended on the Adobe page description languages PostScript and after 1993 increasing the Portable Document Format which is a derivative of PostScript level 2.
If a print shop receives a Word file, it opens the Word file and launches a print job from within Word that hands Word's internal data structures off to the Windows GDI Graphics Device Interface which in turn hands off to the Windows PostScript driver which in turn writes a PostScript file to disk which in turn is converted to Portable Document Format, if the PostScript is not sent directly to the PostScript Level 2 or PostScript Level 3 RIP.
It seems that you don't understand what is this forum.
Prepress has a first principle: GIGO Garbage In Garbage Out. Apple is responsible for the input to the prepress process, that is, for the input to the page description. If the input is garbage for whatever reason, then there is nothing the print shop can do with the printing master (well, short of hand editing the page descriptions in the PDF prepress editor which, believe me, is not for the non-technical).
Apple's job is to do the best it can to make sure the everyday enduser is able to produce input that will work well as the page description is processed down the line. In my humble opinion, what Peter has been asking for (deviceCMYK and device spot colour) would not be the best way to make sure the everyday enduser is able to produce a workable printing master, but then I got myself called a colour management (best not use that word) on another list.
The question remains whether Apple in its own terms, that is in terms of the device independent imaging models Apple itself developed, is doing the best for the everyday enduser. For instance, the Adobe PDF evangelist crossed himself in the OS X 10.3 time frame when it turned out that Quartz was converting TrueType to Type 1 instead of Type 42 in writing PostScript since the TrueType instructions are hurt by converting to Type 1 hints - not to mention that the obligatory CMAP Character Map is clipped when converting to Type 1.
I know you don't know prepress, and there's no problem with not knowing prepress, but please don't post to people that Apple's prepress support is satisfactory, because in fact it is not.

  • Pages can't open my .pages document

so i had a document that i needed for a presentation i was going to do, and i had it open beforehand to review it. i noticed that it had been edited because i accidentally pressed the tab button, so i undid the change. however i noticed that the little cirlce in the close window button was still there, meaning that it was still different than the original that was saved. i closed the document, and it asked if i wanted to keep the changes or revert them, and i chose to revert them. it froze up for a second, and then it asked me the same thing again, but it said something about having been edited by another program or something. not really paying attention, i clicked the revert changes option. it then told me that the document coud not be opened (or something to that extent) and then gave me an option to close the document. i was never able to open it again, ater that it just said that it couldnt be opened. i looked through the packages contents to see if it was different when compared to a working .pages file, but nothing was amiss. is there a way to recover this? if so, that would be great. Thanks!

When i try to open a numbers document on numbers 3.2 i've got the following log:

Does anyone figure out any solution? I guess my problem with pages and keynote is the same…

  • I can't open a pages document since installing Pages 5.2

I've read that I should remove 5.2 from my dock and reinstall Pages '09 to my dock. Then right click on a doc-get info-open with-Pages '09-click "change all" to set "09 as default. I don't know how to do the removal and reinstallation..

Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder. Perhaps with the matching Numbers and Keynote applications from iWork '13.
Open the Applications folder in Finder:
Menu > File > New Folder > click on and select the name of the folder > Change "Untitled" to "iWork '13" (the name is not important) > drag Pages 5.2 and any other iWork '13 applications into the folder > create a new folder and call it "iWork 13 No 2 "and drag the previous folder inside that > do it again with "iWork 13 No 3"
Pages 5.2 is no deeper in the system than Pages '09 and should be found last when OSX is looking for it.
Or you can simply trash Pages 5.2 after Exporting all your Pages 5.2 files to Pages '09 format.

  • I can"t open any pages documents after failure occurred while trying to close a document

I noticed that I am not the only one with this problem. I think it's an apple glitch. It is telling me that I need a newer version but I already upgraded it with OS X mavericks download. Come on apple fix this problem I do school work on my computer and if I did not save it in a DOC file I can not retrieve it. This is major problem, I have deadlines.THANKS!

Since you have already updated to Pages 5.2 on your Mac, you have two versions of Pages on your Mac & are trying to open Pages 5 documents with Pages 4. • I can't open a pages document on my air that was saved from my desktop through my idisk - please help!!

Pages is installed on my lap stop, desk top but I guess not on my Air - how can I read that document until I am able to load pages into the AIR - I really need to see and change this document?  Thanks.

It's a well known behavior which Jerrold and me described here some weeks ago.
I reported the bug to Apple but it seems that the engineers working upon the AppStore don't know the specs of the different kinds of iWork applications.
    They are three kinds :
    (1) applications resulting of the trial version + a bought registration code
    (2) applications resulting of the instal thru a bought DVD
    (3) applications bought thru the AppStore.
The appStore application is able to recognize the case 3.
Given what you wrote, it seems that it recognize case 2.
Given what Jerrold and me reported here, it doesn't recognize case 1.
In the first version, the app was fool enough to treat iWork '08 as bought 09 ones for a task
but make the difference for an other task.
This foolish thing (I'm listening Lester Young) was killed by the late update.
Of course, Jerrold's and my own versions are legal and up to date.

  • How can I have a Pages document that is shared with me under my Pages section and not open it with the link?

How can I have a Pages document that is shared with me under my Pages section and not open it with the link?

    Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.
