I can't open a .pdf file any more

i made the mistake of subscribing to adobe acrobat.  i couldn't use so many features that i dropped my subscription.  upon expiry, all it does it prompt me to renew when i click on a .pdf file. they used to have no problem opening with the free reader.  no ideas whatsoever from over an hour of the acrobat's chat side, they sent me to this forum...hjelp?

wfb: are you there?
Rachana: I understand that you are unable to open pdf files.
wfb: correct.  my subscription period ended and i am kaput
Rachana: May I know if you are referring to trial version?
wfb: no idea.  i know i paid for it, they charged me monthly and it was some kind of professional account.  can you look me up with my email address?
Rachana: Please allow me a moment.
wfb: is that long enough?
Rachana: Thank you.
Rachana: May I know if you are referring to Acrobat Pro Subscription Edition (one-year) subscription?
wfb: possible.  i think it was acrobat pro.  i am searching my email messages from you
wfb: looks like it:
wfb: Dear w bloxom, Your monthly payment for your subscription to Acrobat Pro Subscription Edition (one-year) has been received. Thank you for subscribing to Acrobat Pro Subscription Edition (one-year). The Acrobat Pro Subscription Edition (one-year) Team

Rachana: I have already sent the password reset link.
wfb: what does this diagnostic mean?
wfb: Adobe  The link you followed expired. Please restart the password reset flow. Adobe  © 2013 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All Rights Reserved.
wfb: when i click on a .pdf, it asks me to renew again
wfb: what can we do this time?
Rachana: Have you ever used trial version of Acrobat Pro 11?
wfb: i have no idea
wfb: how can i get this fixed? i've missed my meeting and my lunch
wfb: help?
Rachana: In this case I have 2 options, either you can renew the subscription or purchase full version retail product.
wfb: but...i don't use the product and simply want to open .pdf's. maybe you can explain what has changed at adobe?
wfb: has there been some change in policy that requires purchase in order to simply open, read and print .pdf's?
wfb: i don't know what to do
Rachana: You subscribed to a subscription, which needs to be renewed in order to use it, when the renewal stops, the product cannot be used any more.
Rachana: If you purchased retail version software, you could have opened the files, however as it's a subscription, it needs to be activated [ to activate the subscription you need to update the credit card details ].
Rachana: Unless the subscription is not renewed, no files will open from the acrobat pro software.
wfb: how do .pdf's open without it? as they once did before i purchased any subscription service?
Rachana: To open pdf files, adobe reader is needed, which is a free product from Adobe.
Rachana: However to make any changes or edit the files, you need to have adobe paid product.
wfb: i do not want to make any changes or edit files.  how can i revert to my former status?
Rachana: In this case I suggest you to download Adobe reader.
Rachana: Please click here.
Rachana: Are we still connected?
wfb: yes
Rachana: Is there anything else I can help you with?
wfb: so far it has stalled it's installation with an ïnstallation pending" diagnostic
wfb: i would like it if you could remain on the chat for long enough to open a pdf
wfb: it has installed and clicking on a pdf file still just sends me back to the "renew your subscription" diagnostic
Rachana: Request you to ignore the message  "renew your subscription"
wfb: o.k.
Rachana: In case if you face any issue with the Adobe free product Adobe Reader, you will have to use adobe forums link to trouble shoot the issue.
Rachana: The link for the adobe forums is
Rachana: http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_reader_forums
wfb: there are only two alternatives on the acrobat XI pro renew your subscriptioin prompt, "close"and "try again"
Rachana: I have sent the adobe reader forums link above in the chat, are you able to view it.
wfb: still not having any fun
wfb: trying
Rachana: In this case request you to use the adobe reader's forum link to trouble shoot this issue.
Rachana: Is there anything else I can help you with?
wfb: i still have no feedback, cannot open the file, missed a meeting, missed lunch. although i have been invited to join the adobe reader forum.  so i have joined and typed in my question.  is that really where we're going to leave this?
Rachana: I am sorry, it is an technical issue.
Rachana: As you have reached the customer service, please visit forums for resolution.

You have Acrobat Pro on your system. It will try to open PDFs, and of course it will fail. You must uninstall it. Then, you will need a PDF reader. So install Adobe Reader. That seems quite simple, but perhaps something is wrong. If anything goes wrong with these two steps (1) uninstall Acrobat Pro (2) install Adobe Reader, then please let us know the details.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • I can't open a pdf file.

My computer was working fine until about 2-3 weeks ago. Suddenly I could no longer open a PDF file. I had Adobe Reader installed and all was good. I asked our IT guy and he suggested downloading Adobe Reader again. I did this and still get the error message. Then I had a friend to tell me to uninstall and reinstall. That did not work either. The error message looks like this:
    Fill conversion - document name.pdf
Select the encoding that makes your document readable.
    Text coding (then 3 options)
    Windows (default)             MS-DOS           Other encoding
Then there is a pop-up window within the error message with all kinds of options.
    Help!
    Thank you!

  • Can't open web pdf files from my Reader DC because my IMac wants a completed license agreement to use Reader and I never saw that page during installation.

Can't open web pdf files from my newly installed Reader DC because my IMac wants a completed license to use agreement to Reader, and I never saw that page during installation.  How do I get past this?

You need to accept the EULA on first launch of the Reader DC application.
Go to the Applications folder and launch Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
This will bring up the EULA.
Select the "Agree" button if you agree with the terms
Assuming you selected the "Agree" button, Reader DC should open.
You should now be able to open PDF files in your web browser.

  • TS1702 iBooks won't load PDF files any more on my Ipad2. Anybody seen this one before?

    Hello All,
iBooks won't load PDF files any more.
I have a lot of PDF files so I thought I reached a maximum number of files or space so I deleted a lot of old files but this did not help.
I rebooted, synced, updated, restarted, etc. - everything that I can think of and I still have the same problem.
I don't remembered the last file that I loaded into iBooks, as I usually put them into collections.
I can still load PDF files into other applications like PDF Reader, but I prefer to have them all in iBooks.
    Anybody seen this one before?
    I have 64GB iPad2 and I have over 14GB free space.

There have been several threads on this topic over the last few weeks. It's not clear what the issue is, and it is not universal, but tend to effect users storing large numbers of PDFs in iBooks. Possible it has some thing to dowith capacity of the app, or specific characteristics of some of the PDFs.
You might have a look at the "More Like This" list to the left of this page.

  • Can't open some PDF files

These are probably very basic questions but here they go. I am having some trouble opening some PDF files from my school's website. I can download them just fine but when I try to open them a window pops up saying the file could not be open because there was an error.
The tricky thing is I was able to download and open PDF files from other sources (mainly email).
Because of that I went into Adobe's website and dowloaded and installed both Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader over the copies that I already had on my computer. Is that bad? Does the computer just write the new copy over the previous one I had without a problem or does it now have duplicated files in the program's folder that could lead to future malfunctioning?
Even tough I haven't noticed any changes in performance yet could that be concern for future problems (crashing, computer slowing down)? Should I reformat the HD to factory settings and start from scratch since I do not have almost any info/ files in the computer yet? Or am I better off  leaving the computer as it is and not messing with trying to reformat.
    When a
The other question I have is can there be PDF files that open only in Windows OS and PDF files that would work on both?
    Thanks in advance

Probably you're opening pdfs using Preview. Preview is very good and it'll open almost any pdf but not 100% of them, for that you must use Acrobat Reader.
What you did was fine, just keep using the computer.
