I can't open any applications on my old Imac G5

Hi!After I reinstalled the original OSX 10.3 on my old Imac G5 20 inch. bought in2005, I can't open any applications and access my files. How do I fix that? Thanks! Michel D

Hi! Brian
Thanks for your reply!
I reinstalled the OS 10.3 from the original disks i got when I purchased the G5. I can't open anything. I can't even see any files that I had before the reinstallment. Ithey must be there still because the hard drive shows that I have only 15Gigs of space left out of the 150 G of the total capacity. When I click on the apps icons at the bottom of the sceen nothing happens. I  also tried to install the most recentOS for that machine (OSX 10.5 leopard), the installment starts but stalls after a while, the little  coloured wheel starts spinning for ever. I womder if there's some hardware problem!!! This has been a great machine and i'd like to keep it alive. Thanks for any input.
Cordialement!
Michel D.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

• CAN'T  open any applications after mac os update 10.4.11

CAN'T  open any applications after mac os update 10.4.11 help

General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

hey, writing this from my phone. Please pardon how everything is typed.  Quick question. Just downloaded the pear square on program. But now I can not open any applications. I beloved the message that popped up was something along the lines of 'do not have permission to access" ...so... I don't know whether or not I downloaded a virus or not. I was also obviously wondering how I might go about fixing this? -Thank you for your timeo

• I can't open any application

I tried formatting my sansa player while working on my macbook pro. Since I did that I can't open any application at all. I click on them but nothing happens. I can only use the finder. I tried the disk utility but no joy. Could you please help???

Have you run "Repair Disk" from your install disks?
Steps for using Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc or Install Disk 1 that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

- Try a reset. Nothing will be lost:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Try downloading/installing a new app.

I can´t open any application of my ipod touch 4g. I have updated the software, download a new app, restart and reset the ipod but it´s still not working. Someone knows what can I do?

Did you try restoring the iPod from a previous backup or to factory settings yet?  If not, those would be your next steps.

Otherwise, you have a hardware issue, meaning you'll want to set up an appointment at your local Apple Store/Genius Bar to have them take a look at it.

• Ran disk utility repair permissions....now I can not open any applications on my Mac mini

my Mac mini (mid 2011. OS X 10.9.1). Was running very slow so I ran repair permissions...after re-booting my computer I can not open any apple applications.  I keep getting a pop up window that says " finder quit unexpectedly". When trying to open safari " safari quit unexpectedly".  I can open skype, google chrome.   The computer indicates that wifi is on and connected - however I can't seem to log into Skype or access any web pages.  What to do next?
One more thing, I keep getting pop up windows asking for passwords for different items if or keychain...I have tried to put in my password, but that doesn't work. Not sure what password it is looking for but the window won't go away even when I hit cancel

Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive.  OS X: About OS X Recovery
Then see if you can restart normally.

• I can't open any applications

I just installed "security update 2006-07 (Intel)" and "Security update 2006-07 (Universal)". I restarted, but now I can't open any of my applications, such as safari, itunes, quicktime, msn messenger. Its probably a result of the security updates, but what do I do now? I've restarted several times, took the battery out, and nothing is working.

First thing to do is see if you can get Disk Utility to run. It's in Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility. See if it'll open up. If it does try clicking on your HD in the left hand side of the window and then Repair Permissions in the lower corner of the app.
If it quits too then get your discs that came with the computer. Insert it, restart and while doing so hold down the C key so the computer boots off of the disc. Go to the Menu and select Utilities->Open disk utility and do the same procedure above.
Sounds like it might be some type of permission snafu.

• IMac froze, now I can power up but can't open any applications...

Ok, forgive me if this has been asked 1000 times already, I don't have time to trawl through every post one here.....
Last night I was happily using my iMac, got a new email and when I went to open it everything froze. I could still move the mouse cursor around the screen but couldn't minimize, quit or force quit any applications. I could also not shut down/restart the system as normal. I powered off using the power button and rebooted from there. OSX started as per normal but I still can't open any of the applications. When you roll the mouse over any of the program icons it tells you what they are but won't open them. I also still cannot shut down the system through Finder and cannot force quit either.
Apple's technical "help" line has suggested restarting in safe mode etc, but is there anything else I could try to resolve the problem?

Hi Tom, what were the results of starting in Safe Mode, does that sort the problem? If it does then it gives us an idea where to look. If not try Repair Disk.

• Can't open any applications

Hi all,
I got my MacBook a few weeks ago, and it's wonderful. I love it. Only two problems so far:
1. I think it's getting a bit stained like all the others have been, but hopefully when it gets worse i'll have it replaced by Apple.
2. (this is my question) Occasionally, I won't be able to open any applications from either the dock or applications folder. All I can do is open finder windows.
Restarting fixes the problem, but this is quite annoying, as I thought Macs didn't have these sort of problems and my uptime was only about 1 day.
Last time this happened, I noticed two things. I had unplugged a digital camera without ejecting it first (woops), and the temperature of the MacBook was in the low eighties (accordng to iStat Nano, which is quite accurate compared to CoreDuo Temp).
Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

(woops), and the temperature of the MacBook was in
the low eighties (accordng to iStat Nano, which is
quite accurate compared to CoreDuo Temp).
How did you get iStat Nano to provide the processor temperatures on your MacBook? According to the iSlayer.com webpage:
We get alot of emails asking about support for intel based macs in iStat Pro and iStat nano.
At this stage there is no support for fan or temperature sensors in Intel based Macs in either widget.

Help!
Thanks

Hard to say what's going on here. Open Disk Utility and check to see if SMART is verified. Also verify the disk. If problems are found, boot from your install disc and repair your boot disk.
One possibility is that your hard drive might be starting to fail. If you don't already have a good backup of your data, be sure and make one just in case. If the hard drive is failing, it will need to be replaced.
Another possibility is that the OS has become corrupted. If so, you will need to reinstall it. However, check out the hard drive first--if it's failing, it won't do any good to reinstall the OS, and you may not even be able to. Better to rescue your data first.
Good luck!
