I can't open any movie in iMovie
I downloaded iMovie '11 on my MacBook Pro and I haven't been able to open any movies in it. I keep changing their format but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?
Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

I've read some of the posts that seem to be related to my problem, but the solutions provided aren't helping me.
I can't import any movies into iMovie, regardless of format. I have converted my .MOVs to AVI, MPG4, etc. If I try to "drag media here to create new project", nothing happens. I try to Import from Camera, but it will only recognize the Built-in iSight (with my camera plugged in, of course). I have imported the movie files through iPhoto, but even from there iMovie will not open them.
I have seen a lot of posts about iMovie not recognizing Sony Cameras, and I am using a Sony DSC-H5.
Any help is appreciated.

You can use iSquint (free) to convert it to MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC. MPEG Streamclip (free) can be used to convert the file to DV/DV, AIC/Linear PCM, M-JPEG/Linear PCM, Photo-JPEG/Linear PCM, MPEG-4/AAC, or H.264/AAC. FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), or similar third-party, MPEG-based applications will also work here. Other audio compressions previously mentioned can also be used but I would normally recommend AIFF (Linear PCM) for quality and AAC when you want more compact files. Do not use QT Pro, iTunes, previous versions of iMovie, GarageBand or similar QT based applications for conversion if you wish to retain any audio content. (I.e., QT and QT applications do not normally process "muxed" media audio at the file level.) -
How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive? The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import. Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.
No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either. It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected. VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB. All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC. Is that the same? Thank you for your time and response.

I can't open any 60p .mov files in quicktime or FCP5. Sometimes in QT the audio plays but not the video. Footage was shot on a JVC GY HM150 which is supposed to record in native fcp format. Any ideas how I can open these files successfully?
Get ClipWrap2 and convert to an editable format for your version of FCP5.

I can move curser across screen on track board but cannot open anything ,even if I push the enter key..also the bottom corner of battery pack where it locks in is slightly lifted. I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word (for 2008), and stuck in a loop?
Whenever I select Word Microsoft Setup Assistant appears, asks for feedback, then after selecting okay (both on saying yes or no to feedback) goes on to a registration page. When I click on this it says I've already registered so I just click okay, and then move on to a update page. After this, if I click on Word, the process repeats itself.
As I said, I don't have the disk to reinstall, and can't find the Office Settings to delete as many pages have suggested I should try. Safe Boot restarting also hasn't worked... Really stuck and need Word very soon for work.
If you can help, that would be great, and feel free to ask any questions about the situation as I'm not an expert here.

JackFirst, export your contact from iCloud.com and save them on your computer in a safe spot some where (like you desktop). Use this to help you do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3606
Next, on both of your devices, go to Settings > iCloud and turn on contacts and select Merge. Then turn off contacts and select 'Delete form my [device]' when prompted.
Now go back to iCloud.com and select a contact (yes they will all be messed up again) and select Command+A on a Mac or Control+A on a PC to select all of the contacts. Tap the delete key on your keyboard (or right click /control click a contact and select delete).
You iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com should not be empty for contacts.
Go back to Settings > iCloud on both devices and turn on contacts again (you should not see merge this time).
Next, go back to iCloud.com and import your contacts (those exported .vcards). You can either drag and drop them into the empty contacts list in your web browser, or you can use the gear icon to import.
You cleaned up contacts should import correctly into iCloud.com and sync to both of your devices.

I'm running snow leopard. The try to open any .mov file in Quicktime, and I get an error message that says, "The document xyz.mov could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quicktime player understands. I'm a recent upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Thanks, MarkUnfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems. -
DynamicLink Media Server is not available. I can't open any video file in Photoshop CC and when it does, Photoshop freezers and I can't do anything else. I'm using OS X 10.9.4-3.1 GHz Intel-16 GB DDR3. Any help please?

Can't open quicktime movie that I exported from Motion 5 and can't import to FCP 7.
I exported (with current settings) from Motion 5 now i can't view my movie with QT Player an FCP
won't recognize it.
That's the message I get ?
I'm running Mac OSX but still on FCP 7 (upgrading to FCP X is NOT an option)

i think it was just a problem during the export. i tried a second time and it just worked fine -

I can't open any of my Word documents on my Apple Mac. The error code is EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT) and the blame module name is WordArt. The documents are still there, and I can open them on my iPad when I email them there. Any ideas?
Uhhhhh... Thank GOD... Got all of my files.
Spent some time on the phone with Apple Care... who was great to deal with but actually... not as helpful as I was hoping. It was suggested that I try DiskWarrior 4 to try to recover the files. $108 later, I had no files.
More calls with Apple Care and they were pretty sure that everything was gone since once the External drive was installed, like a moron, I let TimeMachine go ahead and back up my new MacBook... so it overwrote who knows how many gig that was my entire MacBook.
I wasn't giving up so I called Maxtor, the manufacturer of the external drive itself. They suggested file recovery software from I365... which is also a Seagate company (the makers of the drive). The suggested I simply use their demo because the demo version would find the files. If it found them, I could buy the software to restore them.
It found them! Another $129 after and I was able to restore all of them back to my old PC laptop.
NOW, I just need to figure out how to get the 50gig of HD video files off of my old laptop now and into my Mac and IMovie so I can actually make some DVDs out of them!
I get that Macs and PCs are different formats but I think it is ridiculous that formatting still means basically just wiping out or at least treating massive lots of old data as if it isn't there. There's gotta be a better way to do that. -
I had been on Safari for awhile and had to leave the computer for about 10 minutes. When I came back the mouse is responsive, but nothing else is. I can't shut down any program or the computer. I did a forced shut down, and it starts back up just fine but now I can't open any program. The mouse moves around the screen but nothing else seems responsive. After 5 minutes, my screen saver comes on like normal.

I suggest booting from the install dvd, repairing permissions (just in case) using Disk Utility from the dvd and using the 'repair disk' function too.
You might also see what starting in Safe mode does for you - hold the Shift key on startup -
I can't open any of my programs
When I turn my laptop on, it takes a long time to boot and when it does, even though I can move my cursor around, I can't open any of the programs. I couldn't even turn it off properly. I had to just shut it down by holding the power button. Any suggestions? I'm really frustrated.

IMac froze, now I can power up but can't open any applications...
Ok, forgive me if this has been asked 1000 times already, I don't have time to trawl through every post one here.....
Last night I was happily using my iMac, got a new email and when I went to open it everything froze. I could still move the mouse cursor around the screen but couldn't minimize, quit or force quit any applications. I could also not shut down/restart the system as normal. I powered off using the power button and rebooted from there. OSX started as per normal but I still can't open any of the applications. When you roll the mouse over any of the program icons it tells you what they are but won't open them. I also still cannot shut down the system through Finder and cannot force quit either.
Apple's technical "help" line has suggested restarting in safe mode etc, but is there anything else I could try to resolve the problem?Hi Tom, what were the results of starting in Safe Mode, does that sort the problem? If it does then it gives us an idea where to look. If not try Repair Disk.
Steps for using Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.) Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
