Distilling the Tech Note down, essentially you can't open .CR2 files in CS3.  I think CS4 is the first version that has .CR2 compatibility.  One option that doesn't involve upgrading to CS4 is to download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert your .CR2 files to .dng.  Then you can open them in CS3.
No, that isn't right.  The Canon 40D was supported in at least the last version of Camera Raw for CS3.  There are a few things you need to verify.
1.  In Photoshop, go to Help/About Plug-Ins and click on Camera Raw in the list.  It will tell you what version you have installed.  You should have Camera Raw 4.6 listed, and it should only be listed once.  If there are additional listings then you have a problem.  Camera Raw will now work.
2.  Get the download instructions from the Adobe download website and make sure Camera Raw is installed in the right folder.  It must be that specific folder, and there can be no other versions of Camera Raw in the Adobe file structure.
3.  Are you able to see your raw images in Bridge?  If not, then there is something wrong with your installation.
Check these things out and make sure everything is set up properly.  Then maybe we can help you further.

  • Unable to open Canon CR2 files after installing Camera Raw 7.3

I have photoshop elements 8 and have used raw files from my canon 450D for several years.  Just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 11 and it doesn't recognise the .CR2 files o, as far as I can tell any other type of Raw file.  This despite loading Camera Raw 7.3?
    Can anyone help?

    Now then ssprengel
I think we are getting somewhere.
I have not had a chance to look at the other logs you suggest yet.  But...........
I made sure the old Camera Raw.8bi file was remnamed with a totally fictitious extension so that the new file from the linkk you sent could not be mistaken..........but no joy.
I then copied the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Elements 8 equivalent folder, this is onlly circaa 11Mb instead of circa 20Mb, and..........
..........whoa and behold  ............  I can read all my .CR2 files through PSE11 and also PSE* still works!
    You are a star!
I don't know what other functionality is missing.  Maybe there is some.  I shall have to investigate.
Maybe the latest plugin only works on x64 systems?
So next steps are for me to a) review the other logs you suggest, b) try downloading the equivalent files from PSE9 and PSE10 and see if they work, c) ask Adobe why this has happened.
    Many thanks

  • Can't open Canon Cr2 file in Photoshop CS6

I purscahed PShop CS6 Upgrade a few days ago as an upgrade for the full CS4 Extended (which was upgraded to CS5 last year).  I installed CS6 as an upgrade to the installed and registered CS5.
Neither Bridge CS6 nor Photoshop CS6 will read Canon Cr2 raw files, and the "About Photoshop" splash screen indicates my purchased CS6 is a Beta version.
What has gone wrong?  Should I uninstall CS5 and CS6, reinstall CS4 and then apply the CS6 upgrade to CS4?
    Thanks

    Hi Chris
Thanks for the reply.  My reply is a bit delayed from time zones - I
live in Australia & had to go out to do some work.
My CS6 upgrade was bought from the Adobe Store Australia on May 10.
    Order number is:  AD003318323AU
The downloadsI got on May 10 seemed to cause the problem.  I had trouble
with the Akamai option but used a second option to get CS6 in 2 files -
the small exe and the big zipped file.  The small exe wouldn't unzip the
main file so I unzipped it manually and installed from that, and somehow
or other I finished up with the beta version.  I'd never installed the
beta version before this, but the "About Photoshop" splash screen made
it obvious that I had it then.
When I got home a while ago I ran the Adobe download process again and
this time it worked, and file sizes and date last modified etc were
different in today's download.  I deactivated the first CS6, uninstalled
it, ran Adobe Creative Suite Cleanser Tool and reinstalled from todays
downloaded files.  My new CS6 is the correct & current version.
Adobe will probably have another confused customer somewhere who did
what I did at about the same time and got the beta version instead of
    the real program.
    The CR2 files I couldn't open were from a Canon G1X.  My Canon 5D Mk2
    files opened properly.
    Thanks again

  • Can I open multiple jpeg files in Adobe Camera Raw ?

Hi, it seems that I cannot do this - not an option in PE11 ??  Such a pity if not !
I can open one JPEG at a time, or multiple Raw images in ACR.
Have checked other sources including Barbara Brundage "The Missing Manual" but whilst it does not
specifically say you cannot, likewise there is no indication that you can.
    Cheers

Many thanks, Barbara.  Must admit I had more or less assumed that was the reason.  Just living in hopes !

  • I have Lightroom 3.6 and Camera Raw 6.6 but I can't open my CR2 files from my Canon eos 6D

    Hi,
I have Lightroom 3.6 and Camera Raw 6.6 but I can't open my CR2 files from my Canon eos 6D
Lightroom doesn't show a thumbnail image and when trying to import it says the camera format isn't supported. But normaly Camera raw 6.6 should cover the Canon eos 6D
    All help is welcome,
    Thanks

No, the older versions are not free.  If you upgrade you will have to get Lr5 unless you can still find Lr4 for sale somewhere as it has been discontinued by Adobe.  You can also use the FREE DNG converter to convert the 6d files for use in Lr3.6.

  • Opening Canon CR2 files in CS3 on a Mac

What Camera Raw plug-in do I need to open Canon CR2 files in Photoshop CS3 on a Mac?
-Please send download link and installation instructions.
    Thanks

    Martha,
You have not provided any information about how you updated to ACR 4.3 or details about your setup, whether you have purged the Cache through the Tools menu in Bridge, trashed Photoshop and/or preferences, Repaired Permissions, or performed any other maintenance, nor what error message you get or what happens when you try opening your images, nor any information as to the exact version of Photoshop you are running (10.0.1?) as well as the OS (14.0.11 or 10.5.7?).  You really need to post in the Camera Raw forum so that you can browse existing threads and so we can point you to relevant posts.
Provided the files themselves are not damaged or corrupted, the most common problems are installing the ACR plug-in in the wrong place and not removing the obsolete ACR plug-in that is originally installed by default with Photoshop.
If you go to the Photoshop menu > About Plug-in > Camera Raw…, you should see only one instance of Camera Raw and it should be 4.6 when you select that menu item.
If you have any other question, please post in the Camera Raw forum, not here.  A discussion of this nature should be over there, where it can benefit other Camera Raw users, not just you.

  • How to open a jpg file with Adobe Camera Raw

I know it is possible to open a jpg file with Adobe Camera Raw using Bridge but is it possible to do this using PSE7?  Thanks.

Yes. In the editor, File>Open As, and choose camera raw as the format. John Ellis also has a script for doing this directly from the organizer, but I don't have the link right at the moment. Hopefully he'll be along with it sooner or later.

Other than upgrading to photoshop cs6/cc 2014 or buying adobe lightroom 5.6, you could use the adobe dng converter 8.6 to convert the files to dng copies, which photoshop cs5 should then open.

You might check on the canon website and see what's available, though it depends on the camera as to what software canon offers for free.

  • PSE can't open Canon .CR2

    Hi,
I have recently bought Photoshop Elements 12. I have uninstalled PSE 9 and installed PSE 12 on my Windows 8.1 computer. But it crashes about 80% of the times when I open Canons .CR2 (raw) files from my Canon 550D. Any suggestions, or should I return PSE 12 and reinstall PSE 9 again (which worked fine)?
    BR, Andreas

You need to make sure you have the latest version of ACR which is version 5.6. Some of the Adobe links are not what they seem and lead to earlier versions. Use the download for PSE8; it will work with PSE7.

  • Adobe Raw - Can't open my CR2 files in Raw??

I am relatively new to Photoshop and trying to open a file in Adobe Raw.
My camera is a 70D and I am definitely shooting RAW.
I go into Photoshop, File, Open and select the CR2 file I wish to open then down below I change the file format to Photoshop RAW and suddently there is nothing there.
    What am I doing wrong?

Photoshop RAW is not the same thing as the RAW file that comes out of your camera.  Once you have the CR2 file selected, either double click it, or press the Enter key, or click on Open.  Any of those actions will open the CR2 file in ACR  so long as your version of Camera RAW supports the 70D
You need ACR 8.2 or later according to this list.  That means Photoshop CS6 or CC

  • Canon 5d Mark ii and Camera Raw in CS3.

Bought a new camera, Canon 5d Mark ii. Cannot open the RAW files. Can open them from my older Canon camera. Not sure which Camera Raw comes with CS3. Not sure if I have to upgrade. If I do need to upgrade to at least CS4 that may be doable. Otherwise OR until I do, am I better off just using the Canon software for now? Advice please!!!

That camera was supported for the first time in ACR 5.2, which ran with Photoshop CS4.
If you are not planning on upgrading your Photoshop to CS4 or CS5 right away, you need to download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter version 5.7 to convert your raw Canon files to DNG raw files first.  Then you will be able to open those DNGs in Camera Raw in CS3.
You should update your ACR in CS3 to version 4.6 ASAP, though.  ACR 4.0 is woefully obsolete and nobody should be running that old version.
Be aware, however, that you will be leaving a lot of image quality behind by staying with that old version of ACR in CS3.  Camera Raw 5.7 (the current and last version for CS4) is light years ahead of ACR 4.x.   ACR 6.1 (currently a Release Candidate) which requires CS5 is even a bit better than ACR 5.7.
ACR 4.x is really old technology.  If you can afford that camera, you most certainly can afford to upgrade to CS5.

  • I can't open my CR2 files in Photoshop CS5

I have a Canon and this silly CR2 is really confusing me! Going from an Olympus to this is a TOTALLY different ballpark.
For those of you to roll your eyes-I have looked through other discussions about this and I can't figure the problem out myself. So please help me if you will! I have checked the Camera RAW setting and I'm certain it's correct. Maybe I'm just missing something else?! Please help! I don't want to convert them all to TIFFs.....

I thought I looked at the list yesterday and it had mine listed. I have a Canon 70D.
Yes, it's listed and was first supported by Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.2.
Now do the second step by seeing which version of ACR is compatible with which version of Photoshop.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
You'll see that Photoshop CS5 is only compatible with ACR 6.0 through 6.7. In other words CS5 will never be able to open Raw files from the 70D (released July 2013) - or any other brand new camera whether Canon or Nikon.
So you need CS6 or Photoshop CC to open Raw files from the 70D. Or from any other brand new Canon or Nikon.
This is not a Canon problem. It's a CS5 is out of of date problem and would apply regardless of camera manufacturer. If cameras saved in DNG format, you could still use CS5.
DNG?! Is that similar to RAW?
    Yes.
Raw files are proprietary and are specific to camera makes and models.
DNGs conform to open standards. Adobe created the DNG format to avoid the very problem you're facing now. However the camera manufacturers prefer to stick to their proprietary Raw formats thus forcing Adobe and its customers into this never ending update and upgrade cycle with Camera Raw.

  • I can not open a crw image in photoshop camera Raw.

When I go to open a CRW Image in CS5,Bridge It will not open.It says Could not complite your request because it is not the right kind of document.Need help bad.
PS How do I tell what version of Camera Raw I have.By the way I have a Canon EOS 10D camera.Thanks.

Within Photoshop go to the "About Plug-in…" menu item just below "About Photoshop" to find the Camera Raw version number.  On which menu that is depends on your platform, Macintosh or Windows, which you neglected to mention.
Raw files from your camera have been supported since version 2.0 of Camera Raw for years and years, so it's not a question of your version of ACR.  Any version of ACR that runs in CS5 should open those files.
I suspect your raw files are damaged (corrupted).
