I can't open itunes! is there a solution?

When I tried opening itunes, the hourglass would appear for a few seconds then disappear, same with the itunes.exe in the task manager. There is no error message when I try to open itunes. My Quicktime opens, no problems. I've tried repairing, un-installing, re-installing, updated my plug-ins on firefox, and the msconfig solution.. nothing. I've also look to see if all my driver's were updated, some needed but still doesn't help open itunes. After reading many questions and solutions to this problem I can't seem to find one. I'd rather not un-install it again because last when I did that and re-installed it Quicktime would'nt open and I would get a error message. But now I've got that working again. Currently I am running the Microsoft Windows Malicious software removal tool and so far no files infected. It's been driving me crazy for 2 days now, I love itunes. If you know of any other solution that what I just listed please let me know. I would appreciate it.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Go to iTunes > about iTunes. What version are you running? If necessary, hold down the option key while starting iTunes and create a new, test library so it will start.

Hi! I really hope someone can help me with this-
iTunes just had a popup that there was new software to install, so I chose the update to iTunes. The download was almost finished, but then it stopped and said there was a problem with the download (obviously) and to try to install it from within the program. Fine by me. Only, I can't open iTunes now?? It tells me that, "The item refered to by this shortcut cannot be accessed. You may not have the appropriate permissions."
I'm not even going to try and pretend that I know what that means, lol. I searched my entire computer for iTunes and every shortcut/folder/etc with 'iTunes' in it gives me an error message of some sorts. D:
I even tried to re-download iTunes from this site, but it gets halfway and then gives me error message 2324.
What do I do from here? I really don't want to uninstall iTunes (if it even still exists on my computer) because I'm afraid I'll all the modified song information that I just spent literately hours updating last week. >_<

Similar problem here. iTunes11 notified me it was available. However, auto-update failed. So, I downloaded for manual update. That failed with "permission" message. I am administrator on this machine (WIN7). I tried uninstalling old version, but it failed with same permission issue. I now can't start iTunes... throws permission message. So, I'm completely dead in the water. Does this stuff get tested before it's shipped?

There are various things this could be. First restart you computer
Check to see if you QUicktime works as iTunes can't work without it. If it doesn't work, describe what happens.
Then run a virus and spyware scan as malware has been known to do this.
Then check to see if disabling your forewall allows iTunes to start, this hasn't been seen for a while, but in the past firwall blocking has caused iTunes to hang.

Just upgraded to vista and now can't open itunes

I just upgraded to vista (what a pain) I have uninstalled itunes and then reinstalled itunes but I still can't open it. This is what happens. When I click on the itunes icon I get the licence agareement which I check agree and when it goes away I get an error message which says: "The folder Itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." I have tried clicking on the Itunes icon and have gone to itunes properties control panel and clicked on security and tried to get permission many times. After reading post's on this fourm I went to the itunes folder on my c drive and went to the same control panel and tried again but to no avail. I had no trouble with itunes on XP and have used it for years. Btw I can open Quicktime player but it will not play my video files (I don't care because quicktime is not my default player). but I can open it.
I have an Ipod nano and I want to use it to listen to audio books but I can't load them onto it without itunes.

Yes I still have a problem. This is what it is in a nutshell. With User Account Control on in vista I can't open itunes. I am not sure what happens when I try but here goes. First I have installed itunes into my computer and have an icon on my desktop. When I click on that icon the first thing that happens is that I get a licenses agreement which I accept. As soon as I accept the agreement it goes away and I get an error message that says “The folder Itunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." The only option that the error message gives me is to say “OK”. When I click on the OK button on the error message it goes away and nothing else happens. Because of this problem I have uninstalled and installed itunes at least 5 times.
I have tried to read as many post in this forum as I can trying to find a solutions to this problem but to no avail. I have also gone to the vista forum and have read as many posts as I can about itunes problems that are there but to no avail. I have tried many fixes that have not work except one. And that was “to turn off the User Account Control.” When I turned off this control I was able to open itunes for the first times. Since then I have opened itunes many times and use it to load my ipod. But when I turn on User Account Control I have the same problem and I can’t open itune. I am open to suggestions on how to fix this problem and at this time I am not sure what is wrong. go to the directory where the itunes librairy is stored (google search!). Select the file hit "command+i" on your keyboard or control click on the file and select get info. there is an option to either lock or ulock the file. unlock it. restart your computer and see if it works.

if you're getting that on launch, but QuickTime is launching fine, then let's try getting a crash log to the Apple Engineers for a look.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
drwtsn32 -i
And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
Generate the crash, collect the crash log, and and send it as an attachment to this email address
Find that file and send it as an attachment to this email address.

Earlier iTunes (and supporting applications) need to be completely uninstalled before you can install the new version. Here's the complete Apple info on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Mobile device application will most likely fail to uninstall, so you would need to visit its location(s) and manually delete the files THEN folder(s). The location of the folders is documented in this link from Apple.

I was trying to sync music to my Iphone through my Computer, Mac 0S X Leopard version 10.5.8. Couldn't open iTunes. There was a update for iTunes and I downloaded it but before it could be loaded to my computer, it said my operating system needed to be 10.6.8. If you can update your computer to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that would be the smartest thing to do. Otherwise you can restore an earlier version of iTunes from your Time Machine backup. You can purchase Snow Leopard from Apple's online store for $20 and then use the 10.6.8 Combo Update to get the most up-to-date version of SL. You can find that download at:

Before doing ANY update make sure you have have backed up your system using Time Machine or create a bootable clone onto an external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

This sounds like your shortcut is still pointing to iTunes 7 (assuming you upgraded to version 8). Find the version 8 application and it should work.
The problem with the Mac version 8 is that it crashes consistently at startup, and the solution to that is ditching the new library files and reverting to the most recent version 7 library (copy from from the Previous iTunes Library directory and delete the date suffix).
There was a known issue with proxies settings in earlier versions of 7 that has apparently been reintroduced in version 8.
Way to go, Apple.

I think what you are saing is that you have error message free launch failure with iTunes.exe persisting on the processes tab .
If so this is commonly due to a problem with cryptographic services. Here is a diagnostic Method for working out the problem:
Before checking if iTunes works, restart your PC or close the iTunes.exe process with task manager if it is running.
A couple of simple things to try:

But usually it is due to a problem with cryptographic services.
Check to see if you have your smart card service and that it is not set to disabled. For some reason iTunes needs it.

you should find the smart card service in the list. Report back with your findings.
Malware can interfere with cryptographic services and also prevent a resolution so it is important to check that your system is clean before proceeding: Run a virus and spyware scan with up to date definitions.

You should be able to copy and paste the individual lines to save on typing.
Make a careful note of any error messages you get, they are important for diagnosis. Report back any error messages especially the names of any dlls mentioned.
If there are no errors try starting iTunes.

Long shot.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
