I can't open old Word documents or save new ones. Help!
I'm not tech savvy at all and I really need Word for school. Please help if you can.
Whenever I'm trying to open an old file I get:
"File is locked for editing.
Locked by: another user
Filename: "insert name"
You can open file in read only"
When I click "read only" I get:
"Word cannot open document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the filename might contain invalid characters."
When I try to save a new file I get:
"Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permission error on the destination volume."

Message was edited by: Lama323The answer is as above wrote yes. Does it do it perfectly, the answer is no. Opening a .doc/.docx in Pages'08 will generate a frame warning message I find. I find text and symbols are preserved well, but formatting is not perfect. An example of my own is in the screenshot below. Same page 28 on a .docx but formatting of the document is not exactly preserved as you can clearly see. Where preservation of formatting is critical Pages is good, but not perfect alternative to Word '08.

I open Word documents on my Mac using Pages and textedit without any problems.
I also have a copy of OpenOffice and it can also open Word documents without any problems.
Could you please provide more details on exactly what you mean when you say you having troubles opening Word documents? What kind of troubles?

By the installation wizard, do you mean the First Run screen? If yes, please follow the steps below to disable it:
STEP ONE: If you have not already, download the Office 2013 Administrative Template files. These can be downloaded from

STEP TWO: Copy the ADMX files to %systemroot%\PolicyDefinitions and the ADML files to the language specific folder (such as en-us) under %systemroot%\PolicyDefinitions.
STEP THREE: Using the Group Policy Management Editor go to User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Microsoft Office 2013 | First Run |
STEP FOUR: Set the Disable First Run Movie to Enabled and the Disable Office First Run on application boot to Enabled

I have a new IMAC with a Maverick platform (I can update to Yosemite). I did all graphics on a G5 Power PC (very old), in Freehand (very old)...

Can I still open and work in Freehand on this new Mac?Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though. -

I think you have a corrupted upgrade. Do you have a backup of your old system?
Here's what you should do for now:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

How can I open a word document in C++ with a CNiWordApplication object?

For an application, i need to open a word document using VisualC++ and CNiWord classes (CNiWordApplication, CNiWordDocument...). I successed to create a new CNiWordDocument with the CNiWordApplication CreateDocument() function. But when using the OpenDocument() I have error message about violation error. Must I create another objet before calling the OpenDocument() function? Is it possible to have an example of code to open a word document?

I bought a new MacBook Air with Maverick OS X 10.9.4, but now I can't open my old pages documents. What can I do? My old MacBook was pre 2008 so everything is iworks 08
The new version of iWork can only open iWork '09 documents. I had more than a few documents that I had to first open and save using iWork '09 before the newest version could be used.

How can i open encrypted word documents and still be able to edit?
I need to open encrypted word documents at my work to edit reports which are sensitive in nature, then be able to send them back to colleagues encrypted. I would like to do this all on my iPad. Are there specific apps I can download to be able to do this? Right now I'm using Google Drive for documents online and would like to be able to utilize this.

Can't open a Word document in Pages '09
Alright...I have tried to search the forum to see if someone is having the same problem but I haven't seen any. I cannot open a word document in pages. at all. Just says "The document “filename.doc” couldn’t be opened."
Any suggestions?This was one of the first symptoms of "un-updated" Pages in Snow Leopard. Once again, here are the two things you may not have done that fix quite a few problems in Snow Leopard.
First, use the Mac OS 10.6.3 combo updater. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '08 that is Pages 3.0.3 & Numbers 1.0.3. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.3 & Numbers 2.0.3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work. -
How to recreate old .indd document into a new one

Last year I did a catalogue of sportswear products. It contained about 550 items and each cell-item had about 3 images and 5 textframes. Now I am creating a new catalogue, which should contain about 80% of old items. The images & information according to the product will be just the same. The problem is, that it has to have a completely different look {layout & styling, etc.}.
I would like to ask for a master-adwice: Do I have to cut & paste 10 000 times the images & textframes from old INDD file to the new one and restyle & resize & repose all afterwards or is there some sophisticated recipe how to use the computing power of my machine and simple tell the program, that all the textfields in old INDD document styled by "Header 01" should be imported to the textframes styled by "NewHeader 01" in the new INDD document? Or something with Named Ranges:
Old-INDD > Excel > New-INDD?
I am eager to find the way how to save a week of monkey work of Ctrl+C > V

I trust in you gus & thank you for your time in advance!If you delete a used paragraph style, InDesign asks you with what it should be replaced. Is that easy enough? :-)
But you do have to take care to inspect the original style for "based on" features, as well as all other styles that are derived from it.
Are the style changes so big you cannot get away with re-defining the existing one?

CAN'T OPEN MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENTS AFTER DOWNLOADING MAVERICK
I downloaded Maverick OS X 10.9.3 and now I can't open my Microsoft Word documents! HELP!!
The message I receive when trying to open a document read: You can't open the application "Microsoft Word" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
I wish I knew this before I upgraded to Maverick. It happened to my iphotos as well but after purchasing new software for iphoto, I have been able to retrieve my photos.
I hope I don't have to do the same for my documents.
ThanksI wouldn't recommend buying the boxed version of Office 2011. A new version of Office is coming out in a few months and you'll be stuck with old software. The next version of Office will be subscription only. You can buy Office 365 now and it will automatically upgrade you for free when the new version comes out. This is a monthly fee.
If paying monthly is not an option for you, you can also look at buying Office 2008. While it's End of Life software like Office 2004 (this means it will receive no further updates) it will run in Mavericks with only a few minor glitches. You might be able to buy Office 2008 at a more reasonable price. Otherwise I would like at LibreOffice or OpenOffice that Esquared mentioned above.
