I can't play DVDs [solved]

Hi,
I did a fresh install of arch today and now I have problem to play DVDs.
I can mount dvd without problem but how to play it (I tried with su and same problem)?
If I type
mplayer /dev/hdd
I get the followig message:

Can't Play DVD (with VLC, Totem, Xine, MPlayer), But Works in Windows

I have a DVD that I can't play for the life of me in Arch. I've tried VLC, Totem, Xine, and MPlayer. And I do have libdvdcss installed. Other DVDs work fine.
With VLC the DVD menu comes up, but when I hit play I get choppy sound and no picture. And I get these errors:

With Totem I get the DVD menu and when I hit play it just freezes.
With Gxine I just get a popup window that says "Media stream scrambled/encrypted" (but again I do have libdvdcss, libdvdread, and libdvdnav installed). In the terminal Gxine reports it's using libdvdcss to get the encryption keys and it appears to all go fine, but then I get the "Media stream scrambled/encrypted" popup window.
Mplayer plays the the DVD but the image is scrambled and the sound is a little choppy.
On the other hand, in Windows, on the same computer, the DVD plays fine with an older version of VLC (0.8.6d) and with Media Player Classic with the K-Lite Codec Pack.
I'm especially baffled that VLC does it in Windows, but not in Arch (nor in Debian).

That is very possible. All those players use (or can use) direct show. As soon as you have the needed filter installed by SOME software all those players will be able to make use of it. And i think Vista even had dvd filters pre-installed.
Btw. One of the more common protections on dvds is called arcos and is developed by Sony. Google for it

Can't play DVDs in XP

Have you guys experienced this problem? I can play DVDS on my Mac side, but when I play a DVD in my Xp side, windows media player indicates that there is something wrong with my video card and indicates that I need to update the video card. I don't really know what's going on. I fully installed everything from the Leopard DVD.

If I'm not mistaken, windows looks at the DVD drive as a removable drive. Its possible I could have accidentally "safely removed" it. But I don't know. Everything was working fine last night because I used the DVD ROM for drivers and other stuff. Today its gone.

Can't play dvd's in quicktime

I'm trying to convert movies to MP4 to get them on my I-pod video. I get how to do that, but I'm trying to simply open a DVD on quicktime, and i can't! I open finder, double click on the DVD name and all that comes up is VIDEO_TS, and all i can get from there is a bunch of random files... Does anybody know why i can' open DVD's on quicktime?

QT does not play DVD movies natively. Apple does sell a mpeg2playbackcomponent that plays some DVDs but it has a number of limitations, including that it will not play mpeg-2 in transport stream format. It also will not play encrypted commercial DVD movies or sound that is in AC3 format. It does not export sound from mpeg2. Read the FAQ for the component here:

Can't play DVDs on secondhand M300? Do I need drivers?

i know that user:RachelClark has already posted about the same problem, however i would like to know if rachelclark or anybody has figured out, why i cannot play DVDs on my portege M300? do i need drivers? if so where can i get them? any help/advice would be appreciated.

It is very stupid situation with used notebooks because you dont know what previous user has already done with it. I can also imagine that previous user has watched DVDs with different area codes and the latest one is set as default. If the latest DVD movie was with code 1 (USA and Canada) you can watch DVD movies with this code only.
If you try to use DVD movies for European market code 2 it will not work anymore. Check drive properties in device manager under DVD Region tab.

bought HP 2000 Notebook PC -2d49WM with AMD new 10/2013. took out of box a few days ago, updated to Windows 8.1. Have wireless home network and internet working. Cannot play DVD's. Please help?

It could be a couple of things...
1. You need to install the DVD playing software again as a result of the upgrade.

2. As a result of the upgrade, the DVD is not recognized.
If you do not see a DVD drive listed in 'This Computer,' then a driver error occured during the upgrade.
Please see the link below and try each of resolution steps 2, 3, 4 and 5. One of them (normally #3 or #5) will fix the problem.

Can I play DVD on my PC and stream it to Apple TV ?

We don't usually buy movies online and we're not going to do that in the future. So is it possible to play DVD on my laptop and watch it on my big screen through ATV ?

There is a way around this. You can "rip" the DVD on your PC and then import the "ripped" movie into iTunes and then you can stream it via ATV2 to your TV.

If you truly have a G3 with a Bordeaux personality card, it uses an on-board hardware decoder. You didn't mention what version of OS 9 you're using, but if it's 9.2.2, you're probably trying to play a DVD using Apple DVD 2.7, and it won't work. Try uninstalling DVD Player 2.7 and associated INITs (Extensions) and installing DVD Player 1.x (I use 1.2, I believe 1.3 works as well.) Keep the previous player and INITs backed up somewhere just in case.
You can find Apple DVD Player 1.3 on the 9.1 install disc and 8.6 update, IIRC.

Can't play DVDs with Totem

I cannot get Totem (Movie Player under GNOME) to play unencrypted or encrypted DVDs. Although it works fairly well with mplayer, I'd rather use Totem. Whenever I insert a DVD, Totem starts automagically (as it should) but spits out an error saying that a plugin is missing. I've installed every required gstreamer plugins along with libdvdcss (for encrypted DVDs). I know I could use VLC or GMplayer or Totem-xine but frankly I'm baffled that this won't work under Arch but works fine under Ubuntu (I dual boot between these two distros). Thanks in advance.

I think it has to be said that playing DVDs is not one of totem-gstreamer's strengths at the moment. The Movie -> Play Disc 'Whatever' menu option just gets me the error about not having the appropriate plugins, even though I have the whole collection installed. The command line "totem dvd://" will play a DVD but without either DVD menus or the ability to successfully change the audio track (so no viewing Night Watch without learning Russian first, for example!).
Swapping out totem for totem-xine ought to get working DVD playback with menus; however, if you're going to install xine-lib then you might as well go the whole hog and install xine-ui or kaffeine, both of which are much better movie players IMHO.

Can't play DVD and use Spotlight at the same time.

I have been running in to all sorts of problems while playing a DVD. I have TV shows on DVD, so I watch them while I work. Everytime I have one playing and I open Spotlight to search for something my PB begins making this very loud noise. I don't know if it is my DVD player or something else, but as soon as I delete what is was I was searching for in Sportlight, it stops. It really bugs hearing this noise, because it sounds like something is wrong. If anybody can help, that would be great.

Oh sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear.
I have noticed that when you ask the optical drive to do one thing, it spins perfectly well and does what it is supposed to.
If however you ask it do a second thing while it is still doing the first, then the laser skips between the two jobs and sounds strange.
So... If you had a dvd or cd with 2 large files on it and
a) Selected BOTH files together and copied them to the desktop, the drive would spin fast and transfer the files.
b) Selected one file to copy and started the transfer to the desktop, THEN while the first was copying, selected a SECOND file from the DVD and started copying that, you would find the laser skipping between the two jobs.
I thought that if you do this, and it is the same as what happens when watching a dvd and using spotlight, then it could be that spotlight is indexing the dvd while it is playing and the drive is therefore trying to do two things at once.

I can't play DVDs. Ongoing problem possibly.

A few months ago I had a problem with my optical drive. It had failed and was stuck with a disk inside. Apple replaced the drive and I checked that it would allow for a disc and release it.
Foolishly, I didn't check to see if it would play a DVD. It does not. The DVD Player application has also seemingly disappeared and when I search for it, nothing comes up. I can put and disk in and take it out but it makes a big whirring sound.
I downloaded VLC and whenever I put a DVD in, VLC opens and I click play. It only plays a very small amount, only the copyright warning bit. Then the film just stops and I'm left with the grey VLC application.
What the heck can I do? I should have sorted this out months ago but I had exams so it didn't really bother me that much. Obviously now I want to fix it. It's still in warranty. Also CDs play but the whirring thing is still there too.

Have you tried opening the DVD with Quicktime Player? :
Insert DVD, open finder, click on dvd, right click on the movie and select Open With. From there select Quicktime Player, if it is not there click Other to browse. In the window that opens, scroll to Quicktime Player in your applications.
Or, have you tried a different DVD? Some DVDs, especially pirated DVDs, have problems. The best way to make sure it is not the DVD is to use a known good DVD. Make sure the DVD you are using works in a different Macbook.
Some whirring noise is normal, especially the first few minutes after inserting the DVD/CD.

Mplayer can't play DVD: libdvdnav?

mplayer dvd:// failed, and mplayer's website said to try "mplayer -nocache dvdnav://"
I never see the disk in fdisk -l, but this command is at least able to read the title of the dvd...which hints that the device is correct and the disk is mounted (does it not?). I have no idea where to start. The first error is at libdvdnav...

Please help: i suddenly can't play dvds

i'm using os 10.9.2 with an internal superdrive and external asus blu-ray drive (sbw-06d2x-u). i'm stuck with region code 3 on dvd player and use vlc to play the rest. all of a sudden, i'm having problems watching dvds.
1. inserting into internal disc drive
all discs churn a while, then are spat out
2. inserting into external blu-ray drive
- blu-rays: no problem
- region 3 dvds:
vlc: it can play the disc, but video/audio quality is horrendous. playing the copied version is fine though.
dvd player: no problem
copying: no problem
- region 1 dvds:
vlc: after opening the disc, "rdisk1" appears on the playlist, before changing to the title of the dvd with a yellow triangle at the side and the duration of the film. there's no error message - it just doesn't play.
copying: i get this error message "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in 'VTS_01_0.VOB' can't be read or written (Error code -36)".
i suspect these problems started happening after a recent security upgrade. i've tried repairing the hard disk and pressing apple-R at startup, to no avail. please help.

so i sent the mbp for a diagnosis: it has a faulty superdrive, track pad and noisy fan(s). the external blu-ray/dvd player is fine. we tried dvds from code 1, 2, 3, 4 - only the code 3 disc (which region i'm stuck with using apple's dvd player) was able to be played on vlc. the guy said that the problem was to do with region lock.
before i send it elsewhere for a second opinion, can someone please confirm whether if the default dvd player is locked in a particular region code, dvds of other region codes can still be played on vlc or mplayer?

Audigy 2 ZS Platinum - Can't Play DVD-Audio Di

Please help!
I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum set up. Everything about the card works great - with one exception: the only DVD-Audio disc I can play using the Creative MediaSource DVD-Audio Player is the demo DVD-audio disc that came with the card!
I have tried playing a couple of DVD-Audio discs that I bought, but I can't hear anything.
Is there anything I can do about this?

First is to set the Recording device to MIC2. The front panel device is considered the second microphone. Basically whatever program you use, I would assume it has to recognize this second microphone. Make sure you ahve it selected under the sound mixer (task bar Icon) "Line in 2/Mic 2" underneath "REC" on far right side. Then you can go from there.
