Just upgraded to flash 8 on OSX, but now I can't publish
preview any of my MX 2004 files, I get an output error can't find
URL? If I create a new flash file in 8 and publish preview, it
works fine??? any pointers?

Hello! I am brand, brand-spanking new to Captivate and Adobe products. I asked the Adobe Help Desk if, after purchasing Captivate to create e-learning, I could just let my students access them. The Help Desk people told me that, no, my students each had to purchase a license in order to even see the e-learning that I had created for them. I thought this is ridiculous so thought I'd ask y'all what the real situation is. Once I purchase a version, can't I just publish my e-learning to any website I want?
Thanks!Yes you can just publish your projects to HTML/SWF or HTML5, upload them to a website and give the link to anyone to view in their web browser. The Help Desk person obviously misunderstood your question and thought you were asking if end users could also use Captivate itself, rather than just view the output.

PLEASE HELP! My objects have no stroke/fill unless in publish preview. I can't see what I am doing?
I have CS6 Flash Professional, Windows 7 Professional, File I am trying to make is an ActionScript 2. I have to use ActionScript 2 for it because it is a school project. I can click the oval tool, set the stroke size to 2.0 stroke to black, fill to pink and drag to create the oval on the stage. while i am dragging, and when i finish dragging it is still just a thin green outline of an oval. No fill, no thickness to the stroke, and the only color it will be is green. When i click publish preview and load a preview for flash the pop up box shows the oval with 2.00 stroke size, black stroke, and pink fill.
It seems like no matter what I try to draw or make for the stage it just shows up as this green outline and wont display any of the stroke/fills that i select for them. Is this something in my settings that I need to change?
If someone could help me out it would be really, really appreciated!!!You appear to have things displaying in outline mode. There are a couple of places/ways this can happen.
The first, more obvious place is on the timeline. If you look at the layer you are drawing in, at the end of the section where you name the layer you should see a small square. That square controls the outline mode for that layer. I cannot tell from the image you show if it is active or not, so try clicking on it to switch it between outline and not outline mode to see if that fixes things. The color inside the square will be a solid color if it is not in outline mode.
The second, less obvious place to look in via the top menu bar... select View -> Preview Mode -> and make sure Outlines is not selected. -
Captivate 4 can't publish or preview files/sound layers appear black
After re-installing Captivate 4, I was unable to preview or publish files. Additionally, my sound layers appeared as black, empty layers.
I had a difficult time finding a solution, so I wanted to post it here in case somebody else has the same problem.
I was indicating in my searches that I was unable to publish or preview files in C4 and could not find a solution, then I switched the focus of my searches to the audio layers and that's when I found a solution at: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2009/03/adobe_captivate_4_installation.html
Now, I have to say this for anyone who may not be aware. You should always back up your registry anytime you make changes to it and that changes to the registry can cause problems. Having said that, here is the fix I used:.
Adobe Captivate 4 Installation Issues on Microsoft Windows XP
You can use SubInAcl tool from Microsoft to try fixing the permission issues in the Windows Registry.
Close all instances of Adobe Captivate and do the following steps -
1) Download the SubInAcl tool from Microsoft Download Center and install it.
2) Download this zip file
3) Extract the zip file in a temporary folder. You will get two files - restoreRegPermCP4.bat, restoreCP4regentries.bat
4) Copy the restoreRegPermCP4.bat to the folder which has SubInAcl.exe installed. Typically this would be at C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\.
5) Double click to run the restoreRegPermCP4.bat file.
6) Copy the restoreCP4regentries.bat to the folder in which Captivate 4 is installed. Typically it is at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4
7) Open command prompt and navigate to that folder.
8) Type restoreCP4regentries.bat and press enter.
9) Make sure that all the messages that popup say "DllRegisterServer in 'some dll name' Succeeded"
This should have fixed the registry issues and things should work fine.
I hope this saves someone hours of searching for a solution.So glad it helped you! I know what you mean about Adobe.

I can see a preview of the photos, but I cannot access or edit them. They say "the folder cannot be located" and "the photo is missing". I have gone through multiple Adobe tutorials to try and recover them to no avail. Any tips?
Backup catalogs wouldn't have helped with this problem anyway, but naturally, you shouldn't delete backup catalogs for a while.

I can't publish to iWeb, it doesn't seem to be able to login to my icloud account. any ideas?
I've been trying to publish a site on iweb. It seems that iweb is unable to sign in to my icloud account. I push the publish to mobile me tab, push the sign into your account tab,( already a member). I get the barbers pole for 30 seconds or so, and then, nothing happens. Any ideas anyone?

I can no longer open any attachments that are sent to me. I click on and get cannot preview (but have had this for ages). I am clicking on download and nothing happens. It does not download. I clicked to install a new version after updating and clicking repair. But still the attachments won't open including invoices I have received today. It is all attachments not just pdfs.

Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

My macbookpro is not opening pdf sites from safari or firefox, it goes to the address but just gives me a black screen. I can however open a pdf file that I have saved on my HD, it opens on preview. any thoughts? osx 10.6.8

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again. -
When publishing a captivate I get the message "Swf compilation failed. Note: Please verify if any of the actionscript keywords is used as user variable name." and it won't allow me to publish the Captivate, can anyone help?

ThanksI had similar tonight after I'd made a lot of changes (adding images, videos). Author restart didn't work, so restarted macbook & reconnected iPad. Then it was OK again.

Can no longer Preview in Captivate 6
Yesterday, everything worked fine in Captivate 6. Today, I can no longer Preview slides or Publish.
When I try to Preview, the Generating Slides progress bar makes it to about 65% and then disappears. Nothing else happens after that. When I try to Publish, I get similar results and then an error window which says "Publish Failed".
I did three things this morning that might have contributed:
1) I upgraded to the most recent version of Flash Player (Adobe Flash Player version 11.4.402.265)
2) I removed many items in the Captivate Library that I was no longer using.
3) I tried to publish to SWF and HTML5 format, ran into a series of errors, and chose kill for the dialog boxes that came up.

500GB drive / 330GB still available
Here's what I've tried:
1) I tried opening and previewing other Captivate files, one saved and working yesterday, one more than a week old, but no luck
2) I restarted Captivate, no luck
3) I asked Captivate for any updates. I installed one Adobe update, Adobe Media Encoder. Still, no luck
4) I rebooted my computer, no luck
5) I uninstalled Captivate, including Preferences, per directions on Adobe website, then I reinstalled Captivate, no luck
6) I uninstalled Flash Player following directions on this page

Including restarting my computer and checking that Flash Player was no longer installed.
7) Reinstalled Flash Player from an old image I still had downloaded/dated Aug 13th.
This is version 11.3.300.271

9) Quit Captivate, then moved the following folders/files out of ~/<homedirectory>/Library/
Adobe Captivate 6.0
Adobe HeadLessCaptivate 6.0
com.adobe.Captivate
com.adobe.Captivate.plist
com.adobe.Captivate.savedState
10) Opened Captivate. Still no luck.
Since I reinstalled Captivate, reinstalled Flash, removed the /Library Captivate preference files (unless there are more), rebooted several times, and have tried multiple Captivate files (all local on my laptop), I'm at a complete loss for what to try next. Any help would be great appreciated.I created a brand new blank Captivate 6 file, applied a theme, inserted a few new slides and tried Preview. It worked! All four of the Captivate files I used in my previous testing were based on one file which hadn't been touched for two weeks. Somehow while working in the lastest file, either removing unused items from the Library or killing errors while Publishing, something somewhere got corrupted or removed. Something that all four files must have pointed to, since as soon as the latest file broke, all of the other files stopped working as well. Since the original file was inherited, I'm not even sure how to go about finding the problem. In my case, it won't be too big of a deal. I will create a clean template file and rebuild.

Bandwidth profiler and publish preview to HTML?
Really? These are no longer present? I see that it shows the swf file size history in the properties palette but its not the same nor nearly as convenient as COMMAND/B. Publish Preview swf embedded in HTML is just gone and any search I do to find out where it is brings up the new Canvas publishing abilities. How can features that have been in for a decade be taken out.
Yanking tools out that have been in a piece of software for a decade seems like a really bad idea. I still use Flash but only for Display. Everything else is "HTML5". I upgraded to CC to check out the canvas support. The bandwidth profiler and the publish preview taken out has caused my entire workflow to change, not in a good way. Flash is already on its last leg. Adobe should be in touch with its shrunken user base. Its used for Display, Games and some video at this point. It has a much more narrow focus now. I use the bandwidth profiler 30 times a day since Display has strict file size constraints. My banners use dynamic content so I need to see them embedded in HTML so I used the publish preview function just as much.

Flash 8 Pro: Publish Preview & Keyboard Layout Problems
Hi,
Hoping someone can help. I am a NEW Flash 8 Pro user and have
discovered two problems I cant seem to resolve:
1. When I press F12 (or select Publish Preview | Default
(HTML) in the menu), although my project publishes correctly,
producing all the correct files (including a working HTML file), my
browser does not open and display the swf. I tried changing my
default browser and on several projects, but the problem persists
2. For some reason, my keyboard is set to the US layout
instead of the British layout...this is the only application that
is doing this and it doesnt appear to be an option that I can
change inside Flash.
Can anyone help me with these issues? It would be grately
appreciated.
PS: I am on a high-spec Windows XP SP2 PC (if that is of any
assistance)Did you ever get your issue with the F12, publish preview,
not loading your browser? I have just upgraded from MX 2004 to 8

Publish Preview returns blank flash window
Hi guys,
I recently switched computers, going from a windows vista with Adobe flash cs5.5 v to windows 8.1 with Adobe flash cs6 v12.0.2.529.
We've been working on a flash project in cs5.5 and everything worked fine however now I'm getting some strange behavior.
The problem I'm having is that the publish preview returns blank.
It has the right size and stage color but nothing is shown.
And I can't retrieve images from a runtime shared library.
Here's some sample code that illustrates the problem (this used to work fine in cs5.5):

With the test02 Sprite I try to retrieve an image from a runtime shared library but it never shows up (it did in cs5.5 do i need to make any new setting changes?).
I'm not getting any error messages and it seems fine with the code.

CheersFew random things I'd try..
First, are you running this in debugger? (CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER)? If not then use that means of executing and put some breakpoints in the code so you can watch the code execute step by step to see what's generating an error. In publish settings for this SWF in the SWF parameters make sure you check to permit debugging to get more verbose errors:
Explicitly including ExternalInterface rather than flash.external.*;. It should include it (and everything in the package) but I've had lookup issues with this before. So:
import flash.external.ExternalInterface;
See if that clears up the break on that line. You should set a break point above that line however so you can step into the command and watch for errors.
Make sure your access toggle (network/local files) is correct to access your RSL.
Sometimes a couple more lines of code for clarity can help a lot. Break up your getDefinitionByName line into 2 lines, maybe adding in a condition just so you can step through it and analyze exactly which part of that compound statement is going wrong. It could be as simple as your "new (...)" isn't being cast to a Sprite before you assign it so the line fails. So try:

if (test2Class)
var test02:Sprite = new test2Class() as Sprite; // cast
By stepping through it you'll see if your definition cannot be found (RSL or link issue) or if assigning it to a Sprite (test02) is the issue (perhaps it's a MovieClip or some other unexpected type and this fails).
