I can't remember my administrator name

and therefore cannot install updates.  How do I retrieve original administrator name?

Your tag line says Mavericks, so restart the Mac holding the Command and R keys.  From the Utilities menu bar item, choose Terminal.  When Terminal opens, type EXACTLY:
resetpassword
and press Enter.
When the Reset Password window opens you select the hard drive, and then you will see a list of the users on the system.  Select the admin user.  Then type a new password in the two spaces provided, do not add a hint, and click Save.  When the Login Password Reset window opens, click OK. Back at the Reseet Password window, lower right corner, click Reseet.
Then go to the apple, left side of the menu bar, Restart.
You now have reset the admin user's password.
But are you talking about a different problem, that of the Apple ID of the user for the download of an app?  If that is the question, you must find/remember that Apple ID and password or the app cannot be updated.

It's always particularly helpful when your profile is filled out (and up to date).   Ideally you should mention your product or computer model, the model identifier and the OS you are running.   To find the detail go to …  > About this Mac > (plus) More info.  A rough guide to your location can often help too.    Anyone trying to help you would be greatly encouraged to see this.

  • I can't remember my admin name-and I can't find my install disks!

Whenever I install new software, the "enter your administrative password" window has popped up with the administrator name already in the top field, so I'm used to entering the password but not the administrator ID. Today, when I tried to install new software, the window popped up with no administrator name in the top field. This is horribly embarrassing, but I can't remember what it is! Worse, I can't find my 10.5 install disks. I could boot up from 10.4, but I've heard there are lots of problems with account names and passwords between 10.4 and 10.5. Is there anything I can do to recover my admin name? I'm comfortable using terminal to execute basic command-line information.

Niel - thanks! My usual admin account had lost its admin capabilities. I had typed in the right name and password; it just was no longer recognized as an admin account! So I followed the instructions at your link and it worked brilliantly. Thanks!

  • I have a apple account with $25.00 that was never used ,i can't remember my Account name except I believe it was Farside.  I now have a account that I had to create and put $25.00 on this account because I forgot my first account log in.

How do I retreive my old account that has 25.00 on the account that I have forgotten the log in name.  I know it has Farside as part of the log in.  I have an old account name in hotmail and i believe it is Farside67 or Farside57 anyway I remember seeing the name Farside when i logged in.  now my log in name is [email protected]  How do i retreive it?

You'll have to contact Apple - which is a better option than offering up what might be your login details to the entire world!

  • How can I change the administrator name?

I'm getting ready to sell my old I-mac. How do I change the administrator name or delete it?

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. If this is not possible then simply erase the drive. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.
