  • Can't remove user files from trash

    I tried to remove user.
    The operation crashed.
I later deleted the user directories while signed on as another user.
Now the original user files are stuck in the trash and I can't delete them.
    Can't even reset permissions.
What should I do to rmeove them?
    Thanks

You don't delete a User account by dragging the User's folder to the trash.
Open System Preferences > Accounts (or Users and Groups I believe it is in Lion).
You cannot be logged in to the account you're deleting, and you must be logged in to an Admin account.
Click the padlock to unlock the pane, select the User in the list of accounts and click the - (minus) sign below the pane.
You'll be asked what to do with the users home folder - simply select delete and click OK.
No need to get yourself in a permissions pickle.

If you are unable to empty the trash, try holding the Option key while selecting Empty Trash.
Otherwise, some steps in the following link may help you.

    Hey there Matt.dvs1,
Although there is not a way to remove past purchases from your iTunes account completely, you can hide them so that you don't have to see them if you don't want to. This article will help you do that:
iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases - Apple Support
    Hide your purchases
Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
From the Store menu, choose Store > Sign In, and then enter your Apple ID and password.
    Go to the iTunes Store.
Click Purchased from the Quick Links section on the right side of the iTunes Store.
Choose a content type by clicking Music, Movies, TV Shows, Apps, or Books from the top of the window.
A list of your purchased items for the content type you are viewing will appear. Mouse over the item you want to hide until an X appears its top-left corner.
A confirmation dialog will appear once you click the X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How can I remove .nrw files from my NOKIA Asha 200...

When I am connecting my NOKIA Asha 200 with my PC by data cable, I am watching almost 50 nos. *.nrw files inside the Image folder. I tried to delete all those file, but I was unable. Is there any one, who can tell me how to remove those files from my phone memory?

Back-up your data and then Factory Reset your phone ...(Menu-->Settings-->Restore Factory settings-->Settings only.. followed by 12345 which is default security code, unless set by you) .. When the phone reboots, check whether these .nrw files are now converted to .jpg .. If so, you should be able to delete them now ...

  • Cannot remove stubborn file from trash

I have a problem with a very stubborn item in the trash that will not be removed. This is a zero kb folder that when using different trash methods, often indicates input/output error. It slows the whole system whenever selected or otherwise being used e.g. for trashing etc...
    I have tried:
    empty trash
    secure empty trash
    force empty trash
Trash It! utility (from trash can and from desktop)
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/<file_to_delete>
Nothing doing. I first noticed a problem when doing a routine repair permissions. This was very slow and finished up by listing a number input/output errors in image png files in an images folder inside a dictionary package (Oxford English.dictionary). I trashed the .dictionary package (and restored from an earlier Time Machine version which seems to work fine). However, I could not remove the offending package from trash. After all the above efforts I am left with just one empty folder; this was called 'images' but is now just a jumbled name of letters and numbers. Repair permissions no longer signals any input/output errors but is still slow to complete.
    Any suggestions or help appreciated...
    Thanks

    You wrote...
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/<file_to_delete>
Have you tried rebuilding the Trash itself? That usually blows away anthing...
At the prompt, copy and paste this command
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
    Press Return.
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will be invisible.
    Enter it and press Return.
Log out and back in or restart.

  • Still Crazy After all these attempts......Can't remove an item from Trash

PREVIOUSLY POSTED (TWICE!) I've got a file stuck in the trash that won't go away. The trash will empty but that file never goes away. I can't move the file out of the trash, nor can I rename the file. The file name is a bunch of weird forward slashes and I have no idea where it came from. If I add files to the trash and them empty it, the new files will be emptied but not this weird file. I have tried everything I can think of...Secure Empty Trash, downloaded "What's Keeping Me" software,WhatsOpen software, Trash It! software, Growl, Main Menu (admittedly not sure how Growl WhatsOpen, Trash It! work)..... nothing works!
Don't have any other hard drives....do have Word for Mac and Flip4Mac but don't have any other Window applications (Quicktime is not Windows, right?) - it's pretty much 100% Apple
Any suggestions on how to get rid of this pesky file?
Have received lots of suggestions but still have the file!! Doesn't seem to impact the computer's operation but now it has become personal - me vs. "the file" ....and the file is winning.
    Bob

I've seen two things that absolutely can not be removed from the Trash, no matter what, from a Mac. The first is a file that is a result of having a Windows install, as in Boot Camp, where one needs to boot into Windows and run its version of repair disk. The second case involves Windows, but indirectly. It is possible for Windows users to name a file using illegal (in Mac and UNIX) characters, and for a Mac user to get this file, usually by downloading. Neither the Mac Finder nor Terminal could cope with the illegal characters in the file name and the file will stay until the disk is reformatted. One of the latter cases I remember was a song by ABBA which someone got from a friend in Iceland. It's been awhile since I last saw this problem reported. A notorious example was a file from Adobe in Vietnamese, in the Legal folder. Trashing the Adobe application left this file in the Trash. In that case if one booted from the OS install disk and ran Repair Disk, then rebooted, the Trash could then be emptied. If the file is driving you nuts, you might try that. It might work for your file too.

  • Can't empty GarageBand files from trash

I am creating GarageBand files; when I move them to trash and then try to empty the trash, I get a message saying I need to make sure they are "unlocked" and permissons are all okay, and then it gives me two options:  Stop or Continue, neither of which successfully deletes the file from the trash.
I have gone to the file's "Get Info" and confirmed the the "Locked" box is NOT checked, and that my permissions are "Read and Write" and I've even tried to unlock the little lock at the bottom of the Get Info screen.  To no avail, I still cannot empty the file from the trash.
I have checked user communities and tried to hold down the Option Key while I empty the trash.  One time out of 4 or 5, this works.  I have also tried to hold down the Option AND shift keys at the same time while I empty the trash.  No difference.
The only thing that seems to work is one user's suggestion to open the "Terminal" utility and type in some command that supposedly resets permissions and empties the trash and fixes everything.  This has worked both times I've done it, but then the next time I put a new file into the trash, it's once again back to being stuck and "locked."
I'm not sure whether to post this in GarageBand community or Lion/general pages, so I may do both...but can anyone help me here?
    Thanks.

Now that I posted - More Like This offered the solution - hold Option key while emptying - works on locked files also. Thank You Very Much !!!

  • How can I remove audio files from ipod totally not just playlist

I understand how to remove from playlists, how can a file be totally and permanently removed to free up memory?

If you sync by playlists, then remove the song from the playlist in itunes, then sync. The song will be removed from the ipod.
However, if you have genres, artists, etc checked, then you would have to remove that genre, artist, etc from the song info.
If you sync by checked song, then uncheck the song and sync.

  • How can I move mp3 files from trash to iTunes?

I accidently moved a group of MP3 files (songs) from my iTunes to the trash.  After doing a little research, I saw the suggestion of creating a folder on my desktop and dragging them from the trash to the new desktop folder.  So, I did that, and as far as I can tell, the songs are all there, sitting in the folder.  But when I tried to drag the songs from the desktop folder to iTunes, I got this message:
"Attempting to copy the disk Macintosh HD failed.  You do not have enough access privaleges for this operation."
This makes no sense to me.  This is my private computer so I should have all the privaleges I need to do anything, right? And I'm not trying to copy the "disk Macintosh HD", right?
Anyway, can you help me move the songs back into iTunes--or to the podcast so I can then move them to iTunes?  FYI, the songs have names like, "download 124.mp3" and the Kind is "mp3 Audio."  I originally got these songs via a podcast from a radio station (KCRW). I have iTunes 11.1.1.
    Thanks!

    ed2345,
Thanks!  I did that and the songs are now back in my iTunes.  Some of the songs went back to the podcast and some went to the playlist.
UNFORTUNATELY, the songs did some sort of massive duplicating so that there are now over 100 duplicates of every episode/song (the podcast now has almost 36,000 episodes/songs and the playlist now has over 24,000 episodes/songs), and iTunes is viery slow/sluggish (spinning beach ball).  Can you tell me how to eleminate all of the duplicates?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Copy the words "Starting standard backup" (without the quotes) on this page and paste into the String Matching text field. Note the timestamp of the last message shown. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • I have sent a file to the trash bin. When I come to empty the trash bin everything goes out except this one particular file and I get a note saying the file is 'in use' but it is not. How can I delete this file from trash?

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?

First just try logging out and back in.  Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.
You might also try Trash It!

  • The application "PREVIEW" can't locate files, cancels shutdown. How can I remove these files from PREVIEWS memory?

Does anyone know how I can stop this program from looking for files? Every time I restart PREVIEW gives two errors while it's searching for image files that are no longer there. FYI this is a lingering problem related to the replacement of my hard drive (under recall from apple), iphoto had to be totally rebuilt many times through technical support. Now there's just this program still trying to open phantom images.

If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

I have about 20 of these jpgs in there but when I drag them to the desktop and click to open, nothing happens. How can I empty my Trash folder?

There are several ways to do that.  I use a program called "Cocktail" on the infrequent occasions I have an item in the trash that will not empty.
