I can't restore my ipod?

everytime i open itunes i get this message "Itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. you must restore this ipod befored it can be used by itunes" everytime i tried to restore i always get an error...so how am i suppose to connect it? and i cant turn on my ipod cuz i think it ran out of battery but i can't do anything before i restored it..help plz.

Hey. I have basically the same problem. When I first got my ipod I plugged it into my computer and started syncing it with itunes...about halfway through everything froze...computer and ipod...and my ipod showed a white screen. After that I couldn't turn the ipod off or on. The only thing to do was reset with home+sleep button combo...which put it into recovery mode. When I tried to recover in itunes it gave me that error. Eventaully somehow I got it to recover, and after completely syncing and charging and using for a few minutes it froze and I had to go through the whole cylce again. I have now restored it 4 times...and it seems to work ok most of the time...but it keeps freezing. The only way to get it unfrozen is to do the reset button combo...which only makes it go into recover mode and it gets stuck that way. After pressing buttons for a while I can't get it to turn on again and it will work for a while until it freezes again. I dunno if I should get it replaced or what...only thing is the closest apple store is and hour and a half away...and I got my ipod engraved...and want to keep the engraving. what should I do?
oh...and one more thing...everytime it gets stuck in the recovery mode thing the screen turns black after a few minutes and the ipod starts to get very hot...

Right now you can't without a computer. Once you get to a computer you can restore it using DFU mode.

When I did a Google search on "1416 error ipod 5th," there is some discussion that the earlier version of the logic board only accepted 30 and 60 GB drives (or words to that effect), but the later "5.5" version did allow larger capacity drives. If that info is true, the question is, do you have a compatible combination of logic board and hard drive?

If you don't have a computer to which you have previously backed up using iTunes you will need to follow the instructions in the "Use recovery mode" section near the bottom of iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
