I can't save spell check

How do I save auto-spell check as I work on a document on Pages '09?
I have been attempting to save automated spell check on Pages '09.
I go to Inspector and click to English from None, but when I move the cursor to the document, it reverts to None.

The language setting in the More pane of the Text Inspector, like all Inspector settings, applies only to the Document in which it is set.
If Save that document as a Template, any new document made using that Template will open with the same language setting.

  • Alert! Can't find spell checker

After installing the latest security update, I am getting the "Spinning beach ball" in Mail.app and then the message:
    Alert! Can't find spell checker
Mail.app is unable to find its built-in spell checker (AppleSpell.service).
However, AppleSpell.service is where it should be, but it appears to be corrupt and won't start up to run in the background (as normal).
A workaround is to select "never" in the preferences of "Check Spelling" in Mail.app's preferences/Composing.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Can I get a non-corrupt version of the AppleSpell.service and try overwriting mine?

The "couldn't contact spell checker" error has been brought up in this forum many times (at least three times in the last two days). The error usually is the result of having remnants of older versions of third-party spell checkers, most commonly, Spell Catcher, but others have been identified. The solution is to remove those remnants and/or install the most recent version.

  • How can I enable spell checking for a text box that is just one line, e.g. subject in e-mail?

In a prior version of Firefox I found a website somewhere that told me what to do to enable spell checking for text boxes that are just one line. I got used to being able to send an e-mail with a Subject Line that didn't have a misspelling. Now it doesn't work. Please tell me how I can enable that again. I am on a Mac using Firefox 6.0.2. Thanks!

You can set the pref <b>layout.spellcheckDefault</b> to <i>2</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />

  • I can't get spell check to work

The instructions I've read continually talk about menu options I don't see. Then I found a link to download a dictionary and followed that hoping that might work, and when I tried to install that it said it wasn't compatible with 33.If I can't get Firefox to spellcheck I'm gooing to erase it immediately. I can't beleive I've already spent so much time on something so incidental, but unlivable without, in my world.

Spell check does not exist on Firefox for Android.
Most keyboards provide this functionality by suggesting words as you type. The value of checking the spelling of correctly typed words is low. In addition the dictionaries for all the languages Firefox supports would result in a larger app to download by several megabytes.
    </blockquote>
Sorry but I don't believe this is a valid answer. These days many small portable devices use Android and many are using tablets with physical Bluetooth keyboards. The functionality of predictive text that is provided with virtual keyboards is fine but that option is not available with physical keyboards. Usually there is already a dictionary installed in the system and that should be available but if it is not most users of Firefox would only want a dictionary in one or a limited number of languages and, just as in Firefox for other operating systems, it would only be necessary to download the languages needed.

  • "Can't contact Spell Checker".... in ANY program?

I've been getting the message "Can't or Couldn't contact Spell Checker" in both Neo Office and Text Edit, or any non-browser program that uses word processing. It used to happen some in Safari, but the latest version seems to have fixed the issue w/that browser. Please help, if you can. I really need spell checking! I haven't been using Pages recently, but this seems to apply to Text Edit, so I'm assuming it would apply to iWork should I do the new upgrade. It seems to be an "internal" problem that is affecting multiple software programs.
Thanks in advance for any help. Garth.

    thanks peggy, but...
Been there. Done that. I did check the Crash Log files, and I can tell you that the filepath has something to do with the Frameworks folder---maybe a corrupted file in there that was brought on by one of the recent apple updates. I don't have iWork yet. Text Edit spell check doesn't work at all. Since I've had no 3rd party spell check apps installed (that I can see anywhere), then I'm assuming that this problem originated with one of the Tiger updates. It seems as though all of the posts I've read say Tiger is the OS particularly affected. I don't want to Archive and Install if it just ends up repeating the same Kernel flaw when I re-download the software updates.
    thanks anyway,
    GArth.

  • Alert warning - Can't contact spell checker

Does any one else have this problem when using Pages? The alert notice comes up on the screen repeatedly and then causes Pages to freeze. It is most frustrating. I have reloaded iWorks, downloaded all the update but nothing seems to change. Help any one please.....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
This was a frequent topic when iWork '08 was first released. It is related to third-party spell checkers such as SpellCatcher. If they haven't been updated to the newest versions, this error comes up, especially when opening Word documents.
If you have SpellCatcher or another spell checker installed, I would just try disabling it first & see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, do a Spotlight search for "spell" & see what comes up. Trash anything that looks like it belongs to a third-party spell checker & restart your Mac.

  • In options, checking a new tab instead of the default a new window. After shutdown & restart FireFox returns to the w/no check mark. Can I save the check mark?

After a computer restart, Firefox always defaults in Options, Tabs, 'Open new windows on a new Tab' unchecked. After checking the box Firefox will then open new windows in a tab instead of a new window, However after a shutdown of the computer the check mark is gone and must be rechecked. Is there a way for Firefox to remember the check mark when the program is restarted?

hello gearjam, first of all it appears, that you're using an outdated version of firefox with various known security vulnerabilities - please [[Update Firefox to the latest version]] as soon as possible to stay safe while you browse the web.
regarding the problem you're observing, please make sure that no extension in firefox > addons > extension with the functionality to change tab settings is interfering here - or if this is not the case, go through the steps described in [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].

  • How can I Spell Check with an Action?

    Hi -
I can use the Spell Checking command while I'm recording a new Action but when I play that
Action it gets stuck on the first step... "Spell Check in contents of all text layer".  I didn't write that first step - PShop did while I was recording the Action.  Whe I try to use the Action I get an alert ... "The object "in contents of all text layer" is not currently available."
If I hit Stop - the Action stops.
If I hit Continue - the Action stops.
So how do I Spell check using an Action?  I plan to use this in a batch process. I have about 300 files and automating this would be great.
    TIA any insight,
    JL
    --Photoshop CS5, Win 7

See if using Insert Menu Item works for the spell check.

  • Can I customize the Spell Checker?

I am new to Pages coming from Office...
In Office, I can customize the Spell Checker to do many things. It will let me have it "auto-correct" any misspellings I commonly make... like if I type "dont" it will automatically change it to "don't".
Does the Mac let you customize the spell checker?

    Launch Pages.
Go to the Pages menu then:
    Preferences > Auto-correction
Check the Symbol and text substitution checkbox, then check any substitutions you want made and uncheck any you don't want Pages to do for you. You can add other errors you commonly make and their corrections using the + button below the list.
Auto - Correction is discussed on page 113 of the Pages '09 User Guide, a pdf document that you can download using the link in Pages's Help menu. Searchable, generally well written, and loaded with excellent information, it's highly recommended for anyone new to Pages.

  • Why doesn't Thunderbird underline misspelled words so that the spell checker can suggest alternatives?

I can't activate spell checker because there are no misspelled words underlined, when I know that there are.

To enable underlining of incorrectly spelt words as you type:
'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'Spelling' tab
    or
'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Composition' > 'Spelling' tab
select : 'Enable spell check as you type'
    click on OK
However, you do not have to have this enabled in order to use Spellcheck.
Click on 'Spelling' in the toolbar, it will open a small window offering potential spelling corrections for mispelt words.

  • Ihave firefox 3.6.8 spell check used to work on hotmail but I had to uninstall firefox and reload it now spell check does not work on hotmail . I have installed the dictionaryadd on

I can't gte spell check to work it just says
Most browsers check for spelling mistakes automatically. Look for the words that are flagged by red lines and right-click them to see suggestions. Note that with some browsers, you may need to download a dictionary.
    I have done this

Not all locales come with a dictionary installed for licensing reasons.<br />
If you do not have the en-US locale then check that you have a dictionary installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and selected.<br />
    <br />
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.<br />
Also make sure that [[X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.<br />
You can also try to toggle the "Check Spelling" item off and on again.<br />

  • System-wide Spell Checker Error

I newly installed Leopard on a MacBook Pro, and now in Mail, Safari and iTunes, I get a "Couldn't contact Spell Checker" error message when I try to type in these programs. The problem disappears in Mail if I set Spell Check to never in the preferences. Safari & iTunes don't have that option, that I could see.
But that's besides the point. Spell check should be seamless and automatic. The error doesn't just occur once. It basically hangs the program because the error cycles continuously and I have to force-quit to get out of the application.
So now I am using Firefox to type this because Safari wouldn't let me type without letting me know it can't contact spell checker.
To remedy the situation, I've verified and repaired permissions, although I did not see any permissions that related to this issue. I downloaded and re-installed the 10.5.1 update. No effect. I've spotlighted 'spell checker' and only gotten the .dll file from Windows as a return.
    Guesses, anyone?

etresoft, thanks for the hint. I looked and found tons of stuff, but not a thing to do with the spell checker error. I did log into another profile on the affected machine and had no trouble whatsoever. Does that mean the problem is in my home/library? I think, hopefully logically, that there's another program causing this issue. What would be the logical way to approach this?

  • InDesign cs6 spell check and master pages

I have created a set of master pages for a template in InDesign cs6. When I create a document from this template and apply "spelling", the spell check goes through every master page before moving to the document. How can I stop spell check from going to master pages unless, of course, the master page is highlighted? I have tried locking all master page objects and have also tried selecting the option of not allowing selection of master page locked objects. I have allowed, and disallowed, the override on master page items Nothing seems to work. I would like "spelling" to apply only the pages in the document, or only the selected page in the document.

If you go to Edit>Spelling>Check Spelling
You get a dialog box - the only options are for All Documents, Current Document, Story, To End of Story, or Selection
These are the options for checking spelling, ignore masters is not an option, unfortunately.
But you can select a range of text and use the Selection option to check the spelling.
    Hope that helps.
