When the Lacie drive is plugged into your computer, open System Preferences->Spotlight->Privacy to confirm that the drive is not in the privacy list.
If it is in the list, Spotlight won't index and search the drive.
If it is not in the list, consider adding it to the list (for example, by dragging its icon from the Desktop to the list), waiting 10 seconds, and then removing it from the list (click the minus(-) button). This will force OS X to re-index the drive and make it suitable for searching.

  • Can I use the same external hard drive for time machine and storing other files

I have a 640GB external hard drive that I have been using for over a year for time machine backups.  My mac hard drive is now starting to fill up and I am looking to move audio, video and picture files to my external hard drive.  How do I do this without messing up my time machine backups?  Can I do both on the same external hard drive?  Do I just make new folders on the external hard drive to move the files I want?  Thanks for the help.

If you move the files you will need to get another disk to back the files up to. You don't want to have only one copy of certain files (personal, professional etc.).

  • IMac can't find my attached external hard drive for Time Machine.  Any ideas?

I have a Seagate for Mac external hard drive I have been using for my Time Machine backups.  Last week it was no longer backing up.  I unplugged it, reattached but Time Machine doesn't seem to be able to find it.

Sounds like the external disk drive has died.
If you have access to another computer, try testing it there. If not, you might be able to get the Apple Store to test it for you.

  • My changes to an external hard drive's files and folders vanished.

Something crazy happened with a Mac-formatted external hard drive I've been working with. Today, out of nowhere, it reverted to a state where tons of organizational work I have done on the folder contents vanished. Files I deleted were restored, files I renamed were back to their old names, and an entire folder of stuff I rendered is missing. This work dates back for weeks. However, photo keywords that I added yesterday are still there. The only thing I can think of is that something weird happened with Time Machine. I briefly connected the hard drive to an iMac yesterday, and loaded up time machine to look at the backups. However, the problem hard drive is not the one that Time Machine backs up to, and I definitely didn't restore any previous backups. I have no idea how this happened.

Where is your Library? On the iMac? On the External? What version of iPhoto do you have?

  • I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

  • Can someone suggest an affordable external hard drive for use with FCPX and video editing on my Macbook Pro Retina

I have a Macbook Pro Retina from 2012 and I only got the 250GB hard drive.  I'm getting ready to purchase a Panosonic HC-X920 to use with Final Cut Pro X already installed on my laptop.  Since I know the file sizes are going to be so big, can anyone suggest an affordable external drive fast enough to keep up with editing the video?  I'm not a pro and use it for family and personal projects.
I prefer some thunderbolt options since I haven't had a chance to use the inputs since I got my macbook pro. I just don't know what is necessarily too little or too big and too cheap and too expensive for my needs.  Thank you.

OWC is a Mac specialist and a very trustworthy vendor.  I have dealt with them and their technical stall on many occasions.  Hence you may look at what they offer and be assured that they will stand behind what they sell:

I suspect that for your needs, a 1 TB drive is going to be the minimum.

  • Can you use the same external hard drive for Time Machine backups and as an additional storage drive?

I have an external HD that I've been using exclusively for Time Machine backups. I need to clear space on my hard drive, so I was thinking to move music & photos to an external drive.  Wondering if I can use the same one I have (which I'll aslo keep using for Time Machine) or if I need to get another drive.

    Hi Jossydtaylor,
Time Machine can use either an entire external disk or a partition of that disk:
OS X Mountain Lion: Disks you can use with Time Machine
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11171
You can use Time Machine with a Time Capsule, and with USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt disks. The backup disk can be directly connected to your computer or be on a network. If the backup disk has been divided into partitions, you can use one of the partitions.
If the disk is partitioned using the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition type, some partitions may not be available for use with Time Machine. The GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition type is recommended.
For more info on partitioning, see this article:

  • Formatting LaCie External Hard Drive for MAC and PC

    Hi,
I just recently purchased a LaCie 500 GB Hard Drive from the Apple Store in order to back up and store most of my PC (Window) files. Most of my files that I need to back up are on CD, DVD, and USB mini drives. I was thinking of transferring the files through my MacBook Pro but I'm not sure how to partition the hard drive, since most of my files are generated from PC's and I would need to connect the hard drive to a PC in the future anyway.
From what I understand, the files that I save in the Windows partition will only be recognized when on a PC, and the same for the MAC. But what about simple compatible files that are read cross platform, such as Word documents? Would I still only be able to access each file depending on the platform and the partition?
Is there a way that I can just partition it into a single storage space – as how servers store data, regardless of whether it’s a PC or MAC file? I’m also wondering what would happen if I were to plug it into my laptop first? If it doesn’t ask me to partition the drive on my PC, will it ask me when I plug it back into the MAC afterwards? And if I partition it then, what would happen to my data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

    Hi, njoay
I just moved to Mac from Windows last week onto a new MBP. I purchased a Lacie 500GB ruggedized drive. Here is what I know and tried:
    1) If you format the Lacie in Mac format, then you can't use it on a Windows machine without software eg MacDrive.
    2) If you format the Lacie in NTFS, you can only read from it when connected to Mac without other software.
I work a lot with VMWare, so I need the LACIE to be able to connect to both PC and MAC. I found a solution from another MAC user: "Paragon NTFS for Mac OS" (see http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/) which you can purchase for US$39.
    This is what I did:
    1) connect my Lacie to my PC and formatted it in NTFS format.
    2) Installed Paragon NTFS onto my MAC
    3) Connected LACIE to Mac.
    Here are the results:
    1) Connection with USB2.0 from Lacie to Mac - it works (can read and write to LAcie formatted in NTFS)
    2) Connection with Firewire 800 from Lacie to Mac - it does NOT work. The disk gets ejected. I have logged a support call with Paragon on this issue and am waiting a reply.
    3) Connection with Firewire 400 from Lacie to Mac - have not tried it yet.
    Hope the above helps.

  • Can anyone suggest the best external hard drive for MAC PRO?

As my tower is whirring like the proverbial jet, I was told at the Genius Bar to back everything up before trouble-shooting. I've researched various 500 GB ext. hard drives, but they all seem to have drawbacks. My biggest priority is reliability. Any ideas? Thanks.

You will find suitable products at MacSales.com or you can purchase a hard drive separately and install it in an external Firewire enclosure. You will find enclosures at:
    MacSales.com
    CoolDrives.com
    FirewireDirect.com
    NewEgg.com
In the future please choose the proper forum for your topic. You posted this question in the MacBook Pro forum instead of the Mac Pro forum.

  • Can I use one 2tb external hard drive for time capsule and file storage?

I would like to use time capsule, but also keep the hard drive on my desktop for file storage. Can I do this?

    Apple advises against doing that.
Any data stored on the disk that Time Machine is backing up to can not be backed up.
Plus the data outside of the Time Machine backup database cause problems when Time Machine starts cleaned up old backups to recover space for new backups.
For these reason it is advised that the Time Capsule disk be used for one or the other but not both.

  • Lacie external hard drive for Time Machine

    Hi all,
    just wondered;
I'm using a LACIE external porsche design, as my designated Time Machine.
some of the forums suggest that Lacie are not very good ?
Does anyone have any comments on this, as Time Machine is backing up important data, I dont want to run the risk on a sub standard drive?
    Thank you.

I do think the power issue has been fixed- a couple of years ago we purchased both 500gb and 1tb drives, which had almost identical looking power supplies, identical plugs, etc. However, we found out that the 500gb power supplies would not fully power the 1tb drives.
We did have a power supply go bad as well, this happened just a bit after the 1yr warranty expired, but they were cool and sent us a new power supply right away, free of charge.
The drives we bought this year all have identical power supplies, so it seems this issue has been fixed.

  • Mavericks won't recognize my lacie external hard drive

I've been using a LaCie external hard drive for my Time Machine backups and it's been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. Mavericks no longer recognizes the drive. I tested the drive out on a non-Mavericks Macbook and it booted up fine. I see there are issues with this, but wondering if anyone has a work around or if you've found there is a fix I can do? Really frustrating to not be able to access my archives or be able to back up my work!

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups.  My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full.  I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well.  Should I
    1.  create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility?  *I am running Snow Leopard*
    2.  create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
    3.  leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs.  Please advise the best path to take.  Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

  • My Lacie external hard drive has a life of its own

    Hi,
I've had my Lacie External hard drive for about 4 months and i have a recurring problem, it wont always show up in finder or on the desktop.
It shows up in disk utilities just fine, but stupidly the first time this happened i didn't know that you could right click and "open" it from disk utils, so i panicked and reformatted the hard disk, obviously losing everything inside.
Since then i have learnt from my mistakes and now when it vanishes (when i start up the computer it just randomly doesn't appear...) i just open via disk utils. But this isn't fair! It should appear EVERY time its switched on and plugged in. Thats what i paid for.
I issued a ticket with Lacie but with lots of trial and error they were able to tell me that is was more likely my imac and not the external hard drive. I am crossing my fingers hoping for help here!
Thank you for any help/advice in advance! Charlie

  • The best external hard drives for macs

Can anyone recommend a good external hard drive for a mac computer; preferably the IMac OS 10.5.6 desktop. Thanks!

Personal Experience with the One Touch Series:
Keep a VERY CLOSE EYE on that Maxtor One Touch!
I had two of the 1TB Firewire 800 models at one point. Hard drives failed on one of them within a month. Warranty replaced the unit but not the data. After a year, the tiny fans died and the drives overheated, resulting in total loss of both enclosures and all the data on them (within a week of each other).
Those things are not meant for continuous use. If you only use them for periodic backup purposes, and then shut them off, they may be fine.
Maxtor's setup software for the Mac was a PITA, too. The version included on the disc was worthless. Disk label indicated one version, actual version on the disc was an older, incompatible version. Maxtor sent a replacement disc. It was the same disc with the same problem. Finally located the correct installer on their website. That was a few years ago.
I'll never touch the touch series again as a result.
On the other hand, I've had a SmartDisk FireLite 60 GB (FireWire model) for my Powerbook for 5 years now with excellent performance. I have no problem recommending SmartDisk drives.
