I can't see my external hard drive connected to my TC

I can't see my external hard drive connected to my TC, I have connected to the USB port on my TC but cannot see it , any ideas

Hello Bob,
I have a powered hub plugged into my Time Capsule.
Into the powered hub I have a printer; printer works fine.
Into the powered hub I have an ExFAT formatted disk.
The ExFAT disk is seen in the AirPort Utility as an "AirPort Disk".
I cannot see the ExFAT disk in Finder or in Window's "My Computer".
When I plug the ExFAT drive directly into Mac or Windows computers the drive is seen in Finder and My Computer.
When the ExFAT drive is plugged directly into Mac or Windows both can read and write files.
Do you think that I need to format the USB ExFAT drive as FAT 32?
I have heard mention "need to map the drive". Do you think this would help?
Thank you for your time.
Rob

  • I can't see my external hard drive on the network.

I can't see my external hard drive on the network. I have a WRT160NL router with USB. I plugged the drive in the USB and set up a share in the router config.

Did you map the drive? It won't show up in Explorer automatically like a jump drive or an external drive plugged directly into the PC will.
You didn't mention the OS you're running, but what you want to do is choose "Map a network drive" and you'll see the router listed as a network device. Click on it and you should see the external drive listed. You can map it from there.

  • Time Machine can't see my external hard drive

Time Machine won't show me any backup disk options other than  "Set up Time Capsule".  When I click on that, it searches for AirPort wireless which I do not have installed.  How do I get Time Machine to see my external hard drive connected via Fire Wire?  I went into Disk Utility and it showed the external drive was there.  Backups had been working previously.

I don't know the answer but I have the same thing happen. I have two external drives I use for backup. Sometimes it can see one and sometimes another. Then sometimes it can't see either one.  I will take one out for a while then plug it back in and then it may see it.  Maybe it's a cable issue or something but I will be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable says.

  • Migration Assistant can't see my external hard drive.

Migration Assistant can't see my external hard drive with my back-up info on it. I need to migrate my user data from an older back-up ( OS X 10.4.11) to a recently installed OS X 10.5.8 system on a Mac Pro.  The external drive is not bootable.  Any ideas?

    Great news, thanks!
    On iTunes see this...

  • Why can I see my external hard drive?

For 2 years or more I've had an external hrad drive to back up my Imac. One day I got a message that there had not beeb a back up for for a really long time  ( I have it on automatic).
Ever since, I have not been able to see the external hard drive on mi Imac and have not been able to do regular back ups.
First I turned off, on, restart computer and tried to see if it showed up on another computer, which it did.
What could the problem be?  It was working just fine.
    Please help
    Thanks

EHD's can crash. First thing I'd recommend though is to do 2-3 SMC resets. Shut down the computer, then remove the power cord from both the wall plug and back of the computer, wait 15-20 seconds and restart normally and test.
If that fails use another cable to connect the drive, if that fails open Disk Utility and see if the EHD can be seen. If that fails then replace the drive. I would STRONGLY recommend 2 backups, use Time Machine on disk 1 and then use a create a clone using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner on the other drive. When it comes to backing up, redundancy is smart. Would you trust your bank if  they only had one form of backup of all your money??

I download all pictures and videos that I had in the windows pc  in the new hdd.  I am trying to see and watch  those files on my iPad . I am thinking that since the files are jpeg and mpeg the iPad should read it.
    Am I wrong?
    Yes, you are wrong.
You need to add the files to iTunes on your computer, then sync the iPad with iTunes.

  • Finder can't see my external hard drive

Disk Utility can see external hard drive, but finder not.
Also i cannot mount the external hard drive.
I tried to repair, i can see how many files are there, it was working normally before.
Also when on other computer with windows it's working. In windows I can access all the files normally.
When I bought it first I format this in my mac with fat and then i was using normally long time since now.
    This is from disk utility:

File system check exit code is 0.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

So I got this in terminal

  • IMac can't see my external hard drive

I plug in a Toshiba 500 Gb External Hard drive and it doesn't show up on the desktop, in the finder window or in Disk Utility. It shows up in all those places on my work iMac and my son's laptop. Any ideas why my computer doesn't recognize it? Thanks for any help.

USB3 is downward compatible with USB2.
Flash drives show up when plugged into the USB ports of which there are four. The power indicator light on the drive is on and I can feel the drive spinning.Tried doing a smc reset and it didn't help.
As an experiment disconnect all those other usb connections.

  • How can I backup an external hard drive connected to my mac with time capsule?

The hard drive on my IMac is 500GBytes.  It is just about full.  I have purchased an additional drive to attach to it permanently through the Firewire 800 interface.  My plan is to move my photographs and iTunes to the attached drive.  I currently use 2TB time capsule to backup my hard drive. Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?
    Thanks,

Can I get time capsule to back up the external hard drive as well?
I assume that you are asking about Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule here, correct?
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Here, you will see list of items that are excluded from backups. By default, the hard drive attached to your Mac will appear here.
Click on the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button to remove the drive from the list of items that are excluded from backups
Now, the drive will be backed up along with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes, and any changes that you make to the hard drive will be backed up as well in the future.

  • I can not see my external hard drive that is hooked to my airport extreme

I have hooked my iOmega 1tb hard drive to my airport extreme but can not see it on my macbook pro. need help to set this up

This is unsupported by Apple. You must configure Airport Utility to turn enable File Sharing of the drive in Sharing preferences and in the AEBS configuration. Then you have to "mount" the drive on your Desktop by selecting Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu.

  • Can't see my external hard drive?

I just bought a Western Digital hard drive for back up purposes for my imac (intel based).
I plugged it in. It whirrs, it purrs but that's it.
I put in the install disk. Well, there's no auto installation file or anything like that I can find. Maybe it was intended for PC (but I know it's compatible with intel macs.. packaging says so)
I open the disk utility. It doesn't appear as a drive.
I open the Super Duper dialogue box (I downloaded Super Duper to help me manage the auto scheduling of the back up process). It also does not recognize the drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Jay.

I got this same drive. It arrived formatted as MS-DOS and mounted on the desktop as an orange icon no problem, anyway. Later on, when copying files to it, the Finder has really bad crashes, so bad that it will not relaunch. The whole OS X is completely dead and needs a cold power down and reboot. I've never seen that. Afterwards, the drive will never mount or be recognised in Disk Utility. If I connected that drive to a PC, it will mount fine and the files can be read. It needed a PC to save the drive; I had to go to friends' houses.
Bringing it home to the Mac, it will then mount OK! But then the clock counts down. At some time whatever I did, at some point the Finder will go insane again. The drive disappears, and will need PC help.
I hope it's a hardware fault. Western Digital are sending another drive...

  • Can't save to external hard drive connected to Airport Ex from networked pc

    Hi,
I have always been able to access the files on my external harddrive that's connected to my Airport Extreme from my wirelessly networked laptop pc and make changes, deletions, save files, etc.
Sometime in the past couple of weeks, it changed. I still can get to my files on the ext drive and open them, but I cannot save a file that I edited. For example, if I'm on my pc laptop and I'm in Photoshop, I can still get to the files on the external drive that's connected to my Airport Extreme, but once I make my changes to the graphic and hit save, I cannot save the file to the external drive. As a matter of fact, I've now discovered that I can open files, but not save them, change the file name, etc. on the external drive. I have always been able to. My connections, hardware, etc have not changed.
When I connect to the external drive from my laptop pc, I connect with my mac user name and password. I am an administrator. Thoughts?

    Hello,
Try running Disk Utility and Repairing Disk Permissions...
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Can i share my external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme across a web connection?

I have a USB drive attached to my base station, and wanted to access the drive remotely. My ADSL connection comes through a Router, and is then delivered to the Airport Base Station.
It's probably simple with the right boxes, and instructions. I'm not sure about either tho'
I'm really only looking for a rough guide, and if it's even possible.
    Any help would be great.
    Ta.

You might give Screen Sharing a try or Back To My Mac. VPN is also an alternative.
