  • Boot Camp with Win 8 Can't See The USB External Drive [MBR with NTFS, Fat32, HFS Partitions]

Hi. When I boot to Boot Camp with the latest Apple Windows Support drivers can't see my USB Flash Drive, DVD and OS X volumes but not my USB external drive that has an MBR partition scheme (using iPartition from GUID) and in there it has different volumes [HFS when I boot to Snow Leopard, Fat32, NTFS]. What can I do with Boot Camp to make it see my USB external drive and why isn't it seeing the USB when it can see the USB flash drive both use USB?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

i can't see my usb devices on my desktop. i tried to restart and re-plag but it doesn't show up. help?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's normal. You have to set up Finder to show external drives on Desktop.
To do this, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and mark "External disks"

  • [SCHROOT] Can't see my USB hard drive

    Hi
I use an schroot environment to run 32 bit applications on my arch64 system.
All runs well, but I have a problem I don't know how to solve myself.
I can't see my USB harddrives from inside the chroot system, so , for example 32 bit browsers can't save files on my USB hd.
I tried to mount with the "--bind" option the HD :
    sudo mount --bind /media/HD /opt/arch32/media/HD
Reading the HD with "ls /opt/arch32/media/HD" works outside the chroot, but then when I try to read the HD with "ls /media/HD" from inside the chroot I get a "PERMISSION DENIED" error.
I don't know what to do. How am I supposed to see my USB hds from inside the chroot system?
    Thanks

  • How can I see my USB device in the measurement&automation explorer?

I'm trying to use an USB-device with LabView7.0.
I followed the manual "using NI-VISA3.0 to control your USB device" which I found on the NI-webpage.
I generated an .inf file using the VISA driver developement wizard and installed it in the INV folder of my system (I'm using Win2000).
The following problems occured: after I connect my USB device the "add new hardware wizard" pops up and aks for a driver for the new hardware. when I direct it to the folder with the generated .inf file it doesn't accept this file as a driver.
second: the USB device doesn't appear in the measurement&automation explorer. I assume that as long as my device doen't appear there it is not recognized by NI-VISA and the comm
    unication from LV wouldn't work?
How can a make my USB device visible in the meas.&aut. explorer?
    Regards
    Tobias

    Tobias,
In the VISA Driver Development Wizard, you are required to specify the Vendor and Product ID. These numbers are what Windows will use to determine whether a specific driver is appropriate for a given device. If these numbers do not match between your device and the Windows driver (INF file) that you generate, you will see the behavior that you describe. Check to make sure that you are using the appropriate values. Also, did you right click on the INF file and install it as directed in step 2.2.2?
Page 5-87 of the VISA Programmer's reference manual specifies how to do a viOpen to a USB device in RAW mode, but you still need the same sorts of Product ID and Mfg ID that you needed for the INF file generation. Furthermore, if you are communicating with
your instrument directly, you will need to know exactly what command set it expects, so make sure you get that from the manufacturer as well. Finally, I want to mention that if this device complies with the USBTMC standard, then none of this is necessary--the steps above are for setting up a RAW USB connection. See this link for information.

  • I can't see my usb camera (Kodak CX7220)

    Hi,
The package libgphoto2 (2.1.4-2) does not contain my camera. So, I had to compile the new version (2.1.5) myself. After installed it, I dont know if I have to do something else, but when I run gthumb or gtkam, I still can't see my camera on the list!
Anyone knows what I have to do?
    Thanks!

    Hi murpheus40.
First check out the following very recent article about cameras under LInux:
"Use Your Digital Camera with Linux"
    http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/lin … gicam.html
    Now for a few tips:
    1. Check that the USB camera is recognized after it's been plugged in. You can check the devices file:
    cat  /proc/bus/usb/devices
or you can run usbview (an Arch Linux package).
    2. Even if you can't get gthumb or gtkam to work right now, you can download the files directly using gphot2. This is nicely described in the article referenced above.
    3. You might find that your camera is not well supported by ghoto2. For one of my cameras this meant that the USB connection was lost and it was necessary to replug the camera in to work with additional commands (e.g., doing a complete file list dropped the connection after the listing was complete).
    4. Your camera IS supported by gphoto2. See:
    http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php
    5. The previous tips may not have gotten you to your goal. There's a lot of good information about setting up USB cameras under LInux using gphoto2 at:
"Digital Camera Support for UNIX, Linux and BSD"
    http://www.teaser.fr/~hfiguiere/linux/digicam.html
"Configuring a USB digital still camera on Debian"
    http://jace.seacrow.com/tech/linux/usbcam
"How do I get my USB digital camera to work under Linux?"

  • Can't see my usb hd in the airport utility

I just got an Airport express that is working great, but I can't hook a USB HD to it. I reformatted the drive and made sure that it is recognized when I plug it into my computer, but when I plug it into the USB port on the Airport and run the Airport Utility nothing shows up in the "Disks" menu. Anything I'm missing? I have cycled the power on the Airport without any success.

Is this a bus-powered drive or does it have its own power supply brick?
If bus-powered, a powered USB hub is needed.

  • Can't see my USB icon on my desktop so I can disconnect it

I have a new iMAC Lion 10.7.2.  I had a flashdrive in a USB port a few days ago and removed it without dumping the icon first.  Now, I can't find the icon on the desktop in order to remove it safely.  (I have a mouse drive in another port and there is no icon for that, either.)

What usually works well is to plug the flash drive back in. With luck it will appear on the desktop, and be accessible. That is when you should unmount the drive properly. To unmount the drive, do one of the following -
    • Select the drive by clicking its icon once, then press Command-E (Eject in the File menu).
    • Right-click or Control-click the icon for the drive, and select Eject from the contextual menu that appears.
    • Drag the icon to the Trash. The Trash icon will change to an eject symbol when you're partway there - keep dragging it all the way to the Trash, drop it into that symbol.
Once the drive has been unmounted you can safely unplug it.

  • Can't see TimeCapsule from Laptop, only desktop!?

Hy, I would realy appreciate some help with my problem!
After updating the airpot software and the firmware software, I'm unable to see the Time Capsule HD from my laptop. I had the same problem with my desktop, and after installing the old version of airpot and firmware software I started to see the HD Time Capsule again. I tried to install the same version of the airport(5.3.2) in my laptop, but I still can't see the time capsule hd from my laptop, only from desktop. I'm using the 7.3.2 firmware in my capsule. I lost the entire day uninstalling and installing all the possible version of software and I could only make my desktop work with airport 5.3.2 and firmware 7.3.2, but the same combination in the laptop is not allowing me to see the HD of the time capsule. I've already tried wireless and cable for installing and truing to locate the HD. I can not find this steps in my computer " In Finder go to preferences and check connected servers to show on desktop" . Can you please help me? Thanks a lot for you time and attention!

Hello Placido and welcome to the discussions!
"I can not find this steps in my computer In Finder go to preferences and check connected servers to show on desktop"
    Here are the steps:
Click on the Finder icon on the dock at the bottom of the screen. The Finder icon is usually on the far left of the dock unless you have moved it. Or, just click the desktop in a blank area.
Now at the top of the screen, you will see the Apple icon and Finder-File-Edit-View-Go-Window-Help. Click on Finder and then click on Preferences.
Click on General. Look for the words "Show these items on the Desktop"
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Connected servers".
    That is it.

  • Can't see hard drive icon on desktop

Just got my daughter a new MA 13" 2011...installing some software via the external superdrive when I realized that I can't see the HD icon on the desktop...am I missing something to make it visible? Other than that if functions properly...I can "see" it when installing software as it lets me choose it as an install destination....
    Thanks,
    Daryl

Activate the Finder, select Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General icon in the toolbar, check the boxes for what you want displayed on the Desktop. You can do the same thing for the sidebar by clicking on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar.

  • I can not see my whole screen on desktop it gets cut off

I can not see my whole desktop screen and I have to scroll to get to buttons such as file. Help

This normally happens when you accidently hit the Control key while scrolling.   Hold the control key down and scroll with your mouse or trackpad.  One direction will zoom and the other will unzoom.

Do you see anything on the TV?
If you just see your desktop, then your MacBook is defaulting to extended display mode. Try pressing the Command + F1 keys to see if you get the menu bar and other icons.

  • Migration Assistant can't see my USB ext HD for Time Machine!

Here is a question for Pondini!
I've read through many of the threads here, including Pondini's tutorials on how to set-up Time Machine, use Migration Assistant, etc. Alas, I'm not a technical person and have hit a wall.
    Here's the scenario:
Last week my iMac running Mountain Lion crashed. The hard drive was initially "repaired" using Recovery, erasing all data then restoring the drive from Time Machine backups stored on a Hitachi 2TB Touro USB3 external HD. But soon after the system froze again and a 2nd restore did not work. I concluded that my almost 5 year old HD was gone.
Where I stand now is that the iMac's HD has been replaced with a new one which came preinstalled with Snow Leopard. I absolutely want (need!) to restored my Mac from Time Machine to get back all my settings and info.
During the iMac first boot Setup Assistant did NOT see the external hard drive even though they are connected properly. (Note: My older iMac is undoubtedly USB2 but the external HD is backwards-compatible USB3. THAT is the connection, from the external HD directly into the back of the Mac. It is mounted on my desktop and files can be accessed through Finder.) So I then proceeded to set-up my "new" computer with basic settings, which is how I came to see my external HD was properly mounted and connected. I also upgraded the OS on this new HD to Mountain Lion so it would be the same as my most recent Time Machine back-ups.
Since then I have tried using Migration Assistant to migrate from Time Machine on my external drive but it still does not recognize any drives - Migration Assistant just searches endlessly for other computers. Argh! I've tried all the tips I've read in these forums and none have helped. I scanned my external drive for errors using disk utility but none were found.
On my external drive there is a folder in the root called Backups.backupdb. Double-clicking it simply opens the folder in Finder, to reveal folders with names familiar to me - the previous HDs computer name, then a bunch of dated folders within that, including a lone file called 2012-08-17-062839.inProgress. I suppose my HD may have died while backing up to Time Machine.
    WHAT do I do?
Let's say the worst case scenario is that I cannot use these Time Machine backups. Is there any way to root through them for data I can hand-copy to my iMac's new internal drive? It would be grueling but at least it's something. How can I retrieve years of email? Luckily photos, music, videos, etc were backed up manually into a separate folder (also in the root of my external drive).
    THANK YOU!!
    Danielle

This happened to me after hard drive replacement under the Seagate Drive Recall at the local Apple Store. Here's what I learned from the process:
I Wagged the Mac home, fired it up (with naked OS installed at the Apple Store), and it wouldn't see my Time Machine drive with Setup Assistant - not on firewire 800 nor USB. Just a grey spinner that lasts forever. When I try just continuing anyway, it offers me something that looks plausible, but then puts up a dialog about duplicate user name, and no matter what I enter, it always says "that user already exists". So I think - maybe Migration Assistant. Complete the setup, create an account, watch the nice welcome movie. BAM - there's my Time Machine drive on the desktop. OK - it has to work . . . but no. Same behavior in Migration Assistant, plus the new OS offers to start making backups on my Time Machine disk - it's not recognizing it at all.
So - back to the Apple Store - let the genius figure it out. It turns out there are multiple problems. First, the "genius" who imaged my new machine picked 10.7.2 but my machine had 10.7.5 - turns out, it's not enough just to have right cat. Even a point release older OS may not recognize a newer Time Machine drive. The guy at the desk said "We have images of everything but the 10.7.2 has free iLife in it, so they like to use that one". What the heck? They don't image what you had originally as a matter of sane process?
Having figured that out, we re-image 10.7.5 at the store thinking we've fixed it. But no - Setup Assistant still won't see the Time Machine drive. Not on USB, not on Firewire. Not in a box, not with a fox.
So here's the second trick - newer machines have a recovery partion. see: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/  Boot with the option key held down, pick that partition, then you'll get a "system restore" option, to restore your whole system from a Time Machine backup. My drive was recognized by the recovery partition restore process when neither Setup nor Migration Assistant would. Obviously, there's something broken in Setup/Migration Assistant.
    Takeaway:
    - if you're getting a drive replaced by Apple, make sure they image *exactly* the same OS you had
    - if Setup Assistant fails, use the recovery partition for system restore
    - Use Recovery Disk Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 to make yourself a recovery thumb drive just in case. With Apple's new "no media" approach to the OS, you're hosed without it.

  • Can't see my USB drive icon

I have a small USB Flash drive that has always been formatted in FAT (16). This drive works fine on my iMac G5 with OSX 10.4.8. However, when I take the drive home to my iMac (Intel) also running the latest OS X version, I cannot get the icon to appear in the sidebar or on the desktop. The drive is mounted and usable because I can open it via Spotlight, and I see it in Disk Utility. I used to see the icon, then it just stopped being seen. It may have been after one of the automatic software updates to the OS, but I cannot be sure.
So any ideas as to why the drive icon is visible on G5 but not Intel iMac?

  • Can't see shared usb printer

    Hi All
Thanks in advance, have searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer.
I work in a small office using the following 3 Mac's all on a wired network
    1. PowerPC G5 - OS 10.4.11
    2. Intel G5 - OS 10.4.11
    3. G4 - OS 10.4.11
We have an Epson R340 connected via usb into mac number 1, it's all shared and mac number 3, the G4, see's it and can print to it no problem. However the Intel G5 just will not see it in the 'add printers' area.
If I plug the printer into the G4, mac 1 can see and use it but still not the Intel G5.
If I plug the printer into the Intel G5, neither of the other 2 mac's see it.
I can network the Epson printer and all 3 mac's can see and use it, but the colour is very poor, all colours look very 'washed out' and the quality is unacceptable.
Hope you can help as we have had this problem for months now and I'm pulling my hair out on this one and I havn't got that much left to pull out anyway

Hi Steve, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    OOPs, no Intel G5s! G5s are IBM/PPC.
    On the G5...

Might try Printer Setup Repair 5.1...
