I can't see other Macs on my network.

I cannot see other Macs running OS X 10.7 (Lion) on my network in the sidebar of the finder. When I had Snow Leopard my friend could see me but I could not see him. I have tried enabling file sharing, but still nothing, and this was not enabled on Snow Leopard anyway. This is really confusing me.
Thank you.

There's a strange Finder bug that is causing things to go invisible, usually it is drives, but occasionally it happens to folders (one guy had his applications folder become invisible). Take a look at this article I wrote on the problem:

  • Can't see other Macs/PCs on the network...

Since installing the Safari 6/Apple Remote Desktop Update I can't see other Macs/PCs on the network. If I restart I can see 2 Macs, but after a while they disappear, and I can see/connect to nothing...

If you are using DHCP check that it is getting the correct addressing. In the event that it is but still not working then test by giving it a fixed IP and see if it then works.

  • New Mac OS Server on network, Windows box can't see other Macs anymore

I just put a Mac mini server on my network and the only services I have enabled are SMB, AFP and Open Directory. Before I put the server on the network (and if I turn the server off) the Windows 7 Pro machine I have on the network used to be able to see the rest of the Macs on the network in the Network section... I could see them, log on to one, grab files, etc. This also went for the Macs seeing the PC on the network in the Finder. Now that I have the server on the network though, I can't see the PC on my Macs and can't see my Macs on the PC. I can, however, do a "Map network drive" on the PC and enter an address to one of the Macs and connect that way. Anyone know why this could be happening?
Like I said, if I turn the server off or disconnect it from the network, the Macs will see the PC and the PC will see the Macs, but once its back on the network, they stop seeing each other, so its definitely something the server is doing that's causing it.
    TIA

Confirm you have unique addresses and unique host names for the IP host names on your network. In absolute specifics, make absolutely certain your Mac OS X Server box is not configured at a conflicting address, or with a host name that conflicts with the Windows 7 box or with some other central and critical network resource such as your firewall or an IP router.
It's also possible you've got (for instance) a bad cable or a bad NIC and that's jamming up your network, though that's less likely.
Your Mac OS X Server box requires DNS be configured locally, or within your network.
Confirm unique host names. Confirm unique IP addresses. You can launch Terminal.app and use the dig command at the bash shell (+dig -x 192.168.1.1+ with whatever the local address, and +ping 192.168.1.1+ again with the local address and not with the 192.168.1.1 value shown, and +dig hostname.example.com+ or such for your domain name) or (if you're not comfortable in bash -- do go learn bash, regardless) then you can use the Network Utility in the Applications > Utilities folder.
It's also possible there's a problem with the managed switch configuration or such, but that probably isn't in use here.

  • Why can' I see other Mac in Shared area of Finder

    MBP with Snow Leopard
    MP with Leopard
    iMac with Leopard
The MBP shows the iMac and MP in the Shared area of the finder.
The MP show the iMac but not the MBP.
However, I can connect to the MBP by entering its IP address via Finder Connect to Server.
The MBP does show up in the MP's finder sometimes but I can't seem to figure out when or why. This is driving me nuts. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
The MBP can see the MP in the Finder under S

My suggestions for getting shares to show up under shared in finder fit here.
Both machines have no problem seeing a third machine that sleeps a couple of times per day.
    Can they connect to it?
Thanks for the ideas but it doesn't look like we have a solution yet.
You are very welcome. Post back if you think my inserts above are pertinent to your problem.

  • I can't see others machines in my network

    Hi
I have this problem: I have a network (with the same range of ip in computers, the same mask, etc). In this network, the wired devices can discover and see others devices in "network places" or "network map". But, when I connect
with my laptop (windows 7 pro) I can't. I can't see in network places, but if I write in explorer bar "\\IP-otherMachine" I can see his shared folders. I connect with my laptop with wireless wpa2-enterprise (aes & peap). Obiusly I have checked
"discover other devices..." in home group options. Can anybody help me?
PS: Sorry for my English :(

I mean that I always can to access shared files and folder's other machines in my network. The problem is:
If I want a file of my other computer named "Example", I must to write in Explorer "\\IP-for-example-machine" (172.17.10.111 for example). But, if I click in "Network" in any Explorer folder or "Start button,
    click Control Panel,
    click Network and Internet,
and then click Network and Sharing Center.
In the upper-right corner, click View full map. "
in "Network and Sharing Center" options in Control Panel, I can't see any PC.
If I write "\\Example" in Explorer I can't see shared folders of Example machine, but if I write the IP I can.
All of this in Wireless. In wired, all is normal.
And these option that you said, I have checked, the problem still.

  • New Macbook Pro Can't See Other Macs

My Powerbook and iMac can see each other over the network and do file transfers, but my new Macbook Pro can't. The other computers show up in Bonjour Browser, but when I try to connect to them (either via their computer name, e.g. my-computer.local, or by ip) it can't. It tells me the address is wrong. It can't even ping them, and they can't ping it. It's weird because I can access both the internet and the router settings.

After I did that Airport stopped working. The menubar icon said "Airport not configured" and there were no network interfaces in System Preferences. So I tried just putting the airport prefs back, and restarting. The same thing happened, so I had to put the whole folder back where it was.

  • Can't see other sharing computers in network

I have this issue with a Macbook Air running Mountain Lion, that it can't show any other sharing computers in the network except another Macbook when using wireless network. I have the following setting:
    Firewall is off
    SMB file sharing is on
Workgroup is set to WORKGROUP in WINS tab
Location has been saved rather than Automatic
Other computers (that are sharing) can be connected using the tool opened using Cmd+K
Seems to be able to see the other computers some times when connecting using Ethernet
I have relaunched Finder and restarted the laptop, nothing is making the sharing computers show up.
The problem occurs to this laptop only. My laptop, a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, have no problem finding these computers in the same wireless setup.

I figured it out awhile back. There was a glitch and when I upgraded to the next version (From when I posted this message), my other hard drive reappeared in the network.

  • Can't see others in iChat over Fiber Optic connection

This was a strange, recent occurence. For the past few years, those of us on Macs (G5's and a PowerBook with latest OS and updates) have been able to communicate via iChat. With new offices, most Mac users went to the new building. I'm still in the old building where the network server is kept. Once the others moved, we are no longer able to see each other via iChat. The only exception are two stations in the same office which share the same Ethenet wall connection.
Bringing any station back into the old building and connecting to the network will allow this station and my station to see each other, so I've narrowed the situation to our cable connection from the new building to the network server here in the old building. The cable used to bridge the two buildings is a Belkin 3 meter Multimode LC/ST Duplex Fiber Optic Cable.
I am able to see other Macs on the network through the Finder. I've just lost iChat and VNC capabilities since we've gone to this connection. If anyone has any ideas on how to correct the situation, whether they be adjustments to the Macs' Network settings or ideas of proven alternatives to the connection, all would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi DrVvack,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
It is likely that the computers in the new building are in a different subnet of the LAN
Lets say you are at 192.168.1.100.
Others in your building also start 192.168.1.xxx
The other building is likely to be on a router for that building. Now the router is probably at an IP that is in the same group as your computer - but it will be issuing IPs of it's own.
Now a bit like street numbers this other router could be using a similar set of IP addresses (192.168.1.xxx) but it is the IPs in relation to the original routing device that makes a difference.
You can get around this by creating a Virtual Private Network then the Bonjour side of iChat will see everyone.
Another option is to have the second router in Bridge mode or Access point mode (not routing) and have everyone have an IP from the original device.

  • My G5 can't locate other computers on the network

It's weird it can find the internet and networked printers but NO other computers at all. Furthermore other computers on the network have no problem finding each other or this specific computer.
    Any ideas?
There are both macs, windows, and a linux based NAS on this network.

It most certainly does explain why one wouldn't be able to see others, if it's not configured as part of a workgroup or the automounter isn't running, this single machine will not be able to mount on demand, those shares which are advertised on other hosts.
Macs are not complicated and as I see by your signon, you know something of a root account. I would think you'd feel right at home on a mac under it's covers I myself have been a real Unix sysadmin for 18 years and played on all types of enterprise hardware, believe me, Macs are easy to fiddle with. Most of the time, when someone can't see other machines using the network browser,it's because some tool disabled NFS. Check your /etc/hostconfig for the automounter line and also check in the /Library/StartupItems and make sure NFS gets hit when the box starts.
I know if I kill my automounter, all the network mounting stops.

  • Can't see the other Mac on the network

I have a iMac G5 and a MacBook Pro connected via wirelss at home. Sometimes I can't see the other Mac in the Network folder, however I can connect to the other Mac (even I can't see them in the network folder) by afp the IP address via Safari... I have enabled the "personal file sharing" option in both of the machine.
    Help please.
    Samuel

    Sam,
I've had the same problems numerous times myself: the other Macs don't show in the network folder. Why? I'm not too sure myself, I've been given several possible explanations by the geniouses in San Francisco. However, the best trick to connect is via the Finder 'Go to' menu. The very last item should say something like "Connect to server..." -which is the same as the 'Command-K' combination of keys. That'll bring up a list of the last few servers on the network, and al you have to do is choose the one you want, and voilà!

  • How do you use Time Machine to restore a specific users account?  I can't do it from the user screen because I am not allowed.  I can't do it from the admin because I can't see other users in Time machine.

I can't restore my user account from the users screen because I get an alert that Mac OS needs something.  I can't restore in TimaeMachine from the Admin screen because I can't see other users home folders.  What can I do?

Do you have a home network?
Personal File Sharing: You can connect Macs on a local network with Tiger’s Personal File Sharing, which allows you to mount folders from the sharing Mac on the master Mac—note that the slave Macs do the sharing; the master Mac doesn’t have to. To turn on Personal File Sharing on the slave Mac, do this:
    Open System Preferences.
In the System Preferences window, click Sharing.
In the Sharing pane, click Services.
In the Select a Service to Change Its Settings list, select the Personal File Sharing checkbox.
Now that the slave Mac has sharing turned on, you can mount it on the master Mac’s Desktop:
In the Finder, choose Go -> Network.
In the Network window, select the sharing Mac.
    Click Connect.
In the Connect to Server window, click Registered User, enter the user account name and password for the sharing Mac, and then click Connect.
In the window that appears, select the volume that contains the folder you want to sync with, and then click OK.

  • How can I see my Mac in another Mac?

How can I see my Mac in another Mac?
I mean, I have a Mac in the office and a Mac at home. Is it possible not to carry mine, just to connect it to the office's one? Thank you very much

"Sharing" the way Mac OS X uses it means giving permission for others to use something. Once Sharing something is enabled, you just use the thing that has been Shared.
To access your Mac at work from the Internet would require changing the configuartion of the Router at work to allow port-forwarding.

  • Why can I see other peoples' WiFi networks but not my own?

This is a problem that started when an engineer came to replace our TV's set top box as well as our router a few weeks ago. I'll run through everything in quick bullet-point form...
-My flatmates are able to see and connect to our network with no issues at all on their XP laptops.
I, on the other hand, can not see or connect to our network at all. However, I am able to see other WiFi networks.
-Days of rebooting and replugging the router, my iMac and AirPort card prove fruitless.
-Throughout all this, the router is sat on top of the set top box, which is sat on top of the TV. I move the router down so its sat next to the TV and a plant. I'm able to see and connect to our network with no issues.
-Three weeks later, the problem has returned. I can't see our network but my flatmates aren't affected.
-Thinking it may just be poor reception in my room, I set up my Mac in the front room a couple of feet away from the router. I detect other networks, but still not my own.
-More unplugging and rebooting later, hallelujah, I can see and connect to our network. I take the Mac back to my room and try from there. No luck. The familiar XBoxLive8973498374, BT-HomeHub8934897, TalkTalk439847 (etc) and Sofia networks come up in my networks list as usual but not our own SpeedTouch459873439847 (etc).
We have a Thomson ST 585 router and I have an iMac G4 with the original AirPort card. Short of buying a new router, does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it?

This is what MacStumbler sees when my Mac is situated a couple of feet from the router in the front room:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3051/2308676274_00f5eba51c.jpg?v=0
Our network is the one labelled SpeedTouch. As you can see, my AirPort antenna seems to be working perfectly. However, the SpeedTouch connection (and only the Speedtouch connection) would be lost intermittently for several minutes at a time.
This is what MacStumbler sees when my Mac is in my room:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3184/2308733380_dcdc2faccd.jpg?v=0
The SpeedTouch signal strength is obviously not as strong but still reasonable. I don't seem to have any issues anymore; I can see, connect and stay connected to our network with no real problem - but I haven't changed any settings on the router.
