I can't send email because SMTP rejects my password, what's up?

I am trying to send an email and I get this pop-up that says:
The SMTP server "smtp.mac.com" rejected the password for user
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
When I enter my password and click OK the same box pops up again. This seems odd and hasn't happened before so why?

I think I will have to wait until Apple sorts the problem out or if it persists tomorrow, I will continue to seek support on these or other boards. I went into the keychain access.app and verified my information, no errors found. I reset my password for my email account server (smpt) and still have the problem. Must be a problem with Apple.

    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

  • Can't send email with SMTP servers

Not sure if I have the right SMTP server but I'm using mail.1xbell.ca and have also tried smtp.bellaliant.net. I can receive fine but can't send. It just times out. Tried it on 3G and WIFI.
I'm using Aliant in Newfoundland, Canada for my email and the phone is with Telus. The tech dude at Aliant wouldn't tell be dick all because the phone is with another carrier even though my email is with Aliant.
Any suggestions in getting this fixed?

If the email account provider for the email account is not the internet service provider associated with the wi-fi network your iPhone is connected to at the time and the email account provider for the email account does not have an authenticated SMTP server, you won't be able to send with the account - unless you have access to the ISP's SMTP server being used for your internet connection at the time.
As already provided, most if not all ISPs block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of the ISP's network or that isn't provided by the ISP being used for your internet connection at the time unless the SMTP server is authenticated.
A MobileMe account is my primary email account which has an authenticated SMTP server and I've never had a single problem sending with the account from my iPhone over the last 3 years regardless my internet connection at the time - various wi-fi networks with different associated ISPs or when connected to AT&T's cellular network.
Having an account with an authenticated SMTP server is the key.

  • Can't send email through SMTP server

As some others have reported, I recently started having problems sending emails (most of the time) through my regular smtp server (receiving is not an issue). Once in a while it does go out, but most of the time I get a message "Can't send message using the server smtp.XXXX.com". I know it's not the smtp server as I can go out with my browser and use webmail and it sends fine, using the same server.
It only affects this one main email account - my other accounts seem fine (including gmail, mac, and another pop accounts), at least so far.
It is extremely frustrating - saw a whole lot of ideas for fixing it (changing ports, etc.), but don't want to mess up all the accounts that are working. I'm a long time Mac user, but not a real techie.

I know it's not the smtp server as I can go out with my browser
and use webmail and it sends fine, using the same server.
This is wrong. Whether you can send via webmail has nothing to do with whether you can send using a standard mail client such as Mail. The outgoing server that ends up delivering the message may be the same in both cases, but the outgoing server you communicate with is not. Actually, when sending via webmail you don’t even use SMTP to communicate with the outgoing server.
There are circumstances under which you may not be able to send using a standard mail client such as Mail no matter what you do (e.g. because the ports needed for SMTP are blocked by the ISP at the location you’re trying to send from), whereas webmail works fine — and may be your only option in those cases.
If it works sometimes, that means your account settings are probably correct, but you cannot discard that there is a problem with the outgoing (SMTP) server that Mail has to communicate with, even if sending via webmail works fine.

That said, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible (i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.), or shutting down both the computer and the router/modem used to connect to Internet, restarting, and see whether that makes a difference.
Mail keeps information about outgoing (SMTP) servers in a separate list independently of the mail accounts themselves. The account settings just associate one of the available outgoing servers with each account. Orphaned or dangling outgoing server entries (i.e. not associated with any account) sometimes cause weird sending problems.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit Server List from the popup menu, and delete any servers that shouldn’t be there — the Edit Server List panel shows the account each outgoing server is associated with.
If the problem persists and you have more than one mail account, try moving the account that has the problem to the top of the list in Preferences > Accounts.

  • Can't send email because server doesn't support recipient?

How do I solve inability to send email? I keep getting message "recipient was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying."

If you are using the Mail app, (I am unclear as to what you are actually using) go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars and tap on the email account and you can go in and make changes to the account password or whatever you need to change.
If you are trying to type a web address and safari is to filling the address in for you, tap the X in the URL field to remove the incorrect address and type in the correct address.

  • Can't send email because of 'password authentication' error message.

I am having a problem sending email. I can receive emails but not send. The message I am getting is "The SMTP server "mail.grandecom.net" (my provider's server) doesn't support Password authentication. Please check you account settings..."
I have checked my account settings and tried all of the variables many, many times already. i have called my ISP and confirmed the settings with them. I have 4 different mail clients on my computer and they will all correctly receive and send using the same settings as those on the ipad yet still get them same error message.
I am using the iPad over wi-fi.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I would delete the problem email account and re-enter the the account. It is easy to make an error in setting up the account but hard to find the error and that is why deleting and reentering it is often better,

  • HT4623 How can I send email after changing my AOL password on my iPad2?

After I changed my AOL password due to the latest spoofing scam, I cannot send any emails from my iPad2. I have gone to settings and changed my email password. The latest attempt to resolve this to go to the advanced page and I clicked on sent and now sent is no longer working. I think I've just made matters worse for myself. I can go to the AOL app and both receive and send emails, but I want to send directly from my iPad mail feature. Help!

in settings, mail, go through the setting for sending again.  you need to restate your password.  make sure the server name and port are correct.  It may be simpler to delete the account and start over - ( you mail is still on the aol server - it will not be lost)
If you are not real sure of the settings, simply google aol mail settings, and you should get a clear answer.
since you are receiving, you have the right password in place  - you just need to reconnect to the sending server.

  • Ios can not send emails anymore  SMTP-servers are offline...

since I have ios i have trouble with the mail account. it very often says SMTP-servers are offline...  and I have to restart the computer and sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.
What can I do to solve this
    thanks

Are you having trouble on an iPhone or iPad (which uses iOS) or on a computer? If you're having trouble on an iOS device, what does turning off your computer have to do with this? Which iPhone? Which version of iOS? Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears? Have you tried deleting the email account and adding it back?

  • Can't Send email

    Hi all,
Recently developed problem with Apple mail. I can get mail but can't send mail - I get this error message.
    ERROR
This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
The attempt to read data from the server “smtp.comtekmail.com” failed.
I've reloaded the operating system, double checked all the acount settings. I have a laptop running 10.4 and have no trouble with the mail.
    Suggstions welcome.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi sundance2548.
I don’t really know what’s going on here, but...
Mail Help has some articles devoted to sending problems, e.g. “I can't send email” or “I can't send email because the connection to the server on port 25 timed out”. You may want to take a look at them in case there is something there that applies to you.
Something that usually works if you’re trying to use an outgoing (SMTP) server different from the one provided by your ISP (and in the case of .Mac in particular) is changing the outgoing server port to 587 instead of 25 in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Server Settings.
On the other hand, if the outgoing server that doesn’t work is the one provided by your ISP, the problem could be that you’re telling Mail to authenticate, but the outgoing server doesn’t actually require authentication because it can determine who you are by other means.
