I can't set up my new iPad from backup. It keeps looping

I have bought my wife a new iPad for Christmas and I am trying to setup with a restore from backup. My Mackbook iTunes tells me it is ready to go, but the iPad keeps going back to the start of setup. Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks. This worked, although I didn't have to do the restore. I set up as new and all the apps and data was there.

If you want to migrate your phone to a new iCloud account, start by saving any photo stream photos you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tap the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward pointing arrow), then tap Save to Camera Roll. If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Keep on My iPhone and provide the password to turn off Find My iPhone. Then sign back in with a different Apple ID to create your new account and choose Merge to upload your data.

You can download the apps again by opening App Store app on the iPad and tap Purchased at the bottom. That will display all apps that you have previously purchased on that Apple ID and you can download any of them by using the icon to the right of each (icon of a cloud with a down arrow).

You are someone had to put a check in the box to encrypt your iPhone backup.
Warning: If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password you can continue to do backups and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.
If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore and when prompted by iTunes to select the backup to restore from, choose Set up as a new device.

How long does it take to set up a new ipad from a backup?

Just bought an ipad mini and decided to mirror my full size ipad onto it so chose the set up option to restore from backup.
It seems to have some what it needs to do but it gets stuck on step 6 of 6, resoring data.
Its been doing this for hours now, Im sure it must have a problem.

This is not a suggestion. Do not follow it, but I tell you what happened to me a couple of years ago.
Recovering data from Backup via cable an iTunes to feed a new iPhone with data saved from the old one I was in the same situation: no activity after a long time.
I disconnected the iPhone, reset it and started again. It worked.
You will find here a lot of more clever suggestion, I did it on the basis that a Backup could not be demaged by disconnection.

My family gave me a new iPad for Christmas and I am not able to set it up. I receive a message that "the activation server is temporarily unavailable". I asume Apple is flooded with new users trying to set up new devices. I am suprised that they would not have expected a large demand on Christmas, or is there some other problem?

As I mentioned earlier, the main time when this becomes an issue is if you need to do something involving associating a computer with a particular AppleID. Careful management of your collection should minimize this situation.

So the first account is really "yours" and you are setting her up with her own account? It helps to know this because if both are "hers" then there isn't an issue with her having full access to both accounts. If in 10 years she moves 2000 miles away and she is pretty much independent then you may not want her to have full access to your AppleID just so she can authorize a device.

Setting up a new iPad from a backup a real pain

With the technologies available one would think that when buying / upgrading to a new iPad it would be easy.
Don't fool yourseld it's a HUGE pain, what makes it worse is when the OS is different.
Why would there be a STOP option during a restore if it does nothing when you press it????
All I want to do is install the new OS then be able to select the beckup I want to restore, not what Apple thinks I want to restore.
Come on Apple you can do better than this. even MS offers this option.

No... but be aware that if you take it into an Apple Store for warranty support, Apple will know that it was purchased in the US and could conceivably require payment of an import duty or tax - I have no idea if this is so in Brazil, but have read reports that it is true in some countries.

The iPhone's backup is not a full mirror backup.
The backup does not include any iTunes content - no music, tones, podcasts, movies, tv shows, audio & print books, and 3rd party apps. The backup does not include any photos that were transferred from your computer.

Will receive new iPad tomorrow and plan to import settings and Apps from backup of current iPad2. Plan to signup for AT&T 4G service on new iPad. When I backup from current iPad which is 3G won't those settings transfer and thus interfear with setting up new 4G service? How do I deal with this issue? thanks for any help.

I already own a iPad 2 that is regularly backed up to iCloud.
Now I got a new iPad Air 2 that should contain exactly the same music, movies, apps and so on.
So I thought I would restore a backup of the old iPad to the new one and after that I just rename the new one.
Will that work if I want to keep the old iPad around?
Again: I don't want to replace the old one, I just want to add a second to my line-up with the same configuration.
Any help welcome.

That's exactly what I thought.
And it seems to work.
Except that in iTunes under Account information -> Manage Devices I now have two devices with the same (old) name.
See screenshot below (German OS X but you will see what i mean)

I am in a hotel in Japan and stuck at the setup stage. I get the following error: Y'our iPad cannot not be activated beacuase the activation server cannot be reached'. Well ths is because the hotel requires extra logon info via a pop-screen in the web-browser. The Apple setup procedure does not allow to go into safari to do this. Any tips how to activate my iPad in this hotel?

Selectively transfer data to new ipad from backup

My 64gb 1st generation ipad was recently stolen. I do, however, have a recent backup stored on my macbook pro. I would like to replace my ipad and restore my old data, however I am cheap and feel that 16gb should be sufficient for my needs. I was wondering whether restoring from the backup will work, given the difference in the hard drive size (the size of the backup folder on my mac pro is 46gb). Most of the old data is movies which I don't need. However, there is <1gb of critical data (personal notes) which I desperately want to see again. Is there any way to selectively recover this data? Sounds like I'm stuck then. I found one forum thread that suggested you could trick the ipad into selectively overlooking data from certain apps during restore by deleting them from itunes (https://discussions.apple.com/message/23622388?searchText=Selectively%20transfer %20data%20to%20new%20ipad%20from%20backup#23622388). If true, I think this could solve my problem since most of the data is from a single app. Do you think this could work?
