I can't set up my Time Capsule

I bought a time capsule to set up as an external hard drive and a wireless repeater for my mac, in a household where everyone else is using a PC and there is an "untouchable router" that provides wireless internet.
Everytime I try to set up the Capsule to feed off of the wireless internet at home I fail miserably.
Can someone please walk me through it?

Hi, Ghiato.
Sorry for the long reply delay... gotta work sometime.
So I looked around a little more and found a couple discussions asking the same question... Can the TC be used as a backup drive only?  And the answer seems to be yes.  We just have to figure out how to add your TC to the network you already have.
What do we know about your current wireless network... the one your iMac and the PCs join now?
With your iMac connected to your existing wifi network, go to System Preferences > Network, then select the Wi-Fi connection in the left-hand panel and let's find out these things...
• What Location setting is selected?  Is it Automatic, or something other?
• What is the IP address of your iMac when it's connected? Is it 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx?
Ask you PC network person about your wifi network.
• Is it the D-Link router that the PCs connect to? Is that the router you have to restart after the TC tries to connect?
• Also, you will need to know your current wifi network name and password - BUT DO NOT post those in this discussion... just keep them handy.
• And for my own curiosity, what part does the EnGenius router play in your network?
All are important to know as we try to get your TC to play nice.
And you should also reassure your PC network people that they don't have to be afraid of the Apple stuff. I've actually found that when starting from scratch, an Apple network is much easier to setup than any PC net.

  • How can I set up my time capsule as the primary base station with a centurylink router? I'm trying to extend my coverage, increase signal strength, and be able to connect a printer.

I recently moved and now I'm trying to set up my Time Capsule as the primary base station or router with an existing network that has a Centurylink modem/router. The TC still has the settings for my old network. I also have backups on it. I have the data backed up to another HD so it's not an issue to return it to factory settings if doing so deletes the back ups. Do I need to restore it to the factory settings to set it up? Also, what settings would I select on the TC (and the Centurylink modem/router) in order for the TC to serve as the router, instead of the Centurylink router? I want to be able to use the TC to back up my Mac's, print wirelessly, and improve overall performance. I tried setting the TC up and ended with 2 different networks. Can anyone please help me with this?

The TC has to plug into the existing modem router by ethernet.. you cannot use wireless.
You have a choice of which is router.. only if Centurylink agree to bridge their modem router.. this has to be done by the ISP and often they do not allow it.
Is your broadband cable or adsl or fibre or ???
If it is cable and you are allowed to purchase your own cable modem pick a pure modem version with no router in it.. plug the TC into it by ethernet.
Setup the TC in DHCP and NAT mode.. (depending on broadband type).
You must reset the TC to factory to do the setup.. no files are lost at all.
Here is my current recommended setup.. with Yosemite life has become harder than ever.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.

  • I can't set up my time capsule - please help!

I can't seem to set up my Time Capsule at all since I switched Internet providers to Virgin. Whenever I try to it says that the network password is not correct but I KNOW it is. I've tried it wired via Ethernet with the wireless turned off but still it does nothing. Has anybody got a link to an absolute fail proof guide to setting it up. I've had a Time Capsule before that worked fine.
    Thanks

LaPastenague is correct in saying you need to setup the Time Capsule in bridge mode. It sounds like you are using a modem router combo.
Just get a regular ethernet cable(same as a "patch cable") and connect it from the LAN port on the modem to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. Go through the setup as normal and if it asks you to put it in bridge mode do so. (if you are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier it will prompt you for it. If you are using a Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later it will automatically put it into bridge mode if it is receiving a private ip address).
    To verify bridge mode:
10.6.8 or Earlier: Airport Utility > Select Time capsule > Manaul Setup > Internet Icon Along the top > Internet Connection Tab > Connection Sharing. If it says "Share a Public IP" Switch it to Off(Bridge Mode)
10.7.5 or Later: Airport Utility > Click on the Time Capsule > In the window to the right of it click "Edit" > Network Tab > Router Mode. If it says "DHCP and NAT" switch it to Off(Bridge Mode)
    Hope this simplifies things....

  • How can we set up a Time Capsule to run on a Verizon FIOS network that's already set up with its own router?

We have a Time Capsule that we want to use STRICTLY as a backup device and not as a router, which the setup system seems to want to do.  We can't get beyond the option to switch the device to a new network, which we fear will disconnect a vital Internet connection.  Any ideas?

Once you click Update at the end of the configuration process in AirPort Utility, the TC light should turn green in 25-30 seconds.
Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored to the TC as the TC will "disappear" from the AirPort Utility window.
Once you have a green light on the TC, if you need to access the settings again on the TC, you can do so be temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from your computer to one of the other LAN ports on the TC. Open AirPort Utility and the TC will appear.
If you don't plan to use the wireless on the TC to provide another network, it would be a good idea to turn it off to help prevent wireless interference issues with the other wireless network.
To do this....open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icon
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to "Off"
    Update to save the changes

  • How can I set up a time capsule to extend my wifi network from a non-apple Medialink MWN-WAPR300N?

I just purchased a new Medialink MWN-WAPR300N from Amazon to replace my old 2008 500 GB Time Capsule.
I was wondering if it would be possible to use my old Time Capsule to extend the network from the Medialink router to the rooms in the back of my house. Would this be possible? How about if I use the Time Capsule as the primary point, and use the Medialink router to extend the network?
    Thanks!

The Time Capsule would not be compatible with a Medialink product if you are thinking of trying to use the Time Capsule to extend the Medialink network using wireless only.
The same would be true if the Time Capsule were the primary router, and you tried to use the Medialink product to extend the Time Capsule network wirelessly.
If you can connect the two devices together using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, then you should be able to accomplish your goal.

  • How can I set up my time capsule when I don't have access to our building's wireless router?

Our apartment includes internet but we do not have access to the router. We only want to use the time capsule to back-up our computer not as a wireless router. We have tried setting it up but the light flashes amber and it cannot set-up.

Cannot by ethernet for the first setup..put the TC in bridge mode and it should work fine.. There are a lot cheaper solutions to do this than a TC though.

  • I can't set up my Time Capsule, what can I do?

The problem is that Airport Utilility doesn't recognize the device.

Use ethernet for intiial setup.. wireless is useless.
Plug it directly into the computer.. press and hold reset until the front led flashes and then do the setup.
You do not need the TC in the network to do this..

  • How do i set up my time capsule wifi for many users

    hello ..
    i have problem.. as always
my time capsule is connected to dsl modem (off(bridge mode)), in modem we can get only 10 ip adresses and no more. so when there are 10 pc connected to our wifi, no more can connect.... how can i set up my time capsule, so more people can join our wifi...? is it even possible?
    P.S.
    1) to our wifi is connected printer, so everybody can print...
    2) every pc uses time capsule as bacup place in time machine.
    tnx

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my DSL through the time capsule? I'd like to leave my current modem from my provider as the primary unit for networking.  So in other words can I just set up the time capsule as a back-up device for now and

Quick question!!  Is it mandatory that I set up my time capsule as my DSL modem?  Based on the location of my iMAC right now it would be better to just leave the modem provided by my internet provider in place.  I really just want to use the time capsule as a back-up storage device for now and connnect the ethernet cable from my ISP at a later date.

Generally it is easier to bridge the TC and plug it into the router.. it then lives on the network.. it is after all, a network drive.. and you can access it via your existing connection whether wireless or wired to the existing modem.
If you really want a totally stand alone setup please tell me how you are presently accessing internet on the Mac you want to backup on the TC.

  • I changed my ISP, how I can Setting up my Time Capsule ?

Recently, I changed my ISP, how I can Setting up my Time Capsule again?

Hello. I jus tbought mine and will be setting up shortly. So I am only guessing here, based on how my airport extreme base station acted when I switched once. When you connect the ethernet to it, it should simply find the signal,a nd prompt you for the password information that you set up with the new ISP.
If not, please report back how it goes..

  • Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files but still have them on the TC for future reference..

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

Are you using a v6 uitlity.. because it is a toy.. ??
Get v5 utility and then you can hold down the option key and select the right mode.
If you have lion, just install it.. For ML follow this.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • I can't connect with the Time Capsule.

    Hello everyone,
Some years ago, I bought a Time Capsule. Until now, I didn't want to use it as an extern HD.
    So I tried today.
I am using it for a year now, as main router. Several computers and iDevices are using it.
Because I had forgotten some things - and I hadn't wrote it down - I decided  to reset it and configure it again.
Since then, the internet has become slower - and I my Macbook pro can't connect to the Time Capsule's disk.
In Finder's everything fine. Left, under 'Shared', I can see the Time Capsule as a HD.
When I click on it, I see: "No Connection". Then I select "Connect As", and I fill in the Time Capsule password.
It tries to connect a few minutes, but then I get the message:
"The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."
In the Airport Utility, there's a green light.
*My firmware has the newest updates
    *I am using Snow Leopard
*I am using newest update of the Airport Utility
*Since reset, internet's fine but a bit slower.
    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)

What actual model is the TC.. the A1xxx number from the rubber base mat???
As they age they become unreliable. Some earlier and some at 3year mark.
It greatly depends on the setup of the existing network.
I would recommend a downgrade in the TC firmware.. as with Snow Leopard there is no advantage to you in the later firmware.
Go to the airport utility and select firmware update.. hold down the option key when you make the selection and all the previous versions available for your model will come up. I recommend using 7.5.2
Do another reset of the device. This time a full factory reset.. and start the configuration again.
Ignore update to firmware requests.. turn off the reminder.
Set all names to SMB standard. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. TC name, wireless names, hard disk name.
For wireless I recommend you use wpa2 security with 8-12 character passkey.. pure alphanumeric.
Set to manual for radio channels and test 1, 6, 11 in turn for the best.
Depending on the broadband you use, the TC must be in router or bridge mode.. tell us more if you need help for this.
If you think the TC is slowing you down, do a test with direct connection to the broadband modem and give us the speed comparison.. direct and via the TC ethernet or wireless.. tell us which though.. wireless will always be slower than ethernet.
If you have issues still with the hard disk it might need some work.. older models the disk might need to be erased .. please open any time machine backup and run a verify.

    Other Questions:
*Can I use my Time Capsule for other things than only Time Machine (backup)?
Yes, but the TC is designed primarily for Time Machine.. if you store files, there is no method in the TC to back up those files.. do not make them the only store.
*Can I divide it in parts? (Backup, User)
You cannot partition a TC .. not without removing the disk. You can create a disk image.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
*Can I backup multiple devices on it? (Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air etc.)
You can use multiple devices with TM. Be aware you need lots of free space for this to be successful. So you need to add up the total you want to backup on each computer.. and at least double it.
