I can't shut down the Mail application.

My Mail application won't shut down. I have seen others with this query but haven't understood how to follow through with the solution provided.
My mail also wont send any mail. No probs getting it. No idea what to do. Can anyone help?

I had this issue and got frustrated having to force quit all the time.
I usually quit all programs with shortcut keys.
MAIL now quits everytime if I just click Mail-Quit Mail
Don't use shortcuts to quit it and it will be fine

Try to "Force Quit" Safari - either under the Apple menu or by holding down option-Command-esc.

  • How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

How can I shut down the start sound on my IMac under OS X 10.9.5

Did you try using 'mute' in the System Preferences> Sound> output>
control panel? This usually will mute the startup sound; you may have
to try a few things to be sure only the startup will mute, not all sounds.
Of course, you could likely write an apple script in automator or in
text edit, that could automatically mute before shutdown and then
in startup items, have the script un-mute the audio for everything.
There are possibilities that do not include the command line; but
if you learn how to use that, without messing up other functions,
then even more custom control is possible in Mac OS X.
With that, you could write a substitute 'sound file' with white noise
or nothing in there; so instead of Bong, it'd be as quiet as a mouse.
PS: You may have a local reason why the site link posted above
does not work for you, but it does function and if the product is
free to use, and does not include adware or malware, here is an
untested download link from their site. (I can go there, easily.)

    and note:
    http://www.allvu.com/downloads/StartNinjaInstaller.dmg is the
actual DL link for this product. Mouse over the buttons to see it.
(The other downloads are highly suspect; even this one is to me)
There may be a reason in your Mac OS X 10.9.x for gatekeeper
to not allow odd download installations, there is a way around
that feature, but I do not recommend using unknown software.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can't quit mail and thus, I can't shut down the computer. How do you "manually " shut down mail or computer (control-alt-delete in wintel world)

I cannot quit mail for some reason. How can I shut it down?
I need to do this before I can shut down the computer.

To Force Quit a program go to the Apple Logo item in the menu bar and select Force Quit. Select the program from the list and click Force Quit.
To Hard Power down it is the same as Wintel. Press the power button until the system Turns Off. Not the best solution but needed sometimes. Yes even on a Mac.

  • My air won't open mail and I can't shut down computer because I can't quit mail

My MacBook Air won't open mail. Now I can't shut down the computer because mail interrupts shutdown but I can't quit mail either

Try doing a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider if that appears.

  • Can't shut down / restart after Leopard upgrade

The installation went ok - I had to unplug all peripherals for it to reboot at the end of the install.
Now when I want to shut down or restart, it just doesn't. After a while it brings an error message that it can't shut down because an application (e.g. firefox) doesn't want to quit. Even if I close all running applications, it still comes back and says it can't close Finder (at that point, there is no menu bar on top anymore, however the application bar on bottom is still there - showing now application active. And then it just sits there. I have to push and hold the power button for it to switch off.
Anybody any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks -
    Jo

Yes. I know. If you could type everything about the problem, it would be too long for anyone to read.
Be patient, because I would like to track down where you are getting this "hang."
If you "Quit" (via command Quit) all open appications except Finder (verify this by opening the Apple icon --> Force Quit and verify that nothing except "Finder" is showing); disconnect all external firwire and USB devices; and then choose shut down, do you still get a hang?
If it still hangs, and you get the message that you can't shut down because some application will not quit, then open Aptivity Monitor (Applicaitons --> Utilities), are any of the processes listed displayed in red?
I think that the deal is that you've got an applicaiton hanging that is preventing a system shup down. I bet we can find the culprit.

  • Address Book reopens spontaneously - can't shut down.

Ack. Anyone else have this problem?
I can't quit Address Book - it quits, then pops up again in the dock, reopened. The activity monitor shows that it's eating up a ton of CPU, too - 90% or more. I can't shut down the machine without removing the battery.
    Kurt

I've never seen that before, but there could be a few explanations for how that could happen. The easiest thing I can think of to try first is to open a Finder window, go to the /Applications folder, and rename Address Book to something else (such as Address Book2).
If that doesn't work, you could try making a new user account using System Preferences, logging in with the new account, and seeing if the problem happens for that user as well. If it doesn't happen for the new user, then it is a user-level configuration issue (if that makes sense). That would suggest that the problem is somewhere within the data of your original user's home folder.
