I can't stop "Reads in/sec" disk activity, remains at constant 20-30

I was hoping this community would be able to help me to solve this problem of constant disk activity I can't figure out. I'm afraid it'll kill my disk eventually.
Problem:
Constant disk access noise, "Reads in/sec" remains at constant 20-30 even when I have next to nothing running. It's clearly attempting to do something. Kernel task is one of the few tasks showing activity, but only a few CPU %.
This occurs only on one user account. If I switch the account to a clean one, disk activity stops.
In Disk Utility I've tried repairing permissions. Also, Verify reveals nothing abnormal.
Setup:
- MacBook Pro 2GHz / 2GB RAM / >50GB Free disk space
- FileVault
- Mac OSX 10.4.9
Advanced
Typing sudo fs_usage in Terminal reveals following constant activity pattern between "pread", "select" and "RdData"

I'm running out of things to try. Any ideas on how might I fix this? Should I migrate my (massive FileVaulted) directory to a clean account or what?

Seems you're running some sync program in that user account. Since it doesn't happen in another account, it's not system-wide. If you have one running, quit it and see if that fixes things. If not, then disable FileVault and see that fixes things.

  • How can I save reader to a disk, it goes straight to download?

I have a computer that is running Windows XP Home edition and is not connected to the internet.  I need to put a copy of the Acrobat Reader on it.  I have attempted several times on another computer to save the program to a disk, but there is only one option on the website - click download.  When I do it goes straight to downloading on the computer I'm working on, without giving me a choice of location.  What can I do to get this thing to disk so I can carry it to the other computer?

    Download it from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ instead.

Before you do anything, backup your computer. Time Machine is easiest and works great. I will wait...
Ok, all backed up? Great, let's go!
First, try restarting your computer. Don't put it to sleep and wake it up, actually restart it by select "Restart..." off the Apple menu.
Still slow? Then bring up "Activity Monitor" (via Spotlight if you don't know where it is.) Select the "CPU" tab and click on the "%CPU" column to get it to sort highest to lowest. Is anything running taking up loads of CPU time? If so, that is most likely the culprit. If not...
Shutdown your computer. Restart and after you here the tone, hold down the "shift" key. Release it once you see the spinning gear or the progress bar. This boots you into safe mode and performs a disk check. This insures that the HFS+ file system has no issues which could cause slowdowns or other, nastier, issues.
Reboot your machine in the usual fashion to see if this fixed your issue.
Still slow? Perhaps you no longer have enough memory (RAM) for the tasks you are trying to accomplish.
    Good luck!

  • How can I stop Reader from opening dozens of attachments?

Starting this morning, when I went to open a .pdf on my Macbook Pro, Reader opened dozens of attachments from many other emails in my inbox, going back weeks.  I've re-booted and tried again, but same as before.  If I use "Preview" on the Mac, it doesn't do that.  What have I done wrong?  Thanks in advance for any good suggestions!

  • The disk can not be read or written to!

    So this is the setup:
Latest version of iTunes running on the wifes PowerBook under 10.4.X
I’m using a new 4th Gen iPod Nano and I’m trying to sync the iPod to the library. Its gets about 400meg in and then comes up with error ‘The disk can not be read or written to etc etc...’ It stops at the same time every time.
The library is split between 70% CDs and the other 30% is are tunes copied over from my iTunes library.
I’ve authorised her Mac to play them so there should be no issue there (I think) as purchased tracks do play in her iTunes.
    I’ve tried repairing permissions
Restoring the iPod and making sure the FW is up to date
    Changing USB ports
    What else can I try?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Sean,
Have you also tried reformatting the iPod using the tools provided by Windows?

  • How can I stop  Adobe Reader from opening after start up?

I just installed version 9. I remember a question that appeared during installation that was something like "do you want Adobe Reader to open after start up?" I said checked yes because I assumed this meant I wanted it in my StartUp menu. After everything loads and my desktop comes up, the Adobe Reader file opens up showing all the program's files and just sits there. I have to close it each time after start up.
I looked through Preferences, but can't find a way of stopping the program's file window from opening after start up. How can I stop this? Thanks for your help.

    Edit>Preferences
    Under Page Display:
Where it says "Location of referenced files", if it shows "Floppy Disk A:/" clear the box, or choose an alternate location if you can't clear it.

  • USB Floppy Drive That Can Read 2-DD Disks?

I need to access some info from some 2-DD floppies, and I got a Sony MPF88E for this purpose. Although it says in the manual it can read these disks, it doesn't; I put the disk in, it sounds like it's spinning, and then stops, without displaying an icon, and Disk Utility doesn't see anything there. The drive was able to read an HD floppy just fine. I told this to Sony and they said it should read 2-DDS, so it must be defective. I got another drive with the same result. Also, I tried two different 2-DD floppies each time with the same result.
Interestingly, I went looking for another drive and see the SmartDisk 2x floppy drive on the Apple Store, but one reviewer says it doesn't read 2-DD disks: http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/T8169LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&p=1&s=topSellers
I can probably pick up a Quadra or something for the price of a drive, but for convenience sake (I've got boxes full of floppies I'd like to archive and get rid of), I'd really like a USB drive.
I also see a Lacie floppy drive out there with favorable reviews except that it's "slow," which for floppies is something you kinda have to live with, but it's a "1x" drive, and I wonder if this spec might have anything to do with its reading ability? The Sony and the SmartDisk are both "2x."
Can anyone recommend a USB floppy drive that can definitely read 2-DD disks?
    Thanks!

I can tell you that the LaCie drive with a mechanism by Y-E Data definitely has the same problem. I first tried using it yesterday and couldn't get it to read any of the disks I wanted to use. I contacted LaCie, and their tech had no idea what the problem was. This morning, I tried all the disks I have lying around and two worked like a charm. I thought it had something to do with brand until I realized they were both HD disks and the rest were DD disks. Y-E blames it on the lack of capability in the Apple Driver in OSX, but either way, I still can't read my DD disks in 10.5.6.

  • How can i stop my mbp from starting up in target disk mode

how can i stop my mbp from starting up in target disk mode

It should only do that if you hold down the T key at startup.  Otherwise the PRAM battery is probably near death, or the T key needs to be cleaned so it doesn't think it is being held down.  To clean the keyboard properly, you will probably need to bring it in for service.

  • You can't use The following message is stopping me access my disk utility.  'this version of the application "Disk Utility" with this version of OS X.'  not only that my Mac pro keeps dropping my internet connection and logs on to BT Open.

After installing Yosmite, The following message is stopping me accessing my disk utility.  'You can't use this version of the application “Disk Utility” with this version of OS X.' you have “Disk Utility” 12.1.1.
not only that my Mac pro keeps dropping my internet connection and logs on to BT Open.
    Help

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Check that you have the current version of Disk Utility.

I try several time to send my song list from libraly to iPod. But it's show me that " The iPod can not be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to. "
About this problem i try to do manythings follow some reply for advice me. but i still got problem. and i try to check something in my PC and found something wrong. i go to properties of disk drive and go to hard ware that show me all hard drive i have include Apple iPod USB Device. i go to properties for check it and see
    Device status :
No driver are installed for this device
    Device usage :
    Use this device (enable)
i'm not sure that because of this problem? if yes, how to do? because i do manythings such as use 5 R's and program reset utility. But i still got this problem. Help me plz.

Sorry to see your having these issues Jihant. Posted below I have some links that may assist you with your troubleshooting steps.
One of the first things you may want to look at is
    1. Download and Install latest iTunes Software. You should have iTunes 7.2
    2. You stated earlier you did the 5 Rs. So you have done a Reset and Restore. I would give it one more shot after you upgraded iTunes as needed.
If this still does not resolve the issue. Try copying songs over 1 at a time. Do not copy over a playlist. Then try a new play list all together. Create a new playlist.
You can also take a CD you may have and put import songs into iTunes then see if those songs will copy over.
You may also create a new user and open up iTunes in a new user and import a cd with some songs and see if the same issue occurs.
    You can also try
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
And if this still does not work for you. You may want to try another computer.
or if the above article does not resolve the issue

If this still occurs please call Apple for further assistance

  • Disk can not be read from or written to

This iPod nano second gen is brand new. Bought it today and I put like 10 songs and 10 photos on for my sister and now it's saying "disk can not be read from or written to" and now it's not showing up in iTunes or "My Computer". Help, please?

Is there an error number listed in the message? This would be helpful. You may also want to check for other threads that may have already answered your questions before posting. Another good option even before using the forums is to go to the iPod nano support section and then search through the articles for possible solutions. The links I have provided to some of your threads have come from aquick search of the problem you listed starting on the main support page Support.

    A few things to try:
    • Restore Permissions, using Disk Utility (in ~Applications/Utilities)
    • Set the correct Ownership & Permissions for the iTunes folder:
Select the iTunes folder in ~/Users/YourUsername/Music.
    Get Info (command-I).
Expand 'Ownership & Permissions' and 'Details:'
You must read: 'You can Read & Write': if not, change it.
Click on the 'Apply to enclosed items...' button.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I stop batch reading, if any error comes in a batch, in File Adapter

    Hi All,
I am reading files in batches of 100 lines as there are 1000 records. Can I stop further reading of records from a file, If any error comes in any batch.
e.g. If my file adatpter is readinf 101 lines, if any error comes in this line, then it should stop reading line 102 and so on.
    Regards

    Hi Vikas,
I am not sure what you mean exaclty by stop reading - would you be fine if the other lines are rejected till end of file, if an error is encountered?
Then you can achieve that by ensuring that your schema does not have nxsd:uniqueMessageSeparator="${eol}" in the schema element.
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31017_01/integrate.1013/b28994/adptr_file.htm#CACEGBFD
I am not entirely sure if that would be a good design decision though.
    Regards,
    Shanmu.
