I can't update OS5 on Ipad!

I am trying to update IOS5 on my Ipad.. But every time I try to do so, it says "The Ipad software update server could not be contacted"... I am using Windows 7 and I have no idea how to fix this. I have tried using Apple Support, but that didn't work. Can someone please help me? Also, when I try to access the Itunes Store, it says "We could not complete your Itunes Store request. The network connection timed out." Although I'm pretty sure my network is working fine. SOMEONE, PLEASE HELP!!

Other people appear to be reporting the same problem, so it looks like there might be a problem with Apple's servers

You could but it's probably not advisable, because as part of the update process all content is removed from the iPad, the update is then applied, and the content is then re-synced to the iPad - so is all your father's content (media, apps, synced photos etc) on your computer so that they can be re-synced back to it ? It is usually best to only sync and do updates via your own computer.

From what I could find, that is an iPad 1. You can only update to iOS 5.1.1. You can do that on your computer. It may be time to look for a newer iPad as the apps now are set to use iOS 7.0.4.

I have an IPAD with 57 GM available memory. I am currently running iOS 5.1.1. Can I upgrade to a more recent version? I have treid connecting to ITunes, but no luck.

What is 57 GM? Gigabytes(GB)? Megabytes(MB)?
What model/generation of iPad is it?
If its a First Generation iPad it cannot be updated past iOS 5.1.1.
If its a Second Generation iPad or above it can be updated to the current iOS 7.

Ever since I updated my IPad 2 to the new IOS 6, I can't update about 9 of my apps! Some apps update, while others say "cannot connect to the ITunes Store". I have tried everything short of restoring it! Help!

Saw this on another post.
Applecare Senior Advisor Txx Bxxx (I have his contact info in an email he just sent) just confirmed with me that the problem people are having with the App Store not loading is an apple issue with there servers, ITS NOT YOUR IPAD so don't go restoring it! It's not happening to everyone however but they are looking into it, its really hit or miss.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

If you are on iOS 4 as your tagline suggests then you can only update by connecting to a computer's iTunes - it is only when you have iOS 5+ installed that you will get an Settings > General > Software Update option appear on the iPad which will allow you to do future updates directly on the iPad.
Connect the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and copy any purchases off the iPad via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.
