I can't upgrade from 10.5.8 to snow leopard?

i've got one of the old black macbooks. i've had it for about 3 years and last week used the cd's that came with it to format the computer back to factory settings which obviously put it back to quite an old os x version. i've tryed to get the new itunes and quicktime but both are saying i need at least 10.6.8? do i have to buy something for this? i've always been up to date with itunes and everything before i formatted but now don't seem to have the right operating system to be able to use them. until i get the new itunes i can't even plug my iphone into my computer!!!

Personally I never trust my data to everything working perfectly.
I always backup everything twice at least.

As others have stated... you now have to Telephone Apple to get a copy of Snow Leopard...
Purchase Snow Leopard or Lion

Then... Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like

That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.

I'm trying to upgrade from OS X 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. (At this point it's been such a headache that I don't even care about Lion.) If I've read correctly, I need to first upgrade to OS X 10.5 Leopard. The only problem is that I can't seem to find it anywhere on the Apple site. I even searched for the Mac Box Set that included Leopard, Snow Leopard, and iLife and can't find it either. I went to an Apple store today and they didn't even Snow Leopard on the shelf. Anyone know how I can get from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard? Do I still need to go to Leopard first? I tried looking at the requirements/tech specs for the Snow Leopard install disc in the online store, but that link takes me straight to the tech specs for Lion. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I bought the Snow Leopard DVD from the App Store (AU$20.99), it arrived in 24-48hrs and the install was a breeze.
First, I backed up to an external hard drive with Time Machine, in case of any mishaps (this took a couple of hours). It took about an hour for the initial Snow Leopard install and then another 30 mins or so for the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo to upload (available online through software updates).
I was able to update both my iMac and MacBook from the same disk.
Now, my EyeTV Diversity is running well (the original reason for thinking about an upgrade) and I'm happy to be back in the land of serviced operating systems!

(Like, perhaps, a serial number being registered by a previous owner that won't allow me to fully upgrade, etc.) Is this fear unfounded? Also, I'm only wanting to upgrade to Leopard so I can eventually get to Lion. Is there a more direct way of going about this?

Your fear is unfounded.. As long as you get a retail version (black color, not gray Mac specific) of an OS you get full functionality. There is no registration of an OS disc.

The Leopard requirements are listed below. To go to Lion 10.7 you need an Intel processor and Snow Leopard 10.6 installed if you want to download Lion. If you purchase Lion on a USB thumb drive you can go directly from Tiger.

Limnos is correct. Also, note, the Find File system of 10.5 is much weaker than 10.3.9 for locating files quickly by name. Though if you find files mainly by content, then it is better to have Spotlight. See this thread on how difficult it is to work with Spotlight based systems:

Maybe this is an opportunity to decide if you really want to upgrade that machine to Leopard or Tiger, or just stick with Panther. Unless you have some software that is Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4 only compatible, I see no reason to upgrade your Panther machine to Tiger or Leopard. Furthermore, Upgrading to Leopard will disable the Classic environment, unless you add an Firewire external hard drive with 10.4.11 or earlier, or erase and partition your hard drive to have 10.4.11 or earlier on it.
