when i go the the settings and go to system update it says: unable to check for update an error occurred while checking for a software update. and i been having problems since the ios 8 update and this is the first time that i went on software update that it told me that. every other day it said it was up to date. please help me i tried restarting and everything and nothing works.

Hey Ncdduh. I was trying to update my iPad from work WiFi, I think that may have been the issue. I switched WiFi networks and now it's going through. My iPad was pretty close to full so I deleted iMovie freeing about a gig of space up. Unsure if that contributed to my success. In any case, I got it to work. Best of luck to you.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

If the device is jail broken - and the message is that the iPad is not eligible for the requested build - there are tons of articles on the internet that discuss how to fix the iPad. Use Google.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

According to my brief search on the support site, there is some discussion on this very topic. No operating system is completely secure!! Assuming you have Messages on. You can try two things the first is a simpler than the second. Go to this site https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/, click on Manage your ID, log in and check if your Apple ID for your Messages and FaceTime apps is the the same as your primary email address. When I went there I saw a message that I should make them the same, for some reason they weren't, after I clicked on the submit to make them the same I haven't had any problem with either. Previously I kept getting signed out of both and had to constantly reenter my password to get them working. Quite a few times they wouldn't connect at all.
The second thing you can try is in Settings - General - Reset, and reset all settings. You will then have to reenter a lot of information such as account user names and passwords but this seemed to correct things for a lot of people. The first option is easier and worked for me so I'd give it a try.

I am facing error when I try to upgrade to IOS 5.
I am upgrading via my Windows PC, iTunes. While downloading and after almost 40% of download complete I receive error that disconnected from server and asking to check my internet connection.
I tried this 5 times over the past month from three different internet connection and was getting same error.
I also tried to just do the download to my PC without installing the update to iPad direct, and it failed too, below the error message.

Since I posted my questions, the only thing I figured out was to turn the 'iCloud' in the Settings on and now the plus sign is on and all my previous appointments appeared. While this is a solution, what if I don't want to use iCloud? But I'm happy for now that my Calendar works.

You can only update to the latest iOS which currently is iOS 5.1.1.
Connect your iPad to your computer and follow the prompts. If iTunes is not the latest version then you will be prompted to update that first. The same will then apply to your iPad. It will automatically do a backup unless you tell it otherwise and y will be prompted to restore from that backp in the latter part of the process.

If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer
If you see one of following alerts, you need to erase the device:
"iTunes could not connect to the [device] because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the [device] before it can be used with iTunes."
"You haven't chosen to have [device] trust this computer"
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

If the apps are not on your computer's iTunes (did you do File > Transfer Purchases prior to starting the update ?), then you could try downloading them to your computer (re-downloading) and then restoring to your backup and see if that restores them and their settings/content - a backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content/settings, so for the restore to work fully iTunes needs access to the apps so that it can restore them.

That doesn't make a lot of sense but, as a guess, you're asking what to do if you want to install apps that require a higher version of the system software. And the answer is you can't install apps that require anything above 5.1.1
