I can't use compressor on leopard

I made clean install of leopard and FCS1, and I did exactly what apple says in this article: "Unable to connect to background process"

but it still don't work, and i can't encode anything with Dvd Studio Pro either.
I use G5DP 2Gh and Final cut studio 1.

Channard: It sounds like you have the PPC version of Final Cut Studio. Is that the case, or do you actually have the universal binary (Intel) version?

I just thought I should mention that I got this problem in FCS2, not FCS1, but it seems like the solution works for both versions.
When I tried to submit a job in Compressor, after updating to Leopard, the Cluster: drop-down menu was blank, and when I hit the submit button I got this message:
Unable to submit to queue.
Please restart your computer or verify your Compressor installation is correct.
Then I checked Apple Qmaster in System Preferences, and got the message about qmasterd not running. I started qmasterd manually by typing sudo /usr/sbin/qmasterd in the Terminal. After some searching around in the Compressor/Qmaster user manuals, I found the SystemStarter command.

Can I use my Macbook Leopard Installation DVD's on my iMac?

Ok so I bought a new macbook yesterday and it has leopard. Can I use the leopard installation dvd's that it came with on my intel imac? Is this possible, or will the leopard installation dvd's not allow this?

The disks that come with the computer are only usable on that computer. The 10.5 upgrade disk may work on other machines but doing so would be in violation of the license which is for one computer. If you want to install on multiple machines you can get a five user "Family Pack" for $199

I have a one-time install of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and I have installed it onto one Mac, I have then upgraded this Mac to Mavericks through the Mac App Store. I am wondering if I am therefore allowed to install Snow Leopard using the same disc onto a second Mac?
Before you answer, please note that I have gone through most of the install process on this second Mac, and the software does not inhibit the install, henceforth, I am assuming that I am allowed to install it on the second Mac. My second question is does the install disc inhibit a second install if the copy has been activated, and would this 'activation' have been removed because the first Mac is no longer running on Snow Leopard.
I have no intention of installing Snow Leopard if it is illegal to do so a second time, I am simply interested as it would be far more convenient than buying another install disc, and having to wait 7 days or so for it to arrive.

If you upgrade to Yosemite, for example, then Snow Leopard is no longer installed on that computer. Technically and legally it can be now installed on another machine. Note, however, that if you need to erase the drive and reinstall Yosemite you must first install Snow Leopard. You could not do that if Snow Leopard was still installed on another machine.
Beyond this you are on your own, legally.

Can I use my Snow Leopard license in a virtual machine hosted by Mountain Lion?

If I upgrade to mountain lion, can I install snow leopard from my existing upgrade CD, purchased years ago? Need to keep snow leopard around because I'm running an app which won't run in newer OSX versions.

I am going to call Apple and purchase a copy of SL Server for research purposes.
Also, there are some people who need access to Rosetta that just do not have the capability to use Terminal and I have always suggested that they look into acquiring SL Server (since both Parallels and VMWare allow for easier installation of SL Server).
So putting up the look and feel of SL Server may be worth the ease of installation.
This may cause me to restart an old project: extracting all of the additional frameworks that Server installs, so that it can be installed but look like and work like Snow Leopard client again

What version of Compressor? Are you sending fom FCP X or another version of Final Cut?
I don't know the implications of getting that particular error code.

If you export a QT file from iMovie, Compressor can work on it.

Does this mean I can't use them on my desktop? Are their install discs specifically for laptops vs desktops?

You can not use the disks intended for the MBP on your iMac. Buy a retail copy of SL ($29) or contact Apple for a replacement of the original disks for the iMac.

Can I use Final Cut During Compressor Export?

Hi,
This is my first time using compressor and I'v read that you can use Final Cut while Compressor exports. When I start to export from Compressor, I get a message on Final Cut that says Frame X (what ever frame the export is on) and I can't use Final Cut when Compressor is exporting. I have rendered everything in Final Cut's timeline. Can I use Final Cut while compressor exports?

You would not lose any quality. You will speed things up considerably.
To set up compressor to use all your free cpu, you need to enable sharing with qmaster. On your system preferences, there should be a qmaster item.
There are lots of posts about how to set it up. Do a search on it. I think even apple has instructions on how to do it. You can read the compressor manual as well.
It is called distributed processing, and you will want to set up a quick cluster.
Here is an article about it. The only thing that I know is different is on Snow Leopard, you may have to select "Managed" in the services box for compressor. This will allow you to select the number of instances.

Do I need a new hard drive & can I use Leopard?

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.5Ghz with OS X 10.3.9 on the original 80GB hard drive, I've been getting a lot of problems with the computer acting very slowly and getting 'hung up' with the color wheel spinning endlessly, during which nothing responds, I can't force quit, the only thing I can do is force a shut by holding down the power key. Sometimes it takes a long time to start up. I've tried re-installing the OS but still the same problems. I ran the Apple Hardware Test which gave this error code "2STF/4/3:ATA-100 ata-6-MASTER".
Does this all mean that my hard drive is going down and I need a new one?
Can I use any size hard drive e.g. a 250GB one?
Also - If I put a new hard drive in can I then install Leopard?

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That code means there are problems with your hard drive. If you look at Disk utility (on your hard disk in applications/utilities) you may see that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows a problem. Or if you have SMARTreporter installed, it may not be green.
You can certainly use up to a 160GB hard drive. There was a discussion recently suggesting a BIOS (basic input output services) limit to 160GB ... I don't know if that's real or not.
If you do replace your hard drive, you might consider the slight price premium for a 7200rpm drive. You'll appreciate the extra snapiness in response time. And yes, you can install Leopard on it. After installing the new hard drive, boot from the DVD drive and use disk utility to format the hard drive in mac os extended (journaled) format. Then you can install Leopard.

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD. Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things. See #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

Can i use someone else's Snow Leopard boot disk to upgrade my mac?

I am unfortunately at that stage in life where as a teenager i have many lusts and "needs" but have hit the road block... money.
I have enough to buy lion through the appstore but have not got enough to first upgrade to Snow Leopard and THEN Lion as well.
If my dad has a Snow Leopard boot disk with his mac, can i use it to upgrade mine and then go on to buy Lion through the Mac Appstore?

No for possibly two reasons ... First, that's illegal as it's a violation of the Apple license agreement, and second, boot disks are locked to the system type they are delivered with. Ask your Dad instead how you can earn $29 doing some chores around the house, or let the word get out that for any holiday gifts in December that cash would be appreciated.
Since you're on Leopard today, you probaby know in wanting to move to Lion that Lion no longer has the Rosetta emulator and thus doesn't support anything with PowerPC code. That's surprised some, so just FYI.

Can I restore the Snow Leopard version of 'Preview' for use in Mountain Lion?

When running Snow Leopard I enjoyed using Preview with my HP C7280 All-in-One Scanner/Printer. I could place several items on the glass plate and Preview would then carry out a "preview scan". The superior edge detection software contained in Preview would recognise that there was more than one item on the scanner glass and put a marquee rectangle around each object (even separate images in a magazine page). I could de-select objects if I wanted to at this point to avoid scanning them, or I could opt to scan.
Preview would then scan all selected items in one go outputting a separate file for each one. No need to re-scan and select the next object. Preview would do the lot in one go! This was fantastic for saving time for me.
Preview really 'kicked the crap' out of my PC at work. The best the scanning software on the PC could was to auto-detect a single item.* So if I have a lot to do, I have to preview scan and then save/scan each item individually to achieve the same result.
All this changed when I updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. The scanning is nothing like as effective and time saving as before. Preview just scans the whole glass plate straight to a file irrespective of what is on it, no preview scan and no object edge detection whatsoever; not even a single object like on my old PC at work. Absolute rubbish!
I really want to restore the functionality I had before. So I wonder, is it best to revert my iMac to Snow Leopard, or can I achieve this another way? I don't necessarily want to abandon Mountain Lion - but I will if I have to.
Is it possible to restore the Snow Leopard version of Preview whilst keeping Mountain Lion? Or maybe download the Lion version from somewhere instead - assuming that the Lion version still has same functionality as the Snow Leopard version?
*Even this is better than what Preview does since I updated to Mountain Lion

It's either that or finding other software for your scanning needs. For example, Image Capture comes with OS X, VueScan 9.2.09, ExactScan Pro 2.24.
Alternatively, partition your hard drive and install Snow Leopard on another volume.
To resize the drive do the following:
1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive. Use the Snow Leopard installer DVD to install Snow Leopard on your new volume.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss. Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

If you can find an iPhone running iOS5 and those are the specs for iOS5, there is no reason it should not work.
If you want a more current version of iOS or a more current device, a Windows computer is always an option at significantly less cost.
Granted, there is no requirement to have a computer to use an iPhone.
