I can't use my iBook

Hi all,
I previously made a post " my ibook wont startup - whatever i do!!" and explained that the only thing effective that i could do was boot into single user mode. I did this and attempted to delete some files so i could do an archive and install (as i had v little space on hd).
FIRSTLY, I have tried to delete files by typing "su" and by typing "chflags nouchg, noschg <name of file here>" and then "y" for overide but it tells me that it is a read only file. Can someone please give me link to a good tutorial on how to use single user mode? ie how to get into my user account and delete files in there (my user account id the administration account).
SECONDLY, I just tried to boot into verbose mode and it stopped. here are the previous lines so that you may be able to tell me what is going on:
Creating RAM Disk for syslogd
hdik: IOKit timed out waiting for driver to load: error e0002d6.
hdik: attach fail: error e0002f0
syslogd: cannot create /var/run/syslog: Read-only file system
syslogd: child pid 113 exited with return code 1
Creating RAM Disk for Crashreporter
hdik:IOKit timed out waiting for driver to load: error e0002d6.
Launching Crash Reporter
com.apple.SecurityServer: database /vardb/CodeEquivanceDatabase opened READONLY (R/W failed errno=30)
com.apple.SecurityServer: error writing entropy file /var/db/SystemEntropyCache
com.apple.SecurtiyServer: Entering service
This is where the system has now stopped. no keystroke changes anything and all i can do is force the computer to turn off by holding the power button down.
If anyone has some advice on how i can fix my computer without completely erasing hd i would be very very much appreciative.

How big is your external hard drive? Is it a FireWire hard drive? You might plug in your external FireWire hard drive to the iBook then startup from the Tiger install disk and install Mac OS X 10.4 on the external hard drive. That way, when you startup from the external hard drive, hopefully your iBook's hard drive will appear on the Desktop and you can copy some of your files out of the iBook to the external hard drive.

  • Can I use my ibook as a mac mini interface?

Hello all, I currently have an ibook G4 2004 , I need to get more hard drive space and need a faster machine to handle some of the more complex applications I've been running. I was wondering if I invested in a mac mini, would I just be able to connect this to myG4 via USB and just use the ibook keyboard and screen to use my mac mini?
I am sure this is all fairly obvious and I'd imagine that this would be possible, would there be any advantages to doing this as opposed to investing in a new system altogether? Any input would be much appreciated.

+wondered If I could just use my laptop as a screen and transfer all the information to the mac mini and run off of the mac mini.+
This question comes up about once a week.
No Mac is designed to replace a monitor and keyboard.
You can, however, connect two Macs with an ethernet cable and using that network connection do screen sharing. But you probably won't like the results for anything except very casual use.
You'd still have to use a real monitor, keyboard, and mouse to setup your new Mini.
Once set up, you'd run a VNC program like Chicken of the VNC on your old Mac, and you'd have Screen Sharing active on your Mini. This would let you control your Mini with the iBook's screen, keyboard, and trackpad.
But as I said, you probably won't like the results. Budget for a monitor.

The hard drive died. What type and manufacrure do I need. Is it a Serial, ATA or IDE? What sizes can I use 40G, 60G, 80G, or 100G?
    Thanks for your help.

but if your ibook was made before 2003 the limit for hard drives is 128GB any mac made before 2003 has this limit.

  • Can I use My Ibook G4 as a Second Monitor For My Mac Mini G4

    Hi
I wonderd if theres any way of being able to use my 14'' Ibook G4 as a second monitor for my Mac Mini G4? I already have a Samsung SyncMaster 913n. Is there any way of doing this by firewire using both monitors, if not what cables would I need?
    Thanks

There is a application called Synergy which you may find useful. It allows the keyboard, mouse and clipboard to be shared across computers, and even different operating systems. It's not strictly what you have asked for as each computer still runs it's applications (and operating system) separately, meaning you can not drag windows between the screens, but by allowing you to copy and paste between the computers, and seamlessly slide your mouse and keyboard input between them you may get the effect you desire. Oh, and it is free and open-source, so why not give it a whirl?
You will need to connect the machines with a TCP/IP network, which can be done either with an ethernet patch cable, or alternatively as you suggest, using FireWire - these two articles may assist you in setting that up: IP over FireWire in Panther and Tiger.
As a point of note, a commercial program, MaxiVista allows exactly what you are looking for under Microsoft Windows.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I use my ibook as the external keyboard for my Mac Mini?

Using a firewire to connect the two units. Or do I need to buy a separate keyboard to use with the Mini?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It seems to me that while you CAN connect the mini to your iBook with FW (or ethernet) and run the mini from the iBook's keyboard and display, the performance of the combined system will be the poorest common factor between processor speed and data transfer speeds. In other words, while you will be able to run the mini and it's software, the combined iBook/mini system not going to perform all that well, and aside from possibly giving you access to software your iBook wouldn't be able to run (depending on what processor, speed and RAM it has), using a mini that way is typically not all that cost-effective.
Keyboards are cheap (I bought a $29.95 wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo from WalMart to use with mine at home), and a display need not cost much at all if you don't already have one.

  • Can I use my iBook in Europe with no converter?

I know with my iPod, all I need is a plug adaptor as the power charger does both USA and Europe so no need to carry a converter.. are these older Dual USB G3 iBooks the same in that respect? All I need is the plug adaptor but no converter as the power charger unit does it for me?

Yes, the iBook is the same.
The Apple iBook's power adapter is designed to be used worldwide. All you need is the outlet plug adapter.

  • Can I use an Ibook G3 screen to replace mine?

I have an Ibook 12" G4 1.33 GHz and I have read conflicting opinions on this topic.
I took apart my Display and it is an LG LP121X04-C2-K2.
    Thanks,

You can but, if I were you, I wouldn't. Most of these antiglare protectors introduce a VAST image quality degradation, particularly on such a hi-res device. I also recommend the thread at http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365496 for more info.

  • Can i use my ibook cd to install tiger on my g3 ibook?

Just wondering if I can install Tiger from the install cds that came with my iBook G4. I have 512 mb of RAM on my iMac G3 500 MHz, and I'm currently running OS 9.2.2. I'll have to install from my iBook via a firewire.
    Thank you!
    Alison

I doesn't matter if you physically have both machines or not. The license is to install it only on the Mac that it shipped with.
And... when you sell a computer you should include the original install media (and license keys) for whatever software you include on the hard drive.

  • How can I use a remote CD/DVD drive to install MacOS 10.4?

    Hello,
My old iBook G3 needs to be updated to MacOS 10.4 however its CD drive doesn't work. I have an retail copy of Tiger and have put it in my iBook G4 but when I open the installer it doesn't allow me to choose my mounted iBook G3 (which I have connected through a wireless network). How can I use my iBook G4's CD/DVD drive to install MacOS 10.4 on my iBook G3?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

'Making matters worse' seems a bit excessive, since it isn't that uncommon for an optical drive to die in an otherwise perfectly good machine. (Ask parents with inquisitive kids, for example!
Plus, this is an iBook, & I don't believe OWC sells replacement internal drives for them, only for PowerBooks, so it doesn't seem that unreasonable to suggest that he first try something that has a good chance of doing what he wants to do, which is install Tiger on the iBook, rather than suggest anything that may or may not be appropriate for his situation.
Since he already has purchased the DVD, the most he is risking with the TDM approach is the cost of a 6 pin to 6 pin FW cable, which he still should find useful no matter what else he decides to do. If nothing else, it shouldn't cost anymore than the exchange of the DVD for CD's, right?

  • I am confused about something.  How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro?  I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad.  The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it.  My iBook library does not show up in iTunes.

I am confused about something.  How do I read a book on my MacBook Pro?  I can't find the iBook app anywhere, which is what I use on my iPad.  The book I want to read is in my iTunes but I can't click on it.  Some of my iBooks show up in my iTunes but they are "grayed" out.  The only books that respond in iTunes are audiobooks and that's not what I'm looking for.  Is this a stupid question?

Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro.  If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook.  Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad.  Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

  • Can I author an iBook for my own family use?

    Hi -
I'm dabbling with iBooks Author.  I'm not intending to submit the book to the iBook Store.  I just want to share it with family members for their iPads.
I created a short tale with some text and images - 15 pages, 3 chapters long - and Published it as ".iba" right out of the app.  When I sent it to my wife's iPad (I used email and DropBox), the TOC was there, chapters were listed, and clicking moved you through the book,  but all the pages were blank. No text or images.
Have I misunderstood how this app can be used?  Is this ONLY for producing books for sale?
    TIA some experienced explanation.
    j2

The file used when authoring via iBooks Author is .iba. The distributed file is .ibooks. You should first Preview to your own iPad to test, so that any issues such as missing content can be dealt with.
You can distribute to family etc without goint thru the Store, using iBooks Author's 'Share/Send via email' menu or 'Share/Export', saving off an ibook, then uploading that to your own server or DropBox, as an example.

  • Can I use my Ipod on my PC and on my Ibook ?

Can I use my Ipod on my PC and on my Ibook ? At home I use my Ibook, at work I use a PC, running on XP prof.
Can I use both computers without changing something on my Ipod.
I'm a little bit scared to trie it, you never know what happens...
    thanks in advance,

Macs will read Windows-formatted iPods, no problem.
However, Windows PCs won't ready Mac-formatted iPods without extra software, such as xPlay (www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/). So if you want to continue to use the Mac as your iPod's 'home base' you'll need this extra software to use the iPod on both platforms.

  • I have an apple id but ı can not use it for sign in to itunes connect account while publishing my ibook document. Why ı can not login? What can ı do to figure out this problem?

I have an apple id but ı can not use it for sign in to itunes connect account while publishing my ibook document. Why ı can not login? What can ı do to figure out this problem?

As note already on the iBA forum [ AppleID for ibooks publishing ], you need two IDs. You can't use your developer ID.
If you already signed up for books with that ID, you need to talk to Apple to straighten things out.

  • Can you use an itunes gift card to purchase ibooks?

Can you use an itunes gift card to purchase ibooks on your iphone? If yes, how? When I attempt to purchase a book it automatically appears that it will automatically charge my stored card.
    Thanks!

To use an iTune Gift Card to buy books...
Open iTunes on your computer and click on the iTunes Store.
You'll need to be signed in...
Click on the little House icon in the dark gray bar across the top. (or Shift+Command+H)
On the right side of the page under Quick Links click Redeem and enter your code.
Then it will show your credit balance in the dark gray bar across the top next to your account name to let you know how much you have to spend.
Then as you buy books, it'll deduct from the credit balanace.
There is a distinction between, iTunes Gift Card and Apple Gift Card.
Apple Gift Card: can be used to purchase Apple hardware and accessories at any Apple Retail Store, the Apple Online Store...
iTunes Gift Card: To give music, movies, TV shows, apps, books, or anything on the iTunes Store, the App Store, the iBooks Store or the Mac App Store, select an iTunes Gift Card
