I can't wipe my hard drive in OS X install page

So, I've been having trouble with my 2011 Macbook and backed up all of my files because the hard drive was failing. I got a new hard drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard to get the laptop up and running, but once I started transferring files over, it froze, so I rebooted it and got stuck in the OS X Maverick install window because that's what started my previous incident. So, I'm back to square one.
I have my files backed up, so all I want to do is wipe my hard drive completely and reinstall Snow Leopard again, but my hard drive will not erase in Disk Utility, or when I ask for a repair, it will say the hard drive is ok, but I can't get out of the installer because something is actually corrupted and will not unmount, eject, or anything. I can't install OS X either, and nothing seems to be working.
Any suggestions?

You should be able to boot from your Snow Leopard CD by holding down the C key when restarting.
Run Disk Utility from the CD to erase your drive.
Install Snow Leopard then update to 10.6.8
Combo updater: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update v.1.1 - 1.09 GB
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
I suggest that you partition your drive using Disk Utility so you can install Mavericks on it's own partition. That way if there are issues you can revert to your Snow Leopard partition. Make the Snow Leopard partition small. You only need a bit of free space to use the drive as a boot drive.
Move your data over to Mavericks. I would be very careful about moving your data over.
Once you are happy with your Mavericks install, you can decide if you want to keep the Snow Leopard partition.

  • How can I wipe my hard drive and restore to factory settings without the use of the original OS CD?

I have a 2010 MacBook and I need to wipe the hard drive and restore to factory settings.
The problem is that even though I have the original disc, the CD drive has stopped functioning and will reject any disc put into it.
Therefore, is there another method to do this without the CD?

Not very easily.  To restore to factory software you need the original installation DVD (CDs).
If you have another Mac which is the same make and model so that those installation DVD (CDs) would work, you can use a Firewire cable between the 2 Macs and then put your Mac to be reset into Target mode and use the other Mac to install the software.  However I suspect that is unlikely.

  • How can I wipe my hard drive and clean install Mountain Lion?

Hi I have a 21.5 inch mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion, I want to wipe my hard drive and clean install Mountain Lion. I dont want all my stuff back, just photos and music, the rest I'll reinstall my self. I also dont have a exteranl harddrive. only two USB's one 2 GB and the other 8 GB. How do I do this? And I dont want to pay for mountain lion again. Thanks!

I made my partition and am currently reinstalling mountain lion to put on my flash drive. I'm using Lion disk maker 2 thats compatible with mountain lion. I'm doing it right, correct?

  • Can I wipe my hard drive without reinstalling Mountain Lion?

I'm running a digital version of Mountain Lion and my Mac is still running fine, but my hard drive is almost full. I'm an animation student, so I'm thinking of wiping it to get off all the junk that I don't really need for school, but I don't want to have to reinstall my OS. Is that possible?
On another note, my disk drive doesn't burn CDs anymore. It still plays DVDs fine, but the last time I tried to burn a CD it said it couldn't "calibrate the laser power needed" or something...Is there a way I can fix that? I think it just needs to be cleaned out...

If you can't run Mavericks, you can't run Mountain Lion because they have the same hardware requirements.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.

  • AMD A10-5750M Can't Wipe The Hard Drive!

I am having a problem downgrading from Windows 8 to windows 7 Ultimate 64bit version. I have tried changing the (EUFI) settings disabling secure boot. I tried Wiping the hard drive didn't work. So if anyone can help I would appreciate it a lot. I have an A10-5750M overclocked at 3.1GHz Elite quad core processor 8Gb Ram and 750Gb hard drive. I recenlty upgraded to windows 8.1 preview because I can deal with that better than windows 8, but I'd prefer windows 7 ulitimate 64bit version. Any help is welcome.

Additionally, as the hard drive is partitioned as GPT, you must boot the computer using the "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or "UEFI - Internal CD/DVD drive" in the "F9" boot menu. If "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or something to that effect doesn't exist in the boot menu, please post a screen shot and/or descibe the listed boot options.

  • What is the best way to wipe my hard drive for a clean install?

I've been having a lot of insane issues with my iMac like my Dock icons not staying, email messages showing in Mail but when I click on them I can't see any text, Spotlight finding emails and files that don't show on my hard drive, etc.
I've decided that I just want to wipe the whole thing clean and start from scratch. What is the best way that I can do this to make sure that absolutely no data is left on the drive and I am totally starting from scratch?

    Hi David Hamilton1;
I guess that all depends on how critical your data is in relation to how much time you want to spend doing the erasure. Those higher level erasure options can take a significant amount of time to complete. Personally I don't have anything on my Mac that I think is worth more time then a simple erasure even if that does leave it some what recoverable. To me it seems some people are going overboard on this issue.

Here is a link for burning a bootable DVD before you install it.  Install package removes it self from the App folder after installtion is complete.

  • Can I wipe my hard drive clean without the Snow Leopard CD?

I've searched and have seen some mixed reviews. This is my issue:
I have a Macbook Pro from 2007. If you need any other info, let me know. It had Tiger on it for the longest time, until I bought an iPod touch that needed snow leopard to run. So I upgraded it a few years ago...I bought the disc at the store and upgraded it. Now that I am out of college, I don't use my laptop a whole lot besides just the usual internet surfing and things. Well now I am getting ready to start a new job that I will be on it all the time and use Excel and other programs. Over the years, I have things on it that I really don't want/need anymore. I would like to wipe it clean of everything and start fresh, only problem is that I can't find the snow leopard cd, or any other cd's that came with the laptop. From what I am reading I seem to need the snow leopard disc to do this? Can I go out and buy a new disc? Do I need the disc to do this?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

You said "Do I need any of the discs that came with the Macbook Pro?"
So I said thems referring to the disks inyour question.

  • How can I clean my hard drive?

    Hello everyone,
My macbook is now four years old and the last wipe is a while ago. My hard drive is quite ful and I don't really know what I can delete and what not. There's also 26 GB in Movies which don't appear nowhere. I really would like to get rid of them but don' know how. So, is there an application like CleanMyMac that is of any use or how can I wipe the hard drive myself (after I saved all my data)?
    Thank you for your help,

  • HT203167 i recently had to wipe my hard drive to upgrade os. now i can't find my music. how do i get it back?

I recently had to wipe my hard drive to upgrade os. Now i have no music in my itunes library. How do I get the music back?

If you have lost your previously purchased iTunes data, you can Download Past Purchases - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519.
If for any reason you can't do the above -  Contact the iTunes Store - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/.  At the bottom left, you will see a "contact support" link.  Just select it, then select "iTunes Store", and the select "purchases, Billing and Redemption".   Follow the on screen instructions.
They will recommend in the future, you back up your data, but usually grant a one time "re-grant" of all your purchases.
Music that was not purchased from the iTunes store, would need to be re-import into iTunes from the discs.

  • How do I wipe my hard drive clean so I can sell my iMac G3?

I have an iMac G3 (model #5521) with OS 9 and need to know how to wipe the hard drive clean so I can safely sell it. I tried following the advice someone gave to an earlier post, but was unable to find the security screen for the Zero All Data option or even Disk Utility on the Installer menu for that matter. I have these discs: Software Install, Software Restore and Apple Hardware Test. If someone would be so kind as to walk me through the process step by step, I would greatly appreciate it. I know very little about Apple computers.

You need to boot to the Software Install CD-ROM that came with the iMac. To do so boot the computer off the CD-ROM by holding down the C key. Once it boots up open the Utilities folder displayed in the open CD-ROM window. Open Drive Setup. Open the Functions menu. Select the option labeled Options. In that window select the Zero All Data option checkbox. Open the initialization menu. Select initialization options. You want to make sure the iMac formats its hard drive in HFS+ or Mac OS Extended. Once you've selected all the initialization options click the Initialize button. It will then format the hard drive & check it for bad sectors. Then reinstall the Mac OS. Then it should be ready to sell.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

You can't unless you have a bootable system on an external drive you can use. Otherwise, you need either the original disc that came with your computer or a retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD. The latter contains 10.6.3, so your model must be capable of booting from that or an earlier version of OS X.
You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

Hello- My laptop needs the OS X recovery run. Can I download the software directly to a thumb drive without affecting my desktop unit? The Geek Squad said they need to wipe my hard drive and re-install the operating system. Thanks.

They already damaged you Mac by fooling with the BootCamp partition without knowing what they were doing. I wouldn't suggest haveing them help you do anything.
Here is the article that describes the Recovery HD: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
First, see if you can boot into the Recovery HD. Restart and hold down cmd-r until you see the gray screen. It should boot into Recovery. If your Mac shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, it will boot into Internet Recovery if it cannot boot into the Recovery HD on the hard drive.
They should have tried this at the store.
