I can't write or access external HD with iMovie

I've read that some have success and others have not. I am one of the others who have not.
I'm recently new to iMovie and external HDs. I bought an external once I got iLife 08 so I can do some video editing. I want to have all my video on the external. That is no problem, I can easily transfer, but I can't write directly, or access my files from iMovie. I can import from external, but then it just creates an event on my boot drive and totally defeats the purpose of saving and working from the external.
What is wrong? I can see the drive in iMovie, but it has a little exclamation mark on the icon. I can't find what the exclamation error means.
I have an iMac, running to external via firewire, and the drive is FAT32. Do I need to reformat? Or does iMovie not allow direct write or editing from an external

FAT32
iMovie should not be used with a FAT32 disk; if you haven't put anything on the drive which you can't move off the drive and don't need to use it with a PC, you should use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to reformat it to Mac OS Extended regardless of what you intend to use the drive for.

  • I can read but I can't write to an external drive - changing permissions

I can read but I can't write to an external drive.
How do I change permissions? None of the helps here on the discussions have helped.
Why would a computer company let me read files but not write? Hahaha. This is insane.
I have to write computer files for work. It's a project due this morning.
Man, I'm going to have to go back to PC.
Just need the compter to write files.

If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Airport Extreme with External HD with iMovie Events. Can't see them!

Here I go again. I just bought an Airport Extreme. I moved my External HD with iMovie Events from my MBP via FW to my Airport Extreme. I can see the partitions in Finder and the Events folder but when I open iMovie, I can't see my events in the library. Since I didn't change the names of the partitions I was hoping for seamless access. That is not the case. I can see the Disks but they have YELLOW exclamation marks on them. They don't seem to be valid. What gives. Looks like I have some more work to do.
Any ideas. Thought this would be easier.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • Can't sign in on external monitor with MBP after Yosemite upgrade

After Yosemite upgrade, when I turn on my MBP, I can't sign in using external monitor with MBP, always could before Yosemite.  Blurred image of my wallpaper shows on monitor, can move arrow on external screen but sign-in only shows up on my computer screen, with no arrow.  Since there is no arrow on the computer screen, and no sign in box on the external monitor, I have to unplug the external video to sign in on the computer, then plug in the monitor again.  Any ideas?

    NOWEK,
Thanks for this suggestion, but so far no joy. I have zapped the PRAM, jammed the Frabitz and smashed the Gafrogsnicker, all to no avail. When the MBP restarts I get a blurred image (extreme "vibrancy") on the external monitor, but no images of the login accounts to choose from or the other options. However, on the MBP screen I get all that. The keyboard and mouse respond, but just doesn't display on the external monitor. This is of interest to me because I have the MBP down in a credenza with other related gear and the external monitor and keyboard up on my desk. It's true I don't have to do this often, but still, it just started this aggravation with Yosemite. Thanks for trying to help.

  • I can't write to a external disk in my MacBook Air

Hi, I have a (Samsung M3 Station External Hard drive (1.5T) ) and i want to use it  in my MacBook Air, but i'm having some problems with it. The MACBook Air recognizes de disk and I can read the information but is impossible to copy or  write  any information on this disk.
Is there any chance to use an external drive whith MAC computers?

Your external disk is probably formatted with the NTFS file system (Windows).
OS X can't write to the NTFS file system.
If the external disk will only be used with your MBA save any data you don't want to lose and use Disk Utility to re-format it with an OS X supported file system.
If it needs to work with both OS X and Windows machines then FAT32 or exFAT are the only compatible file systems.
There is third party software available that will allow OS X to write to an NTFS file system but I have no experience with that so don't know how well it works.

  • Suddenly can't write to an external hard drive that I have been using consistently

I have been using a WD 1 terabyte external hard drive to transfer movie files between 2 MBP's and suddenly I cannot write any files to the HD.  The error message is that the external hard "cannot be modified" if I try to add any files.  I have tried the same hard drive on another MBP and it works fine and I can write to the hard drive (with the aid of Paragon NTFS for Mac OS).  I have Paragon NTFS on my computer as well and have been able to write to the hard drive previously. I spoke to Western Digital phone support and told them the problem and noted that the icon for the hard drive is grey with a clock on my computer and is orange on the other MBP.  They explained that the icon change was due to Time Machine on my computer.  I currently have Time Machine turned off.
Of note, I recently upgraded my internal hard drive on my computer to a WD 500 GB internal drive.  Not sure if this will make a difference.  Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Found the issue.  When I changed the internal hard drive, most softward transferred over, but not all.  I had to reinstall the Paragon NTFS and I was then able to write to the external hard drive.  That seemed to solve the problem.

  • Can I boot from an external drive with a "Virtual CD"

I just purchased a Hitachi LifeStudio external hard drive for use as my Time Machine backup. When I plugged it in to my MacBook running 10.6.4, I realized that it had one of those "Virtual CDs" that contained the manufacturers crapware, similar to Western Digital's MyWare or whatever its called. It shows up in disk utility as an actual separate disk and not just another partition that can be wiped.
I reformatted the drive using GUID and and created 3 HFS+ Journaled partitions. One was going to be for the 10.6 installer, one for the 10.6 boot, and one for my time machine backup. I restored a 10.6 install dvd disk image I created using disk utility to the 10.6 installer partition (with erase destination checked) then option booted my mac and the partitions did not show up. The only thing I could see was my internal hard drive.
I have done this many times before and it has always worked so Im trying to figure out what Im doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is that the "Virtual CD" that Hitachi put on this external drive is stopping the Mac from seeing the bootable partitions I created. I even went into system preferences>startup disk and blessed the 10.6 install partition. That didn't work either, the computer just booted to my internal drive.
So my questions are. Is it because of this "Virtual CD" that I can't boot from my external drive? If so, is there a way around it? I already searched their web site and emailed their tech support asking for a firmware update to remove the virtual cd.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's a known issue. You've already referred to the issue with WD systems. WD has a long list of products that are either not compatible with Macs or won't boot a Mac.
There are practically no problems with bare drives, but once installed in an enclosure there is no guarantee that the package will function as a bootable device. This is especially the case if the manufacturer uses some sort of "virtual" scheme intended for using the device as a sort of one button backup device.
External drives don't have to specifically say anything about being Mac bootable or compatible. It's up to the consumer to verify compatibility and usability.

  • Can I install Tiger on external drive with OS9 on internal?

I bought and plan to install OS X 10.4.3, but will continue to use OS 9.2.2 about 95% of the time because I can't afford to update all 3rd-party software at this time, so I want to start up in 9.2.2 usually. Can I install 10.4.3 on a partition of my external HD with firewire and leave 9.2.2 on my internal HD, then pick a start-up OS by a key combination or such? How should I do it, and what problems might I encounter? To partition my external HD should I use OS 9.2.2, the original 9.0 CD, or the new 10.4.3 DVD?
I have a Power Mac G4 (AGB Graphics) with an internal 10 GB HD and an almost-empty external 120 GB firewire HD (Iomega). Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes you can do that, though I'm not too sure that Iomega's firmware is up to date to do it. Be sure that any data you have on the Iomega is backed up elsewhere before attempting it. Some Firewire drives without up to date firmware from the manufacturer may become invisible and unusable after a software update on Mac OS X 10.3 or later. Also an AGP PowerMac needs its firmware updated while booted from Mac OS 9 before installing Mac OS X 10.2 or later:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
That said, if after testing you find it does work, you can switch booting between both drives using the Option key booting as described in the Startup Manager article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
Leave OS 9.2.2 on your internal, and 10.4 on your external. That will be a lot easier than partitioning. Some information I wrote for others which can help you on your migration to Mac OS X is provided in this link below:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
If you really want to partition, be aware that only third party software is available to partition without erasing the entire drive, and you'll want to make sure additional partitions that will boot Mac OS 9 have Mac OS 9 drivers installed as my link above states. Whatever you do, be sure you have at least two copies of your data at all times:

  • Can we bind a single external table with multiple files in OWB 11g?

    Hi,
I wanted to ask if it is possible to bind an external table with multiple source files at same or different locations? Or an external table has to be bound to a single source file and a single location.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Ann,
Can you please help me out by telling me the steps to accomplish this. Right click on the external table in project tree, from the menu choose Configure,
then in opened Configuration Properties dialog window right clock on Data Files node and choose from menu Create -
you will get new record for file - specify Data File Name property

  • Using an external drive with iMovie HD

I just received and formatted my external drive. At first I chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Zero out data. When I got info (⌘+I) of the drive afterwards, it had 79 MB being used, journalling? So I then Erased it and chose Mac OS Extended and now it shows 59 MB as being used, whatever for IDK.
Does it matter which format I use for working with iMovie, journaled or not?
In the Get Info window there is an Ignore Ownership option. I know it doesn't need to be ticked when an OS is going to be loaded on the drive but am wondering if I should tick it since the drive is only going to be used mainly for iMovie projects and no OS is going to be loaded.
Should I tick Ownership or leave it off?
I have iMovie projects that have not been edited yet and a iDVD project on my internal drive.
Can I just drag and drop or copy and paste the iMovie projects to the external drives icon and delete the project from my internal drive to create a little more space? Is it simple as that?
Same thing with the iDVD project after archiving it first? Copy/Paste,Drag/Drop and delete.
I've got a backup drive but use SuperDuper! so I don't have any experience with using 'scratch?' drives.
I've read elsewhere on this Discussion site that the finished iMovie projects need to be on the internal drive in order to transfer to and edit in iDVD.
How and where do I move the project to from the external? Drag/Drop or Copy/Paste to my Desktop then Drag/Drop, Copy/Paste to iDVD, or some other way?
    Thanks.

I am not sure zeroing out data on a SATA drives "marks" bad blocks/sectors. I think this may have only been on SCSI drives. I couldn't find a reference that it behaves this way on a SATA drive. Thus the only advantage being that it more securely erases files.
The click and hold works the same on a PB!

  • Using an external HD with Imovie

    Hi everyone,
I am working on about 3 movies at the same time. All are stored on my external hard drive.
A few weeks ago, i tried to apply an effect and it didn't work. It said it was rendering the clip, but then the effect would just disappear. What made it strange was that ALL the other effects worked just fine, just the one I wanted to use--which was slow/reverse clip.
I called Apple to find out what is going on here, and the tech had me move the project from the ext HD to the Mac HD. Then it worked just fine. A few days later i went to work on another project that is stored on the external HD, and i was trying to use b&W, but it was not working. The little pic on the clip would disappear after it was finished rendering. I had to undo to get it back.
My question is, does this mean that everytime i want to work on a particular movie, i will have to move it to the mac drive for it to work properly? I guess it's ok if i have to, but i was wondering if there is a way to stop this from happening.
    Thank you in advance.

I know you're right about something being fishy--it doesn't make sense to me not being able to use some effects just because the projects are saved to the ext HD.
Yes, my ext. hd is hooked up via firewire. Is that a problem?
I don't know if the drive is formatted for Mac OS Extended. Can you explain more on checking it with Disk Utility? I'm new to these things! (I am a previous PC owner--though the HD was never used with my PC.)
If it is NOT formatted correctly, do i have to move the projects off of it and then format it? You're going to have to help me with that too!
    Thanks for the help.
