I can type in a chat, but can't read either what I type or what anyone else types back to me. Any suggestions?

I get a blank box. When I type and hit enter (or send), I still have a blank box. People can type back to me, but I get nothing. I have no problems logging on to iChat from either my husband's Mac or my iPad, only having problems on this Mac. Using iChat 4.0.9. Mac OS.X 10.5.8. It's been this way for about a year now, and the Mac store can't seem to be able to solve it.
Does anyone else have this problem?
I've tried downloading AOL Instant Messenger directly (that's the screen name I am using) and it doesn't work. Do I need to uninstall iChat and reload it? How would I get it once I delete it?
I'll take any suggestions.

Hi,
If your AIM valid Screen Name happens to be an Apple ID then it is likely that only if it is one Ending in @mac.com will it work in Leopard and iChat 4.
This is because when Apple went to iCloud they also changed the way iChat 6 and later Mesages logs in.
Both these version also contact Apple and this then allows the AIM Servers to "read" the password.
This Dual Login does not happing in earlier versions which means the Apple Servers are not contacted and then the AIM servers are blocked from checking the password.
It also means you cannot use an @me.com or @icloud.com ending name in the AIM for Mac App, the AIM Settings login page or login to AIM express on any Browser on any device.
For the Text not showing try this test change first.
Open iChat.
Go to the View Menu
Select the Style option and change it from Balloons to anything else.
Actually Quit iChat and restart the app.
Does iChat see the text when not using Balloons ?
If so you need to reinstall the whole App. The Balloons Style is actually run from a Plugin but you can only get it by reinstalling the whole app.

Basically tick in your Original Install DIsk.
Select the Option Installs foldder and launch the OptionalInstals.mpkg
Pick out iChat only and Install
Download and Install (over what you have) the COMBO Installer for OS X 10.5.8 (THIS is needed to update iChat to the corerect version of OS X 10.5.8)

I have been researching the exchange message loss problem on other forums, but not seen a link to browser as yet. The message loss problem we have here is in a 32bit PB.

Apparently it's related to the Firefox plug in.
This isn't exactly a solution but more of a way to avoid opening PDFs with Firefox's plug in.
1. Highlight "Tools" from the Menu Bar in the top left of the screen (or click "Options" if using the Firefox Compact Menu)
2. Select to "Options
3. Select "Applications"
4. Look for "Adobe Acrobat Document" under Content Type and to the right under Action select "Use Adobe Reader (default)" instead of the using Adobe Acrobat in Firefox
5. Open a test PDF. It should open in it's own window now.
Again, not a complete solution but something that'll at least let you scroll with PDFs open.

Thank you so much for providing the details about the duplicate song issue you are experiencing. It sounds like you would like to remove the duplicate songs that will not play on your iPhone, but when you connect it to iTunes, iTunes only shows you one copy of the song on your iPhone.
In this situation, I recommend deleting the individual songs that do not play directly from your iPhone. I found the steps to do this on page 61 of the iPhone User Guide (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf):
Delete a song from iPhone: In Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete.

It is possible that you clicked "Block Images" in the right click context menu while trying to save an image.
Check the image exceptions: Tools > Options > Content: Load Images: Exceptions

Great question. The line access fees for the account are a set amount and can not be changed unless you are going from a basic to a smartphone or vice versa. If you are wondering about adding the month to month discount if you are out of contract Ann154 has provided great information on how to access and add the feature.

The attachment bar at the bottom of incoming emails has no ''paperclip'' to select and open attached documents

If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key, that should make the menu bar appear.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

A few of the cites where this occurs are: healthcare.gov; united.com; genetaylorsrentals.com. I have brought up these sites and logged in using my laptop and going through other ISPs (friend's home using Cox Communications connection (Newport News VA) and at George Mason District Public Library (Fairfax County VA). I am located in Annandale, VA. Has anyone else experienced this problem; do you have a solution?

Which Anti Virus are you using? Do you have the issue with multiple browsers?
I experienced login issues with some sites when using Avast AV with the WebRep plugin enabled. I've had to disable the plugin to be able to complete the sign in process.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me and many others. Tech support returned most of my money but not all of it. Figure that one out! It is clear no music is downloaded (or in queue), it is clear an unknown error message is produced, and it is clear we, the consumer, are still being charged anyway. Will Apple require a credit card from its customers and alienate those that do not wish to use a credit card? Will Apple insult its customers and make silly suggestions such as 'Use an iTunes gift card' in much the same way a forum moderator has already recommended?
I have an idea: Acknowledge the problem publicly (via email, for example) and fix it in a future update. Customers will be more understanding if they know there is a temporary problem and Apple is working hard to fix it. Oh, and return our money, please!
