I Cannot Audio Chat

I am using an AIM account in for Messsages on my MacBook Pro.  I am not able to have audio or video chats or do screen shares with other people that have AIM accounts and use Messages or iChat.  I am able to IM these people though.  I do not have any of these people blocked and they all should be able to communicate with me ways. When ever I try to start a audio chat or anything else the dialogue pops up and says that it is waiting for the other person to accept even if they have already accepted.  A connection is never established.  When ever someone else trys to contact me I receive no alerts eventhoug I am set up to receive them.
Please advise.

  • Can you use audio chat with PCs with microphones?

Is there a simple way to link audio chat between Windows and Mac?

You can audio-chat with a PC user with the latest version of AIM and a mic (on the PC). On the Mac side though, you need to have a camera (camcorder or iSight) plugged in. You cannot audio-chat with a PC AIM user without a camera.
I use my powerbook 1.33 GHz, iChat AV3 and my Sony DV camcorder (FW) to audio-chat with friends using PCs eqipped with AIM and just a mic. No problems at all.

  • "error message cannot start audio chat"

I have an imac g5 1.8ghz with an isight webcam and a 1GB of ram. I am trying to begin an audio conference but get an error message that the computer is not capbable of intiating a multiperson audio chat. All the other buddies have 10.4.5. Any suggestions I thought a G% imac could start a multiperson chat.

    At the PC end
1 PC running windows XP (home or Pro). THIS A MUST
The AIM Standalone Application, currently at ver. 5.9 at this link. AIM (the Site) now call this version Classic and it cannot be Installed On Vista

I have disabled the router's firewall, and still do not know what to do...
what I am more dissapointed with , is that we have macs and cannot video chat, and my roomate has a cheap 400$ PC and can video chat fine...
P.S... my mac and my friend s mac have ALL updates, and are up to date in the OS, and everything.
we have tried deleteing pref files, repairing permissions, etc.
    Thanks in advance!

    Ok,
AIM on the PC has fall back ports so it will default to using ports below 1024 which will not require any specific opening of ports (most likely it will use web browsing or mail ports)
iChat does not have fall back ports so requires that you tell the router to allow (with UPnP) or open ports with Port Forwarding.
AS AIM on the PC and iChat both need to use port 5190 for logging on and File sending UPnP is better as it allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
In a college situation you may also have to check that the IT Guys/LAN has ichat ports open as well as AIM as they actually use different port to Video and Audio chat.
If you change to using UPnP then this has to be allowed as an Exception in the XP or Vista firewall.

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I.  We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat.  I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3.  What am I missing?

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

  • Video & Audio Chat, as well as Screen Sharing Problems.

I have tried many things, and simply cannot figure this out. It's really beginning to frustrate me. My video chat, audio chat, and screen sharing will not work. Any time I attempt to do either of these with anyone, it says they did not respond or connect. I know they are able to video chat, etc. with others, so the problem is on my end. It is probably a simple fix, but I'm just not quite sure where to begin in order to correct the problem.

    Hi
    Re 1) OK
Re 2) You do not have to set the Ports in Leopard. Either Allow All or Allow Specifics and add iChat too the List.
    Re 3) Ok
    Re 4a - c)
We need to know which Netgear. Smart Wizard is what the Start Up page says.
In most Netgears you do not have to set ports per se as the devices is normally doing UPnP by default which allows the apps to open ports when they need them.
Typing 192.168.0.1 into a web browser and hitting enter bring s up a pop up asking for User ID and Password.
The defaults for these are normally admin and password respectively.
You should now see the set up pages starting with the Status page.
If you device has it then UPnP should be lower down the menu on the left.
    Check it is Enabled.
Next go to the WAN set up page.
In here Disable the Port Scan and DOS/SPI feature (it will say one or the other)
Also set it to Allow Internet Pings.
    Save Settings
Re 4d) This means the Netgear is doing DHCP and if it is doing UPnP you need not worry an further about this.
Re 5) OK (no Chax, iGlasses, iChatUSBcam/iUSBCam)
Should be Ok after the changes to the Netgear.

  • IChat video & audio chat with AIM user not working

    Hi all,
I have a mobileme account. A friend has got a new Macbook with 10.5.5 and signed up for an AIM account. We've tried to do video chat (over the internet) with iChat 4 and cannot establish a session in either direction. It gets to the "Starting video chat..." part and then fails, telling us "did not recevie a response from ..."
Audio chat doesn't work for us either.
Video & audio chat works fine locally via Bonjour for us. It's just over the internet (through a NAT router if that matters) that multimedia chat does not function.
    Any ideas?

Yes, I have set the streaming speed to 500 on both mine and her end to no avail. I've also tried port 443, and we also tried using a jabber server (with google talk accounts). I didn't expect the jabber thing to work, as it's free and video/audio/screen sharing use non-trivial bandwidth.
I have not been able to do video, audio, or screen sharing with her at all. But I know these features work, as I have used them on my local wireless network via bonjour.
    Only bonjour...
Do both of us have to be paying customers of MobileMe to get video chat over the internet? It seems like only one should suffice...

  • Audio chat in internet

    Hi,
Please tell me,is it possible to have audio chat in internet using jmf behind firewall and nat

    Hi, prabal
First, I want to clarify. Did you mean PRIVATE IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.1) when you said DUPLICATE?
I am not sure if what you are asking is possible. There are number of issues:
    1. Dial-up bandwitdth might not be enough for your audio. Normally it says 56kbps, but in reality it is much less. The smallest bandwidth consumer is GSM codec. So, you should use it on the first place.
    2. Dial-up means, that your friend will probably get a private IP adddress. In this case, you can still have a chat (but it will be really difficult to manage!!!) if you send your audio to the public address of your friend's gateway. If you directly send stream to a private address, it will be dropped by the first router. Plus, you have to send your stream to the same port, which your friend uses to send his audio to you (this is called Symmetric RTP, take a look at definition here http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/index.php?page=RTP+Symmetric). But dont hope for it to work, when either of you use private addresses.
    3. On the other hand, if your friend gets a public address and you also have a public adderess, then you should not have many problems sending audio both ways, as long as his firewall allows you to.
    4. NATed networks (i.e. the one that uses private ip addresses for its hosts) can be different. There are number of ways to implement NAT, some NATs will easily allow you to send traffic, and some dont.
    5. I think there are some more smaller issues to address to, but cannot recall them at the moment.
Anyway, if you want to implement chat and use IP addresses directly, I believe you will run into tons of problems, when you'll use it through Internet. However, this chat program will probably work very well on a local net (i.e. LAN).
    Best of luck.

  • Audio chats on iChat?

Ok, i have tried to invite people and have been invited to join audio chats (no video) and it says that the other member did not accept. Can iChat just do audio chats, or do you have to do Audio/Video chats? Can anyone help me fix this problem and start audio chatting withfriends?

    Hi Michael
The answer might depend on who you're trying to audio-chat with.
iChat cannot do audio-only chats with PCs and AIM. It can do audio-chats with other macs and with PCs using Trillian.

  • Audio chat between G3 and macbook

    Hi,
trying to get my sisters Imac G3 500 panther to audio chat with the current whitebook. My sister can audio chat between the two using the same router, but cannot connect when the whitebook is being used away from the house. The whitebook can successfully video and audio chat to other computers. is this a setting issue with the imac? The whitebook is a mac.com account while the imac is AIM.
    Thanks,
    Phil.

    Hi,
    Ok.
Can you confirm that they are at the same location ?
I am sure I understand that they are using the same device to get on to the Internet (the BT Home Hub)
    Umm.
Remote IP Invalid (error 4 to those users above 10.4.7 who can view the Logs) is an issue normally only seen at the end that is away from a Leopard user.
It normally points to an Issue at the Leopard end where their iChat (Yours in this case) has a LAN set up where iChat can "see" the internet twice.
Caused by two DHCP servers on the same LAN. Connecting by Ethernet and WiFi to the same router, Same with a neighbour's wifi whilst Ethernet to your own, having Parallels installed and running Sharing the Macs IP and allied to that having Internet Sharing On in System Preferences > Sharing in Leopard.
The BT HOME HUB has been an issue for iChat 2 and iChat 3 users in the past.
Things improved when BT updated the firmware to 6.2.2.6 (AS seen in these Pics for the BT HOME HUB original)
The issue was that they offer a VoIP service (Phones over the Internet) and this uses the same port that ichat uses to send the SIP invite after you send the Visible one.
BT HOME HUB Instructions for Access and Pics
This site is base on doing Port Forwarding.
She does not need or in fact Want to do this but the site does tell her how to access the set up pages.
    Two things.
One from the pics you can see this device can do UPnP
She/they should check this is active. Most likely it is if the MacBook can answer or contact you. (Port Forwarding (or Triggering) or DMZ should not be Enabled.
In the first real BT Pic you will see it list BT Broadband Talk and BT FON
One, if not both, are likely to be something to do with using a phone over the internet. (The FON thing might be a hotspot Wifi thing)
The Setting is most likely controlled in the Advanced > Telephony options (tabs and subtabs)
She will need to check what if any port this says the BT HOME HUB uses.
The Previous version was in fact made by Thomson-Alcatel and these also had a specific issue that other Thomson-Alcatels have/had until it got to the BT own firmware I mentioned.
I am not sure who makes this one and the pics give no clues
Basically the device forces any SIP data to port 5060
This is the port she should look for in the telephony settings and see if anything implies this is what is restricting things.
Hopefully Defcom will also post as he tends to know a bit more about the latest on these.
I hope this helps so far.

  • Cannot AV chat

This is my second post on the same issue, I need some help. Again, my sister has a g4 ibook 1.42 ghz running 10.4.4, her boyfriend has a new intel iMac running 10.4.4, I have 1.8 ghz iMac G5 running 10.4.4. We can all video and audio chat as long as I start the call. They cannot call each other to video or audio chat. They can chat if they only type. We have checked and both have their firewall off, so what else could it be? Please advise, we are pretty much novices when it gets into ports and all those things, so as detailed of help as possible would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Matt

FWIW: I am having the same problem, but with a specific user. I can video/audio chat w/my wife on her iMac, but in trying to chat with a co-worker (who bought using my former PB), we can text chat, but the audio and video attempts fail. The "call" goes through, but when it is "accepted," it briefly indicates that it is "connecting" (spinning cursor), and then gives each of us the same error message: "[sender/receiver name] did not accept the invitation."
I'm wireless via a router and cable, the other person has tried it both at his work network, and at home, wireless via a router. The fact that I can connect to my wife's network tells me it isn't a router issue (at least at my end).

  • Hi all. I want to make audio chat with my brother. I use iChat on my MBP. He uses Gtalk on his windows PC. The problem is that the audio icon is gray. Is there anyway? Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows?

Hi all. I want to make audio chat with my brother. I use iChat on my MBP. He uses Gtalk on his windows PC. The problem is that the audio icon is gray so I cannot start audio chat. Is there anyway? Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows or not? I am confused.

    HI,
You need to satisfy several things along the way
    Account type
You need to have a Jabber or Google mail Account your self.
If you have a Google Mail Account then it needs the "Talk" option Enabled in your Google account Settings ( A Facebook with "Chat" enabled is also a  valid Jabber ID to use in iChat).
    Connection Method
This is about which apps can connect to which apps for Video ro Audio to work.
iChat Video when using a Jabber account is iChat to iChat Only.
iChat connects using a process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
Jabber based Apps if they have  an A/V module connect using protocol called Jingle.
Needless to say Google do their own version of this that is written in to the web Browser Plugin that allows Video Chats (there are PC and Mac versions), and in the PC app called GoogleTalk.
However it is also not that compatible with other Jabber apps.
    See Jingle here
This claims, now, that Google had a hand in writing the Protocol.
Also in the "Clients Supporting Jingle" list many more version of Google products are mentioned with extended info. (it suggests that someone at Google has been editing the page).
Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows or not?
The specific answer to this to be clear is NO.
We are talking about different Apps (or web Browser Plugins) using different Internet Protocols that are not compatible.
The simplest thing is to get the Web Browser Plugin (However there can be issues with the  Flash Plugin)
At one time Google used Flash to do Video Chats and it would seem their Plugin is very close to this part of Flash.
See the Known Issues and the "Google Talk Plugin Disables iSight On Mac" item.
    Options
Use a Web Browser yourself with the Plugin.
Use a Flash Base Site such as MeBeam  (Flash has to be enabled in your Browser and the instructions are simple on the page)
Try to find a Jingle capable Mac Jabber Client (app) ( I have not found one).
