How can I convert my Open Source document files into Word document files? I cannot download Pages since my Macbook Air does not have the most recent software. I downloaded open office to my mac to try and save money. It worked well for a while. Now I get this pop-up message that asks me to "Reopen" and when I select the option, nothing happens. I cannot save my documents anymore and I cannot convert them to word. Help!

Does OpenOffice output Word documents by default or do you have to select it manually?
You have 17 options to save as in Open Office, one of which is .doc  files,  yes it needs to be saved manually.
You may be able to default to DOC, but have not tried same.
Since Open Office is 99% same as Word, I use it, or Word, either one.  Open Office is a bit less buggy than Word 11'

  • I cannot close my mail on Mac Air. How do I resolve the problem?

I cannot close my mail on mac air. There is a message appearing "the Message Design" How do I resolve the problem?.

FYI - clicking the red dot will not Quit an application that can have more than one window open. Mail is such an app. So are Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. The convention for quitting Macintosh Applications is either command-Q on the keyboard or, if you're a mouser - File->Quit. On the other hand System Preferences, Calculator, DiskUtility and Face time are examples of single window Apps where "closing the window" Quitis the program.
The confusion is more common among WinDUHows to Macintosh converts.

  • Cannot install Windows 8 on MacBook Air

I am trying to install Win 8.1 Pro with Boot Camp on a 13 inch MacBook Air (early 2014) with 4G RAM and 256G storage. The machine is a new purchase and the OS was upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite before attempting to use Boot Camp.
I have made a number of attempts at this using both a USB/ISO and DVD in an external drive (non-Apple). All attempts fail at the same point where Windows setup attempts to install on the BOOTCAMP drive. The message is “Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted to NTFS.” There are 4 hard disks listed
      Drive 0 partition 1:EFI   200 MB    173 MB freeSystem
      Drive 0 partition 2        53.4GB      0.0MB free Primary
      Drive 0 partition 3         619MB       0.0MB free Primary
      Drive 0 partition 4:Bootcamp 179.5GB     179.5GB free Primary
On returning to OSX after this the Air works fine and Disk Utility has a Macintosh HD (57GB) and Bootcamp (format is MS-DOS FAT32) (192.7GB).
    I have tried the following:
    1. Ensuring that there was only one external device attached ie the USB created by Boot camp
    2. Swapping the USB port ie have used both USB ports
    3. Trying to install Win from a DVD
    4. Different partition sizes
I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions welcome.
    Bernard

    1. Select Partition4: Bootcamp. You should see advanced Options.
    2. Click Format and convert the partition to NTFS.
    3. Click Next.

  • Cannot install OSX Mavericks on macbook air disk

I am unable to intall Mavericks due to an unknown error. I have tried restarting, using disk utility to perform a repair, but no change. I cannot find any information on why this error is occuring or how to solve it. The macbook air is the latest version. The screenshots below are the initial error and then after clicking 'back' and returning to the screen it shows the error on the right. Any thoughts?

Then the hard drive is corrupted. You will need to erase it then reinstall:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Cannot download Flash Player on Macbook Air

    Hello
I just got a new Macbook Air. Trying to download Flash Player in order to watch youtube. I have allowed internet downloads in System Preferences. It starts downloading and stops at 50% of the download. Then it asks me to close browser windows which are already closed. It just stops here at 50%. What is wrong? I have checked help on both Adobe and Apple. I have followed instructions accurately. Would appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

    Try this alternative:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
It includes the actual installer (so it's a lot larger) whereas the other installer downloads the install data once it starts running, which may be where your problem lies.

  • I cannot eject disk from my MacBook Air

I cannot eject a disk from my MacBook Air.   I've tried many options.    Any suggestions?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Cannot xfer files to across MacBook Air

I am working with very large .mov files from a movie camera.  The files record from the camera onto a SanDisk 480 GB SSD.  I have a MacBook Air 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB RAM.  Running OSX 10.9.4.  I have a WD My Book 4 TB HD.  Since I'm filming out in the middle of nowhere, this is my only option for dumping a huge movie file (420 GB) in order to keep filming.  It is a single file (1 hr long video).  I reformatted the WD My Book for Mac.
However, when I try to drag and drop the .mov file from the SSD to the My Book, I get the error: "The item “blahblah.mov” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format"
After poking through some old threads, I didn't find any that referred to using the MacBook as just the transferring power between an SSD to an external HD.  Please help.  It is currently formatted so MS-DOS (FAT32).  When I try to Erase the drive to switch to Mac OS (Extended), I get an error that the drive cannot be unmounted.  To make things more delicious, the WD website will not load (thus, coming to an Apple forum).

Here's what you need to do with the drive to fix the format. You cannot copy files larger than 2GBs to a FAT formatted drive.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you continue having the unmount error try doing the above booted from the Recovery HD and using Disk Utility from there. First, though, eject the drive before rebooting. Plug it in after the startup.

  • Powerpoint disappearing on MacBook Air?

When I first bought my MacBook Air, I also bought this students package with includes Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I kept all three of them on my dock. Yesterday, at school we needed to put together a powerpoint presentation, and I realised that Powerpoint had disappeared from my dock. In finder, I searched for it in Applicaitons but it wasn't there either. Where has it gone?

    Where has it gone?
Good question. Things don't disappear on their own, so perhaps it was inadvertently moved. Use Spotlight to search for it - Click the Spotlight "magnifying glass" symbol at the upper right of your Mac's menu bar, and type Powerpoint. If you find it, move it back to the Applications folder where it belongs.
If you still can't find it, you'll have to download it again from Microsoft. You will probably need the license key or whatever Microsoft uses to track your purchases.
Please tell me you did not install any so-called "cleaning" utility such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanser" or "MacKeeper" or similarly categorized program...? Garbage utilities like that will make a mess of things.

  • Powerpoint freeze on Macbook Air

I'm a professional presenter to big audiences and PowerPoint constantly freezes on my MacBook Air. Incredible frustrating and about to force me to go back to Windows ;-(  I've seen lots of posts saying that a potential work-around is to reinstall Office and never update the Mac OS. Common consensus is that this problem has been introduced by Apple (not Microsoft)... what's the reality and is there a fix? I'm on 10.9.5. Thanks.
