Does if work if you keep the Ctrl key pressed while dragging the URL?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Finder freezes after dragging a file to the desktop

I am finding the if I try to drag a file to the desktop, it seems to move the icon there, but then freezes up... you can't do anything with finder at all..? I go up to "Force Quit" and select to "Relaunch" Finder, and it resumes normal operation... My work around is to copy and paste things onto the desktop, them trash the original file... a poor solution, but I'm getting by.. any ideas?? Dave

Next I would verify and repair the startup disk using the Disk Utility. This resource should help you do that, named:

Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back up your data and replace the disk. You can’t repair it.

If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done. Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following.
If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. You need to check each file in the list of affected files. Most of the files in the list have aliases in a DamagedFiles folder at the top level of your disk.
If you can replace a file or re-create it, delete it.

If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, then restore your backed-up data.

Drag and Drop to the DeskTop

Hi,
I would like to be able to drag and drop a component from my Java application
and for this component to be shown on the desk top. The idea is to have monitor
components on the desktop which are always on top but small enough so that they
do not take up as much space as when the window containing these components
are open.
I have seen an example program that does just this, it is the ICQ client. With this program
you can create an ICQ user in the application. Dragging this user onto the desktop causes that
componenr to remain on the desktop on top of all apps even twhen the program is restarted.
Cool.
Anyone know how this can be acheived in Java or via Windows API using JNI.

Look in the Applications folder to see if iPhoto is still there. If it is drag it back to the Finder Sidebar. If it is no longer in the Applications folder post back, you can also look in the Trash it might still be there.

Dragging a URL to the right side of the dock

I use to do this pretty elegantly when I wanted quick access instead of bookmarking it. Now dragging the URL works but it's dock independent and just stays on the desktop where as before I would just drag it to the dock and it would be clean and the @ icon would size proportionate to the dock icons. Mine is still working as it always has. Address dropped on the desktop it's a normal webloc, dragged from the address bar to the Dock it's the generic spring.
A webloc dragged from the desktop to the dock is a dock sized webloc icon.
You could try Relaunching finder~ right click the Finder icon in the dock holding down the option key at the same time, the relaunch option is then available on the context menu.
Restarting your Mac comes next then the ubiquitous permissions repair.

I'm suddenly not able to drag certain photos to the desktop... Why?

I've been using iPhoto '08 (currently v. 7.1.5) for a few years and never had any issues until recently. Some photos I can drag to the desktop with no problem (old photos, recent imports, edited, it doesn't seem to matter). But some photos won't drag and drop -- I get the white circle with the slash through it. I can select the same photo and choose File>Export and that works fine. At the same time that issue started, I noticed another problem. I am sometimes not able to cut a photo from one event and paste it into another. Again, it is only affecting some photos (not all), and it doesn't seem to matter if they are old, new, edited, etc. I move photos in this way a LOT so this is really driving me crazy! I'm not sure if these issues are related, but it seems like they may be since they started at the same time. Any help would be appreciated. Please type slowly and use small words -- I only know enough to be a danger to my Mac. Thanks!

Not long after I posted my question, my hard drive completely failed. Needless to say, I didn't get a chance to try out your suggestion. Since I wasn't using Time Machine, it has taken my until just this month to get all my photos back into iPhoto. There were a few issues getting things back to normal (as far as recreating events and such), but so far I haven't had any problems with dragging photos where I want them. Not sure if it was the hard drive causing the issue to begin with or not. Either way, thanks for the info. If the problem comes back I will definitely give that a try.

simply dragging from the desktop or its source a clip to the story/ timeline itself not having to use file> import media
which is a lot of steps IMHO
i notice when i do it also enters the library above where clips are seen and read to be dragged on the story line

By dragging it into the timeline you're importing it based on your import preferences. Great for single clips.

Assuming you are using iPhoto....
You want to select the event that has the photo in it then click once on the photo so it is highlighted with a yellow ring around it and then click and drag it to the desktop.
If you are finding it difficult to move the file that way you can select the picture in iPhoto and select
File > Export (Command + Shift + E) and select how you want to export it (format) and where you want to put it .

Cannot delete a file from the desktop.

There is a PDF file named 29cfa30-859968770702291.pdf on my desktop that I tried to delete. When I drag it to the trash, a dialogue box appears that says that the file cannot be deleted. What's up with this? Don't know what the file is and can't even do a "get info" on it.

Restart your Mac and attempt to delete it again.

Drag an image to the desktop saves as a bmp file

dragging an image from a webpage to Windows Explorer or compliant program (xplorer2 or Zoner, or FastStone Image or desktop etc) saves as a .bmp file (mostly!). Invariably *.bmp files are large files and since the original format would be jpg or png I have to convert back to these formats.

It’s the single worst feature of Firefox Mozilla.

Why is Finder opening new windows every time I drag a photo onto the desktop?

I've been having a couple of issues with my desktop (I am running 10.7.5):
1. When I save a photo by dragging it onto my desktop, it opens a new Finder window. It's only started doing this today, and I haven't changed any of my Preferences. How can I turn this function off?
2. I used to be able to drag a photo from my web browser to my desktop to save it. When it saved, it would stay where it was dragged. However, about a month ago, the files began snapping into rows rather than where I dragged them as well as piling up in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. How can I fix this so that they stay whereever I drag them when saving?
