This means you have Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on the computer used for syncing the iPhone. Switching from syncing music to manually managing music removes all music and videos on your iPhone first.

Hello, when I drag songs from my iTunes music library to my iPhone, iTunes tells me it is "Preparing to update." Eventually it stops preparing, but the songs are not copied. I have been dragging songs from my iTunes library to my phone for years. Suddenly this method isn't working. I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 7.0.3; it is updated. Likewise with iTunes; it's version 11.1.3, the current version. I have tried rebooting both phone and computer to no avail.

How can I get all of my music onto my iphone 5 from itunes on my computer, when it is only syncing the music i purchased from itunes store directly?

Everything was fine until I got a USB drive from a friend to download a new album onto my itunes from her. I struggled to get the music synced onto my iphone 5, but it got into itunes fine on my laptop. So I ended up resyncing the whole device, and apparently this means it only could transfer the songs that I had bought from itunes, and none of the previous music I had from cds, etc that I had added to itunes by myself over the years. Now on itunes it has a cautin sign for every single non itunes purchased song saying it does not know where to find the song and can not play it. My iphone now only has 43 songs (the ones I bought from itunes store) and is missing the other 2000 I have. Does anyone know how to fix this for me???? I am desperate! I'm using windows 8 on this new laptop and am beyond confused!
Also it might be important to note that I had itunes on an older laptop and within the past year i have transfered everything to a new laptop, so perhaps since the original music folders were on the old laptop, it cant find them? I don't know, I am not great with technology, but desperate please!!!

Copy everything form your backup copy of your old computer to the new one.

Hey everyone - not sure if I'm the only one who's having this problem, but I have the latest iTunes (10.5.3) and my iPhone 4S is up to date (running 5.0.1).
I just purchased an album on iTunes, but cannot drag the purchased tracks onto my phone, even though it's showing in the sidebar. I had to go into iTunes on my phone and download them there. Is there some setting I need to check to allow drag n drop as well as iCloud stuff?

So glad to find this discussion - this was baffling me, too! I didn't realize that because I had purchased a new laptop, my iPhone didn't recognize the library on the new computer, even though I was using the same Apple iTunes account. I checked the manual management box as suggested, and my iPhone library now has to be rebuilt, which will take awhile, but I can deal with that. It's working. Thanks!

Correct. When you purchase devices, they would have stated the OS they needed to work, on the box. This can be overlooked, but it is very important to check when purchasing.
You current OS, is so old, that they technology build into the new devices, is not something your OS understands. It didn't exist when your OS was created, and therefore you need to upgrade the OS to work with the newer technology of these devices.

Songs downloaded on iPhone mssing from iTunes

Hi, I downloaded a double-album recently on my iPhone and came back to find that half of the album didn't show up on iTunes after I'd synced. I tried checking for downloads, re-syncing and re-logging into iTunes to no avail. The music is no longer on my iPhone either, but it was the first time I downloaded. Any tips?
Also, extra credit question: Why do some of the albums I buy on the iPhone appear in iTunes without Artist designations, only as albums. For example, Blur doesn't show up in the Artist list but 'The Best of Blur' shows up in Albums. This has happened twice now and doesnt ruin my day, but confuses me.

Have you tried checking iTunes' Purchased folder? In order for me to synch music to my iPhone, I have to right-click on the songs from the Music section, and select "Add to Playlist," and then choose "Purchased."
After the music is added, I usually right-click again and choose "Get Album Artwork," and then, back on the iPhone screen, I select the "Music" tab, and then make sure my "Purchased" folder is checked off, and then I hit "Synch."

Can't delete, cut, or copy a song onto my iPhone 4S from charging it onto iTunes

When I have a song on my phone and I want 2 delete it on iTunes I can't delete, cut, or copy that song and also the "get info" button has the info in grey. When I delete a song on my phone, the song on iTunes will have an "!" Sign beside it after clicking the deleted song on my phone. PLEASSEEE HELPPP!!! It's been like this for a longgg while.

The best way to ensure the content gets removed from your iPhone is to back it up and then Erase All Content and Settings. See the article belows below for more info:

You can remove all settings and information from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using "Erase All Content and Settings" in Settings > General > Reset.

Try going onto itunes on your computer. In the upper right hand corner you should see an account. If it's yours then I don't know what to do, but if it's hers click on it. All you have to do is highlight the account hit back space and enter yours in and it will retain the information. Hope this helped.

No, the "!" in front of the songs in iTunes indicate that iTunes has lost the link for the files on your hard drive. I would suggest you try to play some of the songs in iTunes. You should get the error about iTunes not being able to find the file, then a message about wanting to locate the file. Say yes about locating the file & see if you can find them on your Mac's hard drive.

I am losing the will to live trying to do what I thought would be a straightforward task. It certainly used to be?!?! Copy my music on Itunes from my Mac to new iPhone5.
When I connect iPhone 5 to Mac via usb, automatically shows my iPhone5 device on Iphoto, then when I close Iphoto and open Itunes the device isn't anywhere to be seen. I've read a few other articles/solutions that mention about ctrl S or option command s but that produces the classic apple "thud" response. Rapdily losing my faith in Apple to be honest. I have (I think) downloaded the most up to date iTunes and iOS but everything is now a total mess and not intuitive at all. I am not a techno geek so please, please can someone help using plain English.

I configured a verizon email account in Outlook. Then, when I go to iTunes to sync and upload contacts, a choice for Outlook doesn't appear. Only a choice for Windows Contacts. iTunes apparently doesn't see the new email account configuration. How do I upload Outlook contacts to the iPhone 4 s? Help !!

If it worked at one time this is usually caused by a bad contact record in the contact database. As a start open Contacts in Outlook, using the Phone List view. Open the first contact, then save it. If you get an error this is a bad contact. If this does not find that the first record is bad open iTunes go to Edit/Preferences, then the Syncing tab, and Reset Sync History and try again.
If it still won't sync contacts you can use scanpst.exe to check the PST file. It is usually in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033. Instructions can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/287497
Alternatively, using Outlook, export the PST file as a CSV file, then import it.

You made a purchase and exhausted the credit on your card before it processed. All purchases are final. Contact iTunes Store support. You need to settle up before you can purchase or download anything else.

Ok I am having a problem I cannot drag any of my music on my itunes library onto my iphone. I have looked online at everyones comments and what they tell you to do and nothing works and plus when you click the things they tell you to click on it says its going to delete everything on your iphone and i hit cancel can some please help me!

You will have to check the manually manage music box.
Changing from syncing to manually managing will indeed erase the current content.
Why not just sync the music?

I have had to reset my laptop to factory settings and reinstall iTunes. I backed up all my songs and apps and have now put all songs back in to iTunes. However, now i cannot drag songs or apps from my iTunes to my iPhone.
It only gives me the 'no entry' style icon when i drag it across rather than the 'plus' icon to add items to the iPhone.
Any ideas how to get round this or will i have to clear the phone and start again?
Any help would be very appreciated.
