I cannot empty the trash after upgrading to Lion

Hi,
Since I upgraded to Lion everything has been running smoothexcept the Trash.  For some reason it doesn’tlet me empty it, when I try it, it just sits there showing the progress bar, Ileft it there for an hour thinking that it probably needed time but nothing it’snot working.
Any idea how can I solve this issue?
Is there a third party application that I can use?
Thanks a lot!

Works for me, especially with the annoying PDFs that won't trash.

My problem begain after I deleted many two-year old backup files on my WD My Book external disk drive. I received the error -8003 message when I tried to delete a single file or group of files from Trash on the dock on my desktop. I tried most of the methods recommended in this community and other websites (e.g., CNET) -- all to no avail. I also downloaded and tried Trash It which did not work for me.
Someone recommended using the Maintenance application. The app can typically be found in
Finder > Applications > Utilities > Maintenance  (or, Applications > Maintenance).  I opened the app, and following the instructions, did a Verify Disk on the Mac HD drive (my startup drive).  Errors were found by the app and I then, per the instructions, I ran Repair Disk Permissions. It took about one hour to complete the entire operation.
Then, without a Shut Down or a Restart, I opened the Trash icon and all those hundreds of files were gone.  I then tested Trash by chucking a couple of uneeded documents and some photos from the Mac into the Trash and then selected Empty -- viola, no problem in emptying the Trash.
I also used Maintenance>Verify Disk on my WD My Book external disk drive and found it corrupted too. I am presently running Repair Disk Permissions (estimated one hour and 20 minutes) and hope that it solves that drive's problems.
    Good luck to all!

  • Unable to empty trash after upgrading to Lion

I recently updated to 10.7 Lion and now cannot empty my trash either by right-clicking and selecting empty trash and also accessing the Finder menu and selecting empty trash or secure empty trash. I can hear the standard empty trash sound clip but all files and folders still remain in the trash and the trash icon remains full.
    Any clues?
I verified and repaired disk permissions after updating to Lion and then downloaded the remaining software updates.
    I've run out of ideas.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Benjamin,
Just got off the phone with Applecare.
It took us a awhile but eventually using these steps helped with solving the problem.
    Go to Terminal
    Type in the following command
    sudo rm -rf
Make sure there is a "space" right after -rf
Then drag all your files or folders into Terminal after the command above
It should show you a list of all files and folders you dragged into Terminal
    Next hit enter
It will ask for your system password
Enter in your password which will show blank
    Hit enter
Then go back to your trash can and empty it.
Your trash should be empty now.
To keep it simple, instead of dragging a bunch of files and folders into Terminal, I found it was easier to drag all your trash into one folder and then use that one folder to drag into Terminal.
A final note. I created a dummy .txt file, dropped it into trash and noticed my trash still does not empty by simply right clicking and selecting empty trash.
I'm not sure if this is a bug in the Lion OSX or not. Hopefully, someone can provide some more insight.

  • I cannot empty the trash in iPhoto 8.1.2

First, I'm unable to locate any photos in iPhoto. The folder associated cannot be opened and system wide searches for wils are dead ends.
So I have taken all of the 3000+ photos I want to keep and organized them into a folder on the desktop as recommended in this forum.
Now I want to empty the trash and begin all over again with this version of iPhoto.
How do I delete the files int he trash folder?
    Thanks in advance.

You really need to gove more details.

Not sure where you found that recommendation.
You put the iPhoto Library into the trash and empty that. Next time you start iPhoto it will create a new Library.

  • Cannot Empty the Trash

    Hi all,
I had updated the OS to Leopard last week. After updated, the Trash cannot empty and hold on at emptying status for a very very long time. I need to relaunch the program and all the file still in the Trash.
    How to fix my problem?
    Thanks a lot.
    Ken

    Try:
    Open a Finder window
In the left click on "Applications"
On the right, go into the "Utilities" folder
In here locate "Terminal" and run it
    in here type:
    +ls ~/.Trash+
    Press return
It will print the name of the file on the screen. Please take note of it and let me know
    Now type:
    +sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*+
    Press return on the keyboard
It will ask for your password, type it in. It will appear as if it is not accepting it, but it really is, just continue to type.
    Press return on the keyboard
    Close this window
Check the trash, it should now be totally empty

  • Cannot search in Entourage after upgrading to Lion

just upgraded to Lion. Now cannot search in Entourage. Shows "no results found".

    This problem just hit me.
I have just spent 3 hours trying every combo of Flash and Java install/uninstall in order to get video on Safari on MBPr with ML. There are various posts on this issues going back thought several OSs.
Flash 10.3 can make it work on Firefox, but that is likely to be a security hazard, acccording to Apple, so was not ideal. I tried everything that I could find on line.
Nothing would make Safari function... then I hit on a simple solution. I keep a clone of my HDD via Carbon Copy Cloner (although Time Machine should work too). I trashed all the /Library/Internet Plugins, and replaced them with those from the clone, which was a couple of days old. I repaired permissions (there were quite a few to do from this), but then... back to normal.
    Good luck!

  • Chrome doesn't start half the time after upgrading to Lion.

When I click on the Google Chrome icon either on the dock or from Applications, nothing happens half the time. The icon on the dock doesn't do the bouncy thing any more, it just sits there like a smug little twit, taunting me, daring me to do something. If I logout and login, it often starts working. Sometimes I need to reboot the machine. Lion is updated on a daily basis, so it isn't old OS libraries that's causing the problem. Any suggestions?

odd, works here like a charm..
try this..(i assume you have installed this under applications and no other google products installed)
    remove google chrome.app
    remove <username>/library/google
    remove <username>/library/application support/google
    remove /library/google
after that reboot and try to reinstall google chrome

If all else fails use Utilities> Terminal.
If there are several locked files in the Trash, you can unlock them all at the same time at the command line. Follow these steps:
Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities.
    Type:
    chflags -R nouchg
Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.
Type:chflags -R nouchg  Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.
Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.
Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.
Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window.
Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.
Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.
    Empty the Trash.
If the Trash does not empty or if you see a message in Terminal that says "usage: chflags [-R [-H | -L | -P]] flags file..." you most likely did not type the text in step 2 as indicated or did not leave a space. Repeat the steps if this happens.

Do you have anything in the trash you can see? Sometimes if there is an application in the trash it can contain hundreds of files that you can't normally see and those may be presenting you with errors.
