I cannot empty trash on my Mac Pro when I have external drives attached

I try emptying trash and get the message, "Operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."  When I remove the external flash drives, the trash is empty.  As soon as I reconnect the drives, same message occurs when I try to empty the trash.  Help!

Every file and folder in Mac OS X has some permission settings to help define what you or other users can do with the file or folder, for example whether you may modify it or not. If see an alert box with a message that says you do not have "sufficient" privilege or permission, see the tips in the "Emptying the Trash" section ofthis article.

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.

  • Cannot empty trash can in iMac. Says I have no access to some of the items. Any ideas?

I created some files and folders on my iMac and deleted them. This time around when I try to empty the trash can via secure emptying it says I have no access to some of the items... Very strange. I had done same a while ago and worked with same files and folders. I restarted system. Same problem persisting. "Get Info" on files shows read and write. It is my own personal Mac... Any ideas? Thank you.

  • How do you boot a Mac Pro hardrive as an external drive on an iMac?

    Hi All,
I hope you can help me.
I have a Mac Book Pro. The mother board has died but the hard drive is still working fine according to the technicians.
I decided not to repair the Mac Book Pro as its quite old and I wanted a bigger screen so I got a new iMac.
The problem is when the Mac Book Pro died there were two files on the desktop that I had not backed up.
I know its not a massive problem. But my curiosity has made me wonder if it is possible to plug the Mac Book Pro into the iMac and boot the Mac Book Pro's hard disk as an external disk on the iMac so I can recover the files.
I'm sure it must be possible. But how?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

From what you have said about the disk drive coming from an older Mac, my initial response is no. The odds are that the version of OS X and the drivers on the disk drive from the old MBP will not be able boot the new iMac.
But do you really need to boot from the old disk drive or just gather the data from it?
If all you need is the data that should be doable by putting the disk drive in an external enclosure and connecting it to the iMac.

  • How to load LR 5 on 13"mac book pro, don't have external drive but have my old mac book pro 15"?

I tried to transfer lightroom 5 from one of my macs to the other via wifi, but seeing as that would've taken ages (324 hours to be exact) I nixed that idea. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to install lightroom 5 on my mac 13'', which does not have a cd drive?

    Cheers,
I'm not gonna lie, I actually have no idea if its pop or imap. Do you know where you can check and if it can be changed?
Hotmail on a Mac is POP3 only, you will only get the basic folders (inbox, sent, trash etc) and it will not sync with other devices.
And now I post this I see other replies, so this is redundant. !!

Okay.   Try Googling Macbook error 8003.   Item1 and others below it relate to that error.

I  have a new Mac Pro computer and have migrated my files from my older computer to the new computer. In trying to open a Lightroom catalog on an external hard drive  I keep on getting the message "lightroom cannot use the catalog named " " because it is  not writable and cannot be opened. I have fixed all the "permissions" and yet it will still not open. How do I fix this?

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

  • How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put things in the Trash? Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash.

How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put items in the Trash?  Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash. I have a MacBook OS X 10.5.8

The reason why some of the files are blocking the trash from emptying is because of specific ".app" files from third party companies like Adobe products. Not the user files or the various help documents but instead the actual mother program. Here's how to fix this problem:
    1) remove from the trash all the actual software programs like Photoshop, InDesign, DreamWeaver and so on and put them on the desktop.
    2) Command "I" (info) and when the dialog box opens go to the "Name & Extension" text box and remove the ".app" from the software name. Example: Photoshop.app change to Photoshop.
    3) the program icon will change to a "folder icon".
    4) put the folder icon back into the trash and you should be able to now empty the trash.
If you continue to get the error code 8003 it's because you may still have one or more software programs in the trash that needs to go through this process. Remember - it's not the user files or help documents or supporting files that is causing this but instead the "actual product programs".

  • Cannot empty trash because item is owned by 'unknown'

I am trying to delete 16 files from an old Time Machine backup. The trash refuses to empty, returning the error message above. Doing a cmd-i shows no users and says 'you have unknown access'. There is no option to set myself as the owner (and no padlock symbol). I have tried the Terminal sdu rm -rf command but still it will not delete. The files are old (2004-2008) system Preferences files of the form:
    com.apple.FontBook.plist
    com.apple.dock.db
    etc.
Is there a way to reset the ownership and to remove these files?
    Thanks.

I doubt that re-installing the OS will accomplish anything. I think that the problematic trashed items are still on the same external drive that they were on originally, and if so, re-installing the OS will not affect such items.
The Trash window you see when you open the Trash icon on the dock can represent more than one folder. When you move an item on your startup disk to the Trash, it goes into a hidden folder named .Trash in your home directory. Files on external volumes that are trashed are stored separately, in a hidden .Trashes folder at the root level of each external drive. The external trash is segregated by user, so that the trash belonging to the user whose UID is 501 goes into the .Trashes/501 folder on the external drive, etc. The contents of the separate user-specific trash folders appear together in the single Trash window that you see when you open the Trash icon in the dock.
So if you log into a different user account, the Dock Trash icon there will probably act normally, because it no longer includes the contents of the .Trashes/501 folder on the external drive - it will be looking at a different subfolder there, such as .Trashes/502, along with the .Trash folder in that account's Home folder. Likewise if you shut down, disconnect the external TM drive, and then restart, the Trash icon should again be able to be emptied, because the "bad" files are no longer mounted. Re-connecting the external drive will re-create the problem.
If your system does behave this way, I think it isolates the problem to the external drive itself, not to any issue with the OS.

  • Why wont my Mac pro start if a usb drive is connected?

....even if an empty little mac os journelled 250mb flash drive is inserted on startup, osx kinda waits until i pull it out to move off the white screen and give me the desktop...
its not a big problem because as soon as i disconnect any usb device it gets going but i was just wondering if anyone knew why it does it and if it could possibly highlight any bigger issues?
    thanks,
    steve

I am having the same problem. I got a 1.5TB Seagate FreeAgent USB hard drive. It was brand new but formatted Fat Dos. I used disk utility to partition the drive (only way it would format it) to the choice for GUID or something that said it would work with intel mac. I got the drive working fine showing up in finder etc. I rebooted the computer and it hung on a gray screen and eventually a folder with a question mark came up flashing. If I hit the power button on the Mac pro and disconnect the usb drive it boots fine. If I restart the computer without the drive attached it boots fine. If the drive is connected it will not reboot. Does the Mac think that the USB drive is the boot drive? How would this happen and how would I correct it? I need to use this drive as a backup drive for Time Machine as my time capsule is full. Please help

  • I can't get my Mac Pro to recognize my external hard drive

I recently purcchased a Mac Pro. I have a 15" PowerBook G4 that I still use. About a year a go I purchased a Lacie 500 GB external hard drive and formated it on my PowerBook and transfered about 350 GB of data over a period of time. I know am trying to access the Lacie on Mac Pro and the disk will not mount. I know that you have to format external drives differenly for Intel Macs but is there a way for me to access my data on my Lacie?
Please help! I need these files.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Dual Core 3.0 Ghz, 4 GB memory

Intel Macs use a different partition table format (GUID) for booting. Otherwise, the PPC/APL tables should still let it mount etc unless there is a problem with LaCie or the FireWire ports.
Does it have FW800/400 and USB2?
Seems like LaCie isn't using the best cases or firmware or bridge.
This is a D2 model? two drives bridged to appear as one volume?
