I cannot even get onto internet with Firefox 4. Just an opening page, stuck there. FF4 has messed up my whole system.

The only way I can get to internet is through IE 64bits.

You cannot boot an iBook from an external USB drive--only a firewire drive. Actually, the drive is just a drive--it is the enclosure that determines USB vs. FireWire. If you could find an appropriate firewire enclosure, you could remove the drive from the USB enclosure and place it in a firewire enclosure and then be able to boot from that. Or you could just purchase an external firewire drive if those are available where you are.
FireWire external drives are quite useful. One option would be to mount the external drive on the good iBook, format it properly for OS X with Disk Utility, and then use a program like Super Duper to make an exact clone of your internal hard drive. This is a popular way of backing up your stuff. You can boot from either the internal or the external. This means that if your internal hard drive were to die, you would have all your stuff on the external, and could run off of that. Since you are already using the USB for backup, it would probably be best to acquire a new firewire drive for troubleshooting and testing if you decide to go this route, since you really don't want to lose your existing backup.
If you did have a bootable clone, you could see if the sick iBook would boot from it or not. However, it may be more productive to pursue your other thread about the boot problem. I see that Richard has joined the thread as I had hoped he would. He actually works on iBooks and is very knowledgeable.
Also, if you do get the second ibook working and want to install OS9, you might want to post a question in the "Mac OS X v 10.3 Panther and earlier" forum. I'm not up on this myself, but I believe there is something about installing OS 9 drivers while formating or something like that. I believe the smart guys on that forum could give you some guidance so that you can avoid the problems you encountered earlier.
Good luck!

Go to settings on your iPad select store and look to the bottom of the screen - ensure it is your apple id shown as being logged on - if it not yours click on the apple id choose log out and then enter your details and password.
If someone has entered their apple id on your ipad and automatic downloads are enabled you can be receiving apps they have purchased.

• Firefox crashes on my Mac every time I try to open it. How do I fix this if I cannot even get it to open.

I cannot get Firefox to even open on my Mac desktop. It crashes every time I try to use it and it will not even allow me to send a report. Some sites I need to visit caution me not to use Safari, but that Firefox is safe. If I cannot even get it to open, how am I supposed to use or fix any problem with Firefox.
It just suddenly started to crash on its own and I am not a computer wiz, so what do I do on my Mac to successfully open and use Firefox as a browser?

You can try to start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] by holding down the Options key.

I had made some changes to Firefox this morning, including changing the start-up page to Outlook. Now as soon as Firefox comes up and Outlook starts, it freezes. I cannot even get to the Firefox options to reset them.

To start Firefox up with a blank page with a blank page instead of your home page, you can type or paste the following in the "Run" dialog, or maybe in the charms bar search box (I haven't tested that):
firefox.exe "about:blank"
I'm not sure why Outlook.com -- which should redirect to the Live Mail login page if your previous session cookies have expired -- would freeze Firefox.

• I can't access the internet with Firefox on my computer (Windows 7 PC). I have used Firefox as my browser for 1 year but 5 days ago it stopped working even though Internet Explorer worked fine. I can't solve the problem and need some help.Randy Brown

September 26, 2011
Dear Mozilla,
I am having some difficulty accessing the internet with Firefox on one of my PC computers. I normally use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser and google is my homepage and gmail is my email system. The operating system is Windows 7. For over a year this system worked perfectly but a few days ago it stopped working. When I launch Firefox now I get the message that that website (www.google.com) is unavailable. In fact, I can’t access any website and I am blocked from the internet entirely within Firefox. My internet connection is fine because Internet Explorer works fine. I can access google and any other website within that web browser. I have investigated all the security issue I can manage and found no smoking gun. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox to no avail. Is Windows 7 compromising the effectiveness of Firefox? Any suggestions or other assistance you can offer would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Randy Brown

Yesterday I did an update on software to get the facetime to work. It downloaded along with eight other updates an Itunes update now I cannot even get Itunes to open I am now completely frustrated Now two applications are not working. Help

Hi,
I tried opening it from the application folder and nothing happens. I have tried from the dock and the same thing. Unfortunately this is not the application that I ws intending to work on. This was running perfectly fine for me. I have a lot of music on it. I know all is still there because I can see it through spotify. I started looking for help with Face time with came up with a needing proper credentials in order to open. Now neither open after a 9 an automatic download of nine updates. At this point I don't know what else to do.

I found a fix for this, not only firefox but several other networking programs were broken as well (Outlook and IE were ok for some reason) so I reasoned that the Norton uninstall was incomplete somehow - I had done it from the add/remove programs in the control panel. Sure enough that's not enough to release Norton's tentacles in your system, there's an uninstall tool on their website (a whole set of them actually) that managed to carve it out completely and after a restart everything was back to normal. My machines will definitely be Norton-free from now on ... N

• How do I force-eject a CD when I cannot even get to the start-up screen?

Friends, Let me first apologize for getting myself into this mess, in the first place.
I bought a second-hand iBook G4 in the U.S., for a friend of mine, and brought it to South America, where I am living for one year, but far from any Mac Repair Center. I am getting the computer ready, to give to my friend, as a gift.
The computer was working perfectly here for the few weeks that I have had it. It has OS 10.3.9 installed, but no OS9. I wanted to install OS9, so that I could give my friend some older software to use with it.
(In fact, I inserted the software CDROM that I was going to give to my friend, into the second computer, to install the program before giving him the disk also. This was an important mistake.)
Moreover, the OS9 disk that came with this second "new" computer does not appear to be the same one that shipped with the computer originally. Consequently, when I tried to install OS9 Classic, it would not install correctly from this disk (although it was indeed made for installing OS9 to another iBookG4, but not this one, apparently.)
Consequently, as a short-cut, I simply copied my own Classic "system folder" from my own (completely) identical iBookG4, transferred it to a pen drive, and was going to move it to the second computer. Not all of the files copied successfully, however (some printer descriptions, for example), but most of them did.
So, I transferred what I could, in the meantime, and now I had a new Classic "system folder" on the second computer.
When starting up the Mac Classic environment there, however, the Classic environment would crash, and in that case I would just close the Classic environment altogether and continue normally in OSX mode, trying to solve the problem. I realized that my "copy" was not good enough.
Then I got the idea to make an "archive" of the original classic folder on my own computer, and then transfer the archive, to see if it would make a more perfect copy this way. It archived perfectly indeed, and at half the size, so I assumed that I would now have all the necessary documents, once it was transferred and decompressed onto the second computer.
Meanwhile, I decided to erase the incomplete corrupt copy of the (classic) system folder on the second computer, to avoid confusion when the new copy was transferred. As I moved it to the trash, the computer told me that it was being used by the system, and that it therefore could not be deleted. Since the classic environment was not running, I assumed that this was some sort of error, meant to protect the folder from accidental deletion regardless of the circumstances. Consequently I re-named the folder, and then deleted it successfully, and received no error message.
I went back to the first computer, to copy the new, archived classic folder to my pen drive. When I did, and returned to the second computer, I noticed that the screen was black there, but the disk, still spinning.
I checked to see if it was the display, or the connection, or if the computer was sleeping, or the screen saver activated, but none was the case.
I re-booted, but there was no start-up chime. The disk spun normally (or perhaps more loudly than normal).
I re-booted, holding down P and R, but no results. The display was completely black (i.e., no ilumination whatsoever, not merely a dark screen, but rather black).
I concluded that the source of the problem was what I had done with the classic folder (renaming it or deleting it).
I got the idea of inserting the system disk, to reboot from the CDROM, but the problem was that there was already a software disk inside, and it would not eject when the eject button was pushed.
I found some suggestions online. I rebooted holding down the track-pad button, for example. No results.
I rebooted holding down CMD OPT SHIFT O F, (or whatever the combinations were that were suggested). No results. I cannot even get a terminal screen to appear, much less a gray screen.
If I close the lid while the computer is running, the computer will NOT go into sleep mode. (So much for the suggestion about forcing an eject from sleep mode).
I noticed a comment online that there might be a force-eject hole inside the felt, but I do not know how to move the felt back well enough to see, nor do I know where to look, or whether there is even such a hole on this model. (if you know of a diagram or photograph online, please direct me)
(Incidentally, if it is any help regarding the model, it is of serial no. UV445CLX_ _ _ , assembled in Taiwan)
How can I force eject the CDROM inside?
Is the solution to reboot from the system software disk, once I succeed in ejecting the CDROM?

• Cannot connect to the Internet with my Satellite 1800-712

Hi,
had to reinstall WXP on my Satellite 1800-712, unfortunately have not the recovery disk otherwise it would all be ok.
Now I cannot get onto internet, I have downloaded new LAN drivers, installed them ok, LAN is set for auto detect, USB wireless dongle drivers installed all ok.
In my tray (bottom right) icon shows networks but with red cross... I get a message saying wireless networks are within range, click to see networks... when I click , sunscreen comes up saying no networks in range..... aarrrgggh.
What can I do, please?

Hello
Have you checked if the WLAN card is enabled on your notebook?
The hardware switch on the notebook must be set to on and you can also enable it with FN+F8.
Check this!!
Furthermore check the device manager for yellow exclamation marks. Maybe you should reinstall the driver. Therefore select the WLAN card in device manager and choose uninstall. Restart the notebook and install the newest WLAN driver from the Toshiba website.
Last but not least make sure that the router is in range of the notebook.
Good luck!

• I bought a LG slim portable dvd writer. I have gotten it connected, and it seems to have downloaded the drivers but then it turns off and I cannot even get the driver CD to eject because it turns off completely.

I bought an LG Slim Portable DVD writer. I connected it to my MacBook Air and the drivers seemed to download. There is an icon that says SuperMulti on my desktop. The portable drive comes on when I double click on the icon, and I hear the drive running. It turns off about 5 seconds later and I cannot even get the driver disc out because the drive is off (no green light).
I am not savvy. What do I do? It says it is compatible with Mac, but then in another place in the directions it states Windows is needed. Please help an old feeble woman!

You need to contact the DVD writer manufacture/vendor customer support and/or read its user manual. LG is not an Apple product.

If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone and use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
You can also wipe the iOS device by installing the FindMyiPhone app on another iOS device and using that app to wipe the device.
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If I do that, other messages follow. I am usually able to switch connection, but can have only one device on internet at a time. Tried to correct problem using Airport Utility, but failed.

Unfortunately, there is mass confusion about whether a device might be a modem or a modem/router since the terms are mixed up all the time. Even though a device might have only one Ethernet port, it can still be a router.
If this is your "modem".......
http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netopia-cayman-3341-router/4507-3319_7-30484785. html
It is not a modem.....it is a modem/router. If that is the case, then the AirPort Extreme is not the only router on your network....it is one of two routers, and it should be configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Does this device appear to be your "modem"?

• ''The new king of the desktop'' cannot even catch the internet!

Ever since I bought Lion for my MacBook Pro my internet wireless connection has constantly been dropping off without any warning. Restarts sometimes bring it back but I find it frustrating and embaressing that ''the new king of the desktop'' cannot even catch the internet!
I brought my machine to an Apple repair store here in Barcelona and the assistant assumed straight away it was a Lion software problem and how that he now advises everyone not to change over to Lion as it cause too many problems . They checked my MacBook Pro and confirmed the hardware was totally fine and that the problem was in fact the software.
I asked if they could fix it, (I mean there are laptops that are built in garden sheds that can carry out the simple task of picking up wireless internet!!!) I picked it up the next day and the internet had returned to my machine however a few hours later the same problem of the internet server not being found was regularly recurring. It is just not good enough. I spent 70 euro for nothing!
If anyone has any suggestions on how to resolve this, they would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I will just have to follow the Apple assistant´s advice and 'just go back to Leopard'

This seems to be a well-known issue. I had issues with my mid-2009 MacBook dropping its WiFi connection under Snow Leopard as well. Lion made it worse and it happens at least once a day now, although there are some weeks where it doesn't happen. It's the only WiFi-enabled device for it to happen. I don't know of a fix.
