I cannot get my Kindle Paperweight to connect to my Macbook air either by wireless or cable

How do I get my Kindle Paperweight to connect to my Macbook Air by cable or wirelass?
It does not show the Kindle as an external drive in either case and I cannot transfer documents to the Kindle.
