I cannot hear callers on iPhone 4s

Since this morning I have not been able to hear callers but they can hear me. I  can hear them if I put them on speaker phone or use my ear phones, but I cannot hear them normally with my handset. I have tried retarting the phone and cleaning out the earphone jack but nothing has worked. Can anyone else suggest a resolution without requiring me to reset my phone and loose all my content and data?

Try restoring phone. If that does not work, then make an appointment with apple genius.

  • I cannot hear callers unless using speakerphone. the phone is not on mute, the problem has started for no apparent reason and rebooting has not resolved the problem. Any ideas?

My iphone 4 (Model MD128B/A) running iOS 7.1.2 has developed a problem when receiving calls, for no apparent reason. The caller can hear me, but unless I switch to speakerphone, I cannot hear them. The mute button still functions normally. I have rebooted the phone but this has not resolved the issue. Any ideas about how to resolve this problem? Thanks.

    Hello manleyjohn,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are unable to hear callers though the receiver on your iPhone 4 unless you change the sound to the speaker. In this situation, I would recommend reading over the attached article and verifying that the troubleshooting steps have been completed. If the issue continues, it may be necessary to follow the link towards the bottom of the article and contact Apple Support.

  • Having trouble hearing callers on iPhone 5.

I am having trouble hearing callers when they are speaking to me on iPhone 5, even though I have pressed the volume as high as possible. Other than getting an op on my ears does anyone know if there is a way to make the caller louder please?

Same here too!  It hasn't been working right since Apple kicked Google Maps to the curve.  I wish Apple would hurry up and give all iCloud users our own @icloud.com email address finally!

  • Unable to hear callers on iPhone 4

Is anyone else having problems hearing callers on your iPhone4?  If so, is there a simple solution?  I'm able to hear incoming callers utilizing the speakerphone and headset, but I'm unable to hear them through the phone's ear speaker.  I'm hoping I don't have to return the phone.

I bought my IPhone4s the end of March 2012. After a couple of weeks I started having the same problem. I could not hear the caller but they could hear me or I could not hear the other party when I tried to make a call. I could only hear them if I put it on speaker. I took it to Verizon and they discovered that the phone thought the headphones were still plugged in. (if you push the volume button on the side it reads that the headphones are in) They had not seen this before so they sent me a new one.  After a week with the new one it did the same thing.  I took it to Verizon again and while I was in there there was a lady whose phone was doing the same thing. They sent me a third phone but before it arrived my phone started working again. I didn't want to go throught the hassle of transfering the data so I decided to keep my phone and sent the replacement back. Now 2 weeks latter my phone is doing the same thing again. I've turned it off and on again and have tried plugging in the headphones and taking them out again but it is still doing it. I have it in an Otter box so I don't think anything is getting in the speaker jack. They even tried to clean the jack out at the Verizon store. I am frustrated because I don't know what I should do. Anyone have the same problem or have a suggestion as to how to solve this problem?

  • Re;Cannot hear callers or hear outgoing calls

    Blacckberry Q10
Did a recent software update 10.2.1.2102
Now cannot make calls - no ring tone but does connect the call ? cannot hear
Incoming same problem - they hear me but cannot hear them /
Done the usual take battery out etc
    Any ideas ??!! Frustrating

    Hi Harve63
First, i'd like to see if it will resolve with reboot your device in this way. Turn on your Q10, connect to the OEM wall charger and pull the battery. Leave it for 20 minutes. Reinsert the battery after 20 minutes and test with a phone call. If still persist, reboot once again with remove sim card and SD Card.
You may check your hardware (speaker/microphone/buzzer) also with BlackBerry Virtual Expert (download from BlackBerry World). If the test result says one of your hardware fails, then you need to claim a warranty to get fix or replacement from your carrier or authorized dealer where you bought the phone.
    Good luck.

  • I phone 4 cannot hear callers

new i phone4 user, phone syncd etc ok. problems arise when i call anyone, i cannot hear them but they can hear me, when i touch speaker to go blue i can hear them fine, take it off and all sound is gone . I have all plactic covers removed and can hear all sounds ie key board , and messages coming in. any suggestions? thanks

Try to restore the phone as a new phone. If that does not solve the problem it is likely a hardware defect that needs to be taken to the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store.

  • Cannot hear callers through receiver, all other sounds ok

I woke up this morning to a phone call.  I could barely hear my friend.  I clicked it to speakerphone and everything was fine.  I can hear clicks when I am texting, music through the speaker from iTunes, etc.  The only thing that is impaired is the voice of whoever I am talking to when not on speakerphone.  I have seen other posts relating to this problem but have found no solutions yet.

Same here. No fix yet. Restoring, or the idiotic suggestion of putting in and then removing headset many times, do NOT work.
What's Apple doing about this? Seems to be more than a prevalent issue. Wasn't Apple hardware supposed to be high quality? This sounds like crap.

  • Upgraded to IOS 7, now cannot hear callers and they cannot hear me.

Speaker and mic works perfect for music, voice notes, voice mail... everything but making phone calls

Have you reset since the upgrade? Hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

  • Cannot hear or be heard on my iphone

My iphone has suddenly gone mute I cannot hear callers and they cannot hear me.  I cannot also hear any voice messages.  Please help.

Here we go again, with the same problems as before. Needless to say that FIOS never came..It's in the area but not to mine. Just about every other month I have had noise on the line and dropped calls. This unacceptable since I pay my bills without fail and when repairmen come, they try their best, but what can be done with bad input cables. You try to find the date that Fios will replace the main cable, with no help.  WHY CAN'T VERIZON NOT KNOW WHAT FIOS'S IS DOING WHEN!!! You Verizon are BIOS!!!!
Three days ago I have had same problem with the phone, spoke to phone rep yesterday, today repairman came. He rerouted the wires on the pole , stated to wait two hours for activation. Phone now working even worst than before. Called to advise of problem...work order called in for December 11th. Almost two weeks without full service...

  • Cannot hear on iphone 4

Recently I cannot hear callers - speaker stopped working. Speaker phone works fine. I have run latest software updates. Any suggestions.
    Thanks

I am experiencing the same problem, started about 10 days ago. To date, I have reset network settings, and have restored to default without success.
The weird thing with my issue I've noticed, after I go through a half dozen attempts at calling and recalling the person back, eventually, the problem goes away and the caller can hear me without issue after that. But then that may just be the 50% of the time occurrence.
So, I wonder if this is signal related, although it has occurred in 3 different locations in the US. Or if there is some restricted, or privacy policy that is related to AT&T regarding my account when calling. Kind of like being on a no fly list?
However, I can't continue with this happening, everyone says I am give Steve Jobs a bad name, so its to the genius bar or whatever they call it these days, I am heading.

  • Very weak one bar signal on iphone 5. callers cannot hear me. HELP

Very weak one bar signal on iphone 5. callers cannot hear me. Other iphones work good in the same locations. HELP

A network extender? Not sure what that is.. Sounds like it might help here at home.. But what about outside the house? At work, the store, or just out on the road?
I'm hopeing this is something that can get fixed.. I hate to think I wasted all this money on something that doesn't work.. Does apple have a return police?
I think I'll try getting an appointment at the apple store to see if they can fix this issue.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I can hear callers, they cannot hear me unless on speaker

i can hear callers, they cannot hear me unless on speaker
    New iPhone 4
    Have already done full resets

    Hello Lorilynn63,
It sounds like you have already restored the device as new and the issue persists. If thats the case, then I would say that you have ruled out software as a possible culprit, and would reset the device with this process:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
From: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
If the issue persists then I would take a look at the Service Answer Center - iPhone found here http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipho ne.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Callers cannot hear me after Ios8 update

After I updated to iOs8, i immediately began getting a message that this charger or accessory is not compatible with this Iphone. However, nothing was plugged in! After a few hours the message stopped. But now callers cannot hear me, although I can hear them. Callers are able to hear me when I put the speakerphone on, which is not an acceptable solution to the problem, i do not want to use speaker phone for every call. I have try the following
    - Power the device off then back on
    - Hard reset the device using home/sleep buttons
    - Checked the headset jack for debris
    - Adjusted the volume several times while on a test call
    - reset the network settings
    - toggled noise cancellation option while on a test call
Probably more than what's listed, i've been non stop for more than 24 hours! I have googled for a solution, but I am not seeing others with the same issues as mine after updating to iOS8, some have had the same issue with previous updates of different iOS versions. And I have tried all of the solutions that they were given. I feel like I have tried everything.
I do not want to downgrade back to iOS7, I'm not sure I even can.
So, any other suggestions? Should i just take the Device to my local Apple store and let them sort it out? I have an Iphone 5s that is only a few months old (probably less than 6)
    Thank you for any help!

If never jailboken/hacked, restore using iTunes, first also restoring a backup and if needed as new (without using a backup)
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
