I cannot install itunes as an old version of bonjour cannot be removed

I tried to upgrade to a new version of iTunes but it failed and i had problems with the bonjour software. I have no managed to uninstall everything except Bonjour. When i try and install iTunes, an error message appears saying an old version of Bonjour cannot be removed contact support.
There is a Bonjour folder in my C/Programme Files folder and is also listed in the control panel but i cannot remove it as it is looking for bonjour.msi file?
How do i get past this?

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • When I try to download iTunes I this error message "an old version of Bonjour cannot be deleted" and when I try it won't let me saying that the bonjour.msi is missing.

I am trying to download iTunes, it gets so far and then I get an error message that says that an old Bonjour cannot be removed, it goes on a bit further and says and old Apple Software Update cannot be removed; and then it says that the installation was interrupted and to try again.
I have gone to the control panel and tried to remove all traces of Bonjour, Apple, Quicktime but the two will not be removed it says that their .msi file and missing and to try to find them.  I have even reinstalled the programs from the ProgramData files in an attempt to repair or replace the missing files but I still get the same answer.
Can anyone help me? I need iTunes up and running to sync with my phones.
    Thank you for your help,

    Hi Barbara,
I had a similar problem recently and using the "more like this" feature I discovered an answer. To a problem posed by Holo7,  who like myself was a newbie on this platform,  b noir proposed a solution to Holo7's problem that also worked with my problem. It involves downloading a version of MS Windows Instal Cleanup and using it to completely remove all traces of the old version.
If you look at my problem (follow OldGit66) and the link to Holo7's problem then you will find b noir's answer which I think may help you. I am new around here so you might want to wait for one of the higher status correspondents.

  • Cannot install update due to old version. what to do?

Can't install new quicktime version needed for IPOD touch App, due to inability to uninstall older version on PC.  Can't even find older version... There is Apple update software, however. Could this be fouling things up? Should I jettison that and try new install?

Okay. Just in case it's installation configuration trouble, we should try the Windows Installer CleanUp utility.

  • Cannot install itunes-older version of Bonjour stuck

I am trying to install Itunes v8, and install aborts saying "Older version of Bonjour cannot be removed."
    How can I repair this?

I get the same problem. All I know is I'm trying to install the latest version of iTunes, but old Bonjour can't update, therefore iTunes can't.
    I get the messages:
The file 'Bonjour.msi' is not a valid installation package. (I simplified it)
So, I try installing iTunes, and it says it can't get rid of Bonjour. So I find it, and try to delete the culprit, mdnsNSP.dll, but I can't. I disabled the Bonjour service from the service list, but still cannot be uninstalled, even in safe mode, even as Administrator.
    Any solutions?

These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? (For example, 8007000B.)
