I Cannot Make AE Base Station Work as a Hub

I have a G5 with Airport Extreme base station and I'm trying to use a separate Airport Express base station so I can plug my non-wireless G4 ethernet cable into the Airport Express and plug into my existing network, yet I cannot make it work!
I am so frustrated. I was using a D-Link 810 hub and it was so easy, yet there seems to be no way I can configure the Airport Express to be a simple access point, it seems like I have to set it up as a node on a WDS, which is uneccessary, or the G4 just can't see any network connection on its ethernet cable when plugged into the Express.
I thought it would be so much easier switching our D-Link 624 with the D-Link 810 router/access point to all Macintosh, but I am completely befuddled by how to replace our old setup.
If any of y'all can give me any help, I'd sure appreciate it...thanks!
Ed

You must connect the AirPort Express Base Station to the AirPort Extreme Base Station using WDS. This will activate the LAN port on the AX, and your computer should then be able to access the internet.

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • Cannot reset Airport Base Station (Graphite...)

Pls can anyone advise on next step...
I need to reconfigure my OLD graphite base station as I bought this from someone who +_has forgotten his password_+. I have followed step by step of the Apple Support instruction...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2439
But unfortunately everytime I try to reconfigure (taking care to follow every step)...
I FAIL... as there is an error and cannot complete.
I have walked through every step both automatic and manual and cannot enter a new configuration.
ALSO I am doing this connected via the ETHERNET IP 192.42.249.15 setting as instructed (this maybe why I cannot succeed!) BUT...
I cannot connect at all via the wireless as the temporary stated password 'PUBLIC" does not appear to allow me access.
Help from anyone would be most appreciated. thanks
    James

If I understand correctly, you are saying that you have been able to complete all of steps 1 through 8 listed in article HT2439, but you cannot reconfigure the base station according to the last step, step 9.
The article's reference in step 9 to AirPort Setup Assistant is out of date. AirPort Setup Assistant version 4.1 or later will not work with the Graphite, whereas any earlier version of AirPort Setup Assistant will not work with Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Therefore, you must use AirPort Admin Utility to reconfigure the base station. (The best version to use on a computer running Mac OS X 10.5 is AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5.)
The second paragraph under "Additional Information" in the article, pertaining to the use of AirPort Admin Utility to reconfigure the base station, also contains wording that is out of date. The gist of it is that it is advising you to disconnect the Ethernet connection to the computer, make AirPort active, join the Graphite's wireless network (whose name should have reverted to a series of numbers, with no WEP password), and re-launch AirPort Admin Utility (or Re-scan, if it is already launched). The base station password, "public" -- note: lower case -- is needed not to join the wireless network but for the utility to configure the base station.
Alternatively, it should be possible to configure the base station via Ethernet. Just re-launch AirPort Admin Utility. I believe that the computer's manual IP address setting of 192.42.249.15 should still work so long as the Graphite is not obtaining a WAN IP address from another source (i.e., so long as it is disconnected from the Internet and any other routers), but you could instead change the computer's Ethernet TCP/IP setting to "Using DHCP" before re-launching the utility.

  • HT4262 I WAS TRYING TO SET UP AIRPORT EXSPRESS 802.11 AND IT KEEPS TELLING ME THAT IT CANNOT ATHENTICATE THE BASE STATION

i was trying to set up a brand new airport express and it keeps telling me that it cannot authenticate the base station.
so what do i do ?

    Hello curtcain,
Congratulations on your new AirPort Express!  It sounds like you are trying to extend your wireless network with your new AirPort Express, but you continue to get the error that your base station cannot be authenticated.
I recommend following the steps in the article below for the issue you described:

  • PLEASE HELP: Cannot connect to Base Station

I just bought a new Airport Extreme. I hooked it up to my internet, got it connected to my computer, did all the set up, and it still wouldn't go online. So I though, "Maybe I entered some info wrong or something like that." So I read the manual and did a hard reset along with re-installing the software...
_and now when I open "Airport Utility" it wont even pick up the base station!_ I had it earlier but now it wont even connect. I've tried moving the base away from the wall and into the middle of the room, I've reset it, and hit the "refresh" button a million times.
    Can anyone help me?

Connect the computer running AirPort Utility to the AirPort Extreme Base Station by Ethernet cable.
If AirPort Utility still cannot detect the base station, then go through the reset routines again.

  • Cannot connect to Base Station using Airport Utility

I purchased the AEBS over a month ago and as soon as I connected it to the modem, I was online. I followed the directions to setup a network and connected a printer. Everything worked smoothly, however, sometime shortly therafter, the printer communication stopped working and I could not check the settings of the base station using the airport utility. The airport utility could not see the Base Station whatsoever. The internet worked though. I had to do a hard reset on the AEBS and start from scratch. Everything worked again, but only for a short period of time. The airport utility would not see the BS again. So, what do I do to fix the problem.

Well, during setup, it asks to connect an ethernet cable from the PC to the LAN <--> port on the AE. So, that's part of the standard setup and I believe is how the PC communicates to the AE. The only wireless device I use on the network is my Droid phone. I plan on connecting another computer whenever I get a new one. I'll look again to make sure that I did it right when I get home tonight.

  • Extreme base station worked, but no internet,... now locked out.

    Situation:
Cable modem connected to Extreme base station. Powerbook G4 with 10.3.9 and iMac with 10.3.9 connected by airport to base station. This has been working for more then a year. This morning I had no internet connection on the G4 or the iMac.
    Actions taken:
    - resarted base station -> no result
    - restarted modem -> no result
    - checked connection to Base station -> good wireless connection; I could ping the base station, but nothing beyond
    - connected Powerbook directly to modem by cable -> internet works
    - checked settings base station -> base station seemed to obtain a normal IP address trough the modem
    - hard reset of base station -> no result
    - upgraded firmware to 5.7 -> got message "An error occurred while reading the configuration." when using the airport utility
    - tried using password 'public' -> same message
    - connected by cable to base station -> same message
So things certainly didn't improve since this morning. What else can I try?
    regards, Wim
Powerbook G4, iMac Lime   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thank you Will,
Today I upgraded the airport software on my Powerbook and was able again to connect to the Base station and use the airport utility. But I still could not connect to the internet.
Your post made me rethink my troubleshooting. I did restart the modem, but never disconnected it for more then a few seconds. I just tried it again, left it unconnected for over a minute and now it works again.
So thank you very much, your reply was very helpfull.
    Regards,
    Wim

  • Airport Utility cannot find AX base station

I can see that this is unfortunately a widespread problem, but I wonder if anyone has found a solution. I am running a wireless network with Airport Extreme and iMac (and several Windows laptops). Most of the time it's fine, but twice have I encountered that after shutting off modem and AX that the airport utility cannot find base station even though it is sitting right next to iMac. Also, all lights are solid green, both on modem and AX. I can find loads of other wireless networks, just not my own. No combination of resetting, restarting or reconnecting seems to do the trick and it get's very frustrating! If anyone has a solution, let me know.
    Thanks!

Have youi tried maybe running an Ethernet cable from the AX to the Base Station to establish the connection and then removing it (or reconfiguring the wireless network) ?

  • Cannot get Air base to work- was even turned away by Apple tech support.

I just recently purchased a used Airport Base Station-
I am trying to set up a wireless network at home with my new iMac G5 and a PC running XP --
My problems are: I can't get the PC to hook up and the admin Utility on the iMac wont see it- and keeps asking for a password - I have tried to reset the base station and get the admin Utility to allow me to make the changes but I keep getting vague error messages. So I can't change anything- Even during the whopping 5 minutes that are given to achieve anything when the station goes into reset mode--
When in Admin It wont recognize the ability to change anything--
Am I missing something? Should I attempt to upgrade the firmware? It says that it is in version 3. something It gets cut off no matter what...
    thanks for your help!!

Had to purchase new wireless modem--
Bought a belkin for $30!! Can't beat that!!

  • 2 out of 3 Mac computers cannot find Extreme base station

I have a new airport extreme. I'm using it In bridge mode as it's connected to existing wireless network. I want to use it to extend the very limited range of our wireless network.
We have 3 Apple computers, a new imac, a previouis generation imac and a macbookpro.
I set up the airport extreme configuration to bridge mode using the macbook pro.
However the other 2 computers cannot even find the extreme base station even if sat alongside it...
Do I need to change any settings on the other two computers to allow them to find the extreme?
    Thanks

Stevanvf, Welcome to the discussion area!
Configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to connect to your ISP via PPPoE.
Configure the AEBS to share a single IP address.
Configure all of your computers so that PPPoE is disabled and instead use DHCP to get an IP address from the AEBS.

  • Problems creating a Network -- Base Station works fine with Win XP and 7

I just bought the Airport Express and am using it now as a base station and can connect from both my XP and Win 7 based PCs -- can access the internet from anywhere in my home -- wonder of wonders.
I tried setting up a Network but had to go back to the factory settings each time. I basically can leave it at that (no printing from wireless) but that is not a big issue.
What else will I miss by not being able to create a network?
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Cannot configure AirPort Base Station (Graphite).

    Greetings,
let me describe my problem - I can connect to my Base station's network without problem. But when I run AirPort Admin Utility, it never even see the station. Airport setup assistant sees it, but what ever you did with this appl, it only ends with some error message - couldn't connect etc.
In total despair I went to my old iMac where is 10.4.10. I haven't run software update there for some time. iMac can both connect to network and configure the station with Airport admin utility...
Im out of ideas... But I need to be able to configure station from my iBook as well.
    Thanks for any ideas.

I might have wrote the type of station wrong... Anyway, for all cases, here is the link where you can see picture of my station model, which should clear all doubts.

  • Cannot make GRUB2 use (perfectly-working) max resolution

My arch installation is still in its infancy console-only (no X installed) and it is perfectly working @ 1920x1200 native resolution on a Dell Inspiron 9400 E1705 with ATI Radeon X1400 @ 1920x1200 (aka WUXGA mode) with the xf86-video-ati driver installed and the corresponding RADEON module on (/etc/mkinitcpio.conf) for early KMS start.
    cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/virtual_size ... reports 1920x1200
However, when I boot and enter GRUB2 console and run VBEvideo to show all supported resolutions it shows preferred-resolution=1920x1200 but current-resolution=1600x1200 and there's no entry for the native 1920x1200 resolution -the closest one is 1920x1440 which does not fit my laptop screen; which perfectly explains why GRUB2 is using what is currently using.
Obviously, switching the associated GRUB_GFXMODE entry from =auto (default) to =1920x1200 in (/etc/default/grub) and then running grub-mkconfig --output /boot/grub/grub.cfg does not make any changes: it always ends in 1600x1200 for the boot screen.
GRUB2 works fine. Arch works fine too. Only problem I am trying to fix is some screen flash when GRUB2 turns control to linux and thus is how I discovered the GRIB2 entry for video.
Any clues why GRUB2 is not listing/supporting a video mode that is obviously supported on this particular laptop and/or linux installation ?

Although I still can't find conclusive evidence on this matter what you tell me seems to be right: for what I learned so far GRUB2 loads some very-basic VESA driver and maybe this is the key issue here for non-standard resolutions -mine @ 1920x1200 (widescreen) sure it is not.
    Anyway thanks for your help

    steps i've taken...
bought a replacement airport antenna for the back of the G5 Tower
placed the AE directly beside my G5 and scanned for it (nothing)
    taken wireless security off
waited on hold for an incredibly long time for tech support
still the G5 can't find the network...
