I cannot open any Word or Excel attachments to my email. How can this be fixed?

I can open an attachment that uses Adobe. When I try to open a Word or Excel attachment, a box pops up asking, "What should Firefox do with this file?" It then says, open with . . . browse, and I have to browse all the internet and program files to open the file. If I can find a program to open the attachment, then it is scrambled. How can I have Word or Excel, or any other Windows program automatically open an attachment like I have been doing for years? What has changed to prevent me from doing this? How can it be fixed? Also, can I bypass the documents window? What is the purpose for it and why does it store attached documents . . . only to clear later?

Try deleting cookies and cache:
1. Tools| Clear recent history
2. Time range to clear: Everything
3. If it isn't already selected, select '''Cookies''' and '''Cache'''

Check cookie exceptions
1. Tools | Options | Privacy Panel

I do the download for the new version, it goes smooth, and then when I try to open it up, it pops up in my Task Manager for a moment and then disappears. No error messages, just disappears.

(a) launch perfectly fine?
(b) fail to launch with an error message? (if so, what does it say?)

Word can't open or does it open but you can't open documentts?
If you have Office does Excell or Power Point open? If they do you can perhaps check for updates with either of them: Help > Check for Updates. You can also try to reinstall Office with your installation disks. Don't delete Office, just try to install it again.

I'm in the same boat: new to OS X and Mac, and in the middle of a book. I switched because I heard about the the ease of using Mac, but so far, for me, it's been a nightmare. I bought 2011 Office Mac and hate everything about it, the most recent being the inability to open or cut or paste any of my original word files. I understand that this could have easily been done with earlier versions, but not Mountain Lion (which I learned is what OSX is.) Since I work with language, I am amazed at the assumptions of the Apple community. It helps to use common language and explain even the basics.
So all the helpful hints to use the latest version of Office Mac are to no avail. Now what?

One thing you might want to do is restart the computer while holding down the Option key then select the Restore Volume and run Disk Utility and repair the Disk Permissions on the HD. Run DP at least 2x.

I should further say the files I sent are .xlsx and .docx files. They look fine my end and I send such files all the time without problems.
However, I did try to cheat by going in via the Safari onto my 'live' online email account and the Safari automatically transfers them to winmail.dat files with the same result.
Ahh - have just been on using my PC this time and you are right, it seems that the service provider does the transfer and then when my outlook opens the file (on the PC), it must reconvert to .xlsx etc again.
Very strange.

You don't tell us what version of Office for Mac you presently have, but I'm guessing it might be Office for Mac 2004. If so, in addition to the suggestion to download OpenOffice you can purchase the most recent version of Office for Mac 2011 directly from MS <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/buy>. You can also purchase Pages productivity suite from the Mac App Store <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12>.

Ack! We don't need that much.
What you posted looks like the iTunes Library.xml file I will let you read about how iTunes works but not only is the .xml not your main library it is just the listing of tracks in your library and where the music files should be located. Your music is actually in media files (by the way, it is pointless to zip those as they are already compressed). Anyway, read these and you will see that your true library file (iTunes Library.itl) is only a small, but still important, part of a complete library.

As you can see, a library has several components, so "getting it back" depends upon what is missing, what it was you actually backed up in the end, if any of this music was purchased from the iTunes Store, etc.

In the Adobe Premiere Elements AutoSave Folder were:
My new video project-1.prel (first and the oldest)
My new video project-2.prel
My new video project-3.prel
My new video project-4.prel
My new video project-5.prel (last and the newest)
I am OK with the first 5 with the maximum project versions = 5, but.....
Since I have set for only 5 versions, where do the subsequent versions go every 1 minute since you continue to
see only the above file names in the Adobe Premiere Elements AutoSave Folder.
My new video project-1.prel
is now the 6th AutoSave and replaces the original first AutoSave.
My new video project-2 prel
is now the 7th AutoSave and replaces the original second Auto Save.
Since I did 7 AutoSaves, this is the last and the newest.
My new video project-3.prel is still the original third AutoSave.
My new video project-4.prel is still the original fourth AutoSave.
My new video project-5.prel is still the original fifth AutoSave.
So, after the generation of the 10 th AutoSave, all the original 5 AutoSave would be gone,
and the My new video project-5.prel would then again become the last and the newest)
As for the question about

Yes, but review the Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks for the locations of the scratch disc. If same as
project, then those scratch disc will end up in the folder with the AutoSave which has become your project.prel.
A battery failure was at the core of this situation. So you should be OK moving forward.

Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

We can't lay all the blame (or much of it) at Apple's feet. Over a year before they trotted out Lion they told all the developers and the rest of the Mac community that they would no longer drag Rosetta into the future.   Rosetta translated programs from the PowerPC to the Intel mode. There are other programs, most notably Quicken 2007, that were affected also.
MS Office 2008 and 2011 were already out so I don' think Microsoft felt they had to fix something in 2004. I think many people understood that MS Office 2004 would not work in Lion and there were tutorials out there about how to examine the applications you had to see if they would work with Lion. There is even a web site dedicated to showing what applications had been tested to work with Lion.
However, there are always some who do not get the word (no pun intended) and they probably were not that into computers enough to be looking at this news all the time.
I am glad MS Office 2011 is working for you.
