I cannot open Desktop

I have had some problems after a hard disk crash, especially with iphoto. Now, I flet quite happy that iphoto worked again and that my libraries were in place, when I doscovered that I cannot save anything to the desktop. There is no program allocated to open this document, is the message I get. It is not a document - how do I get this right again?

  • Cannot open desktop and applications icons

Hi I would appreciate your help. I have had this computer for a year and lately I cannot open desk top icons and icons in applications folder. Someone suggested
holding the control key and then a menu comes on and ask to open and it works. But
there must be a better way. I am a writer and a translator so I need this option to work. I really appreciate your help. Many thanks

Hello Pilatesteacher and welcome to the forums!
If you really are still on 10.4.8 and have never updated your system, perhaps you have also not realised the importance of a little maintenance from time to time, the most important, and easy, of which is:
Repairing permissions, which should also always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Cannot open Desktop Software after intsallation

    Hi,
I've downloaded the latest desktop software for pc users, gone through the installation process and the installation finishes etc.
When I double-click on icon, I get error box with the following wording in it:
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
    Process ID=0x670 (1648), Thread ID=0x524 (1316).
Click OK to terminate the application
Click CANCEL to debug the application
When I click CANCEL I get the following:
No registered JIT debugger was specified.
So I then opened the zip download and did a "repair" and that didn't fix this problem, the same errors come up.
    Can you please help?
This is with the latest version of software, downloaded today!

I'm running on Windows XP - I've tried unzipping the download with 7-Zip and I get the same errors!
I've uninstalled, downloaded the file over and over and I really don't seem to be getting anywhere....
    Any help would be lovely!

  • Cannot open desktop view of browser

I can view my Yahoo homepage in desktop version on one of my iPhones and my iPad, but not in my other iPhone.  Both phones are identical iPhone 4.
Yahoo will not support the use of desktop view on any mobile device.
    Anyone have a suggestion?
    Jim

I solved this.  I was able to engage the desktop view by changing the screen orientation from vertical to horizontal.

  • HT3386 Where is the icon for pages?  How can I open desktop labels program

Apps says Pages is installed.  I cannot locate it on my iMac.  Cannot open desktop labels either.  Have been charged for both.

If you bought Desktop Labels from the Mac App Store, it should be in your Applications folder.
You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents. There is no special importing needed. There are several methods you can use, common to most Mac applications. Use the Open dialog, Control- or right-click & choose the desired application from Open With in the contextual menu or drag the icon of the file onto the desired application icon in the Finder or the Dock. If you want to (semi-) permanently change the application to open the files, you can do it in Get Info. I'm not sure how successful this would be with AppleWorks documents, though, since OS X does not differentiate between the various AppleWorks document types & there are three different applications you would use.
Preview, that comes with the Mac OS will open PDFs.

First, I would recommend repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility.
If that doesn't fix the problem, there's a very dangerous command you can execute in the Terminal.  This is very hazardous, because a simple typo can result in very drastic consequences.  I have seen people erase their entire hard drive by putting a space in the wrong place!  So, please follow the directions I'm going to give you very carefully!
Open the Terminal, which is found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.  In the Terminal, enter the following:
    sudo rm -f
Make sure to put a space after the "-f"!  Then, drag the troublesome file from the Finder and drop it on the Terminal window.  That should insert the path to the file in the command.  Then go back to the Terminal and press return.  You will be asked for your password, and when you type it, nothing will be shown as a security measure.  Press return again after entering your password.  The file should be deleted.

From the names I'd guess they are temporary files. If excel is running, quit and try again. If they still won't move or delete reboot. If they still won't move or delete...kill a chicken at midnight under an oak tree?

So, for days now, I cannot open my apps in CC.  When I click on the icon (Br, Lr, Ps) in the desktop CC, nothing happens.

    Hi Gary,
I have seen this issue occur with users who have this registry setting missing or have improper permissions.
When you double click the attachment to launch the pdf it is saved and opened from the temporary folder unless saved specifically to a location.
If you dont have the below mentioned registry key or improper permissions then attachments fail to open.
Please  heck if the following reg key exists:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
    or
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
    Value Name: OutlookSecureTempFolder
If the value exists, and if the value contains a valid path, Outlook 2010 uses that location for its temporary files.
If the registry value does not exist, or if the value points to an invalid location, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007, or Outlook 2003 creates a new subdirectory under the Temporary Internet Files directory and then puts the temporary file in the new subdirectory. The name of the new subdirectory is unknown and is randomly generated, depending on your version of Outlook.
    Please check the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security
Note the location for: OutlookSecureTempFolder key
Check if the same folder exists in the following location and if not create a corresponding folder in the location on C:\Users\<User account name>\Appdata\Local\Software\Microsoft\Windows\......

I have joined adobe cloud free trial, and adobe application maager is installed on my desktop, but I cannot open anything using the application manager.  Any suggestions?

You will want to open the applications from either your Start menu or Applications folder depending on which operating system you are utilizing.

  • Have photoshop cs5 installed on desktop..got new Canon rebel T5i camera...cannot open RAW images...updated and installed plug-in...still now working.  Need help, please.

I have photoshop cs5 installed on desktop...got new Canon rebel T5i camera...cannot open RAW images...updated and installed plug-in...still not working...help please.

In any event, that camera was first supported by ACR version 7.4 which needs at least CS6 to run.  Naturally, all later versions support it too.
Your choice is either to upgrade your Photoshop, or to look for, download, install, launch and run the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 on each folder containing your raw Canon files to convert them first to raw DNGs that you can open in CS5.
In no case does an Adobe application belong "on your desktop".  The default install location should always be respected and left alone.

  • I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them.  This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto.  I cannot open iPhoto now.  Can someone help please?

I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them.  This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto.  I cannot open iPhoto now.  Can someone help please?

What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11.

  • Numerous websites linked to desktop icons won't open with Firefox as my default browser, but will when I subsequently designate Internet Explorer as the default browser. However, when I select IE, I cannot open Firefox. How do I fix this? CharlieA

When I designate Firefox as my default browser, I cannot open any destop link to any website, except Mozilla. When I change that designation to Internet Explorer, I can open all destop linked websites, except for Firefox. What do I do?

Sometimes Windows gives you weird error messages when you click a link in another program or double-click a desktop shortcut. These messages usually occur only when Firefox was closed and has to be launched before the link can be loaded. Is that what you're getting? This occurs when Firefox's registry settings get crossed up, as described in this article: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Windows_error_opening_Internet_shortcut_or_local_HTML_file_-_Firefox Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox - MozillaZine Knowledge Base].
If that isn't it, what happens exactly?
