I cannot open iTunes on my iMac
After this morning (May 17, 2013) update of my iMac, I get this error message "You cannot open iTunes as it is not supported on this type of Mac."
What can I do?
This is my iMac: 27inch, Nov 2011, Intel Core processor, Mac OS X 10.6.8
This is the iTunes updated version that causes the error message: 11.0.3

Have you tried to reinstall iTunes again from the Apple website? > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1614 -
OS 10.6.8 cannot open iTunes
Cannot open iTunes. Running newly installed OS 10.6.8. Just had to upgrade OS in order to upgrade iTunes for my new phone. itunes was working yesterday and not today
Thanks again. The option thing got me further than I've gotten thus far but when I went to choose a library I got that same message.
I do have options. I have 2 iMacs. I can still access my music through 'sharing' and download it onto my newer iMac. Trouble is it doesn't have a CD port and I like to burn. From what I've read about their new Mac portable CD/DVD drive, it's shaky at best. Incidentally, do you know of any drives that work well with Macs and cost less than $89.00?
I've figured out I can download a previous library from my old Mac then upload it from the new one which should put me back in business, but what do I do with the corrupt one that's there now, just trash it? Also, when I do the option key my other choice is Create A New Library. Should I do that and put the good previous library into it?
Thanks a million, I really appreciate your time. I'm an old fogey and computers often mystify me, especially when they lock me out of things for no apparent reason. -
ITunes update accepted and updated but still have 12.01 and cannot open iTunes!
On a MacMini 2010 era with Maverick 10.9.5 OS.
Cannot open iTunes after "updating" to 12.1
Just received an update notice for iTunes to new version 12.1, accepted the update and as required restarted computer.
Tried to open iTunes - does not open.
Checking the app info, the iTunes on my computer is still 12.0.1 and I'm unable to open iTunes app in any way.
Checking the Apple Updates log online it is showing the apps with this update (iTunes 12.1, Safari 7.5.3, Security update 2015-001) were logged as updated twice on the same date 2/12/15 in the updates record.
The current version of Safari on my computer is NOT 7.5.3 but is still 7.1.2. But at least Safari opens and works.
2 days ago updated my Mac Air without any problems.
Help / advice appreciatedFollowing another's suggestion I went to Apple online and downloaded iTunes 12.1 dmg package and installed.
Solved the iTunes issue, iTunes now opens and operates.
Correction: Safari update is 7.1.3 not 7.5.3. However...
As far as Safari update and Security update - who knows! Safari is not an download option with Apple as far as I can tell. -

Still unable to download itunes to my pc. Tried with IE, Mozilla and Google Chrome. Keep getting an error message :"Windows cannot open itunes.exe the file is corrupt contact support."previous itunes files were wipped out by "disk cleaner." Any help??
Please!
Thanks! If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem. -

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it
I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes. -
I get the message 'itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close' when trying to open itunes 11.1.1.11. I had to uninstall itunes so that I could load this version as the update to version 11 kept failing. The PC says 11.1.1.11 is correctly loaded, but I now cannot open itunes. Any advice on how to get itunes working again?
Hello there, ytnoj.
Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes can be a tricky endeavor and must be done in a very specific way. The following Knowledge Base article provides the step-by-step of the process:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows XP

I have removed all spyware, anti virus software and removed all iTunes programs - as suggested by Apple. I still cannot open iTunes on my PC because of the message "you do not have permission to open this file, folder"
I have changed and checked all permissions to allow this but still get the same message.
iTunes is located on my C drive and I now do not have the neccesary permissions to open it.Hey Chris-
It has been some time since you posted this message and I see you haven't gotten any replies, but I have the same issue and I was wondering if you figured out how to resolve it. Hopefully you were able to figure it out. -
I have just opened ITunes on my Mac and the following error occurred "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.". When I setup my Mac I created a shared user area to contain my ITunes library so that I could share it with another user logged onto my Mac. However the error above gives me the impression that the library file is locked... I've checked and it does not seem to be locked under the "get info" fie information. Has anyone come across this before and found a solution?
You also need to make sure you have both read and write permission for the file, or for the whole iTunes folder for that matter. That's also done in Get Info for the file or folder concerned.
Read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914 -
I cannot open iTunes. I get a message that says "The file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?"
I downloaded it and it and I continue to get the same message.
How do I fix this? Thanks, DeeUpgrade iTunes to the latest version. It should be 10.5.3.
